Anthropology and Linguistics (AXL) has a long and strong record of teaching and research in Social-

Cultural Anthropology, focusing largely but not exclusively on Southern Africa, with growing links across the Global South. As part of AXL, Anthropology at UCT offers exciting possibilities for new interdisciplinary relationships, including but not only with colleagues in the School. Our present expertise is in:

 Anthropology of Development and Infrastructure

 Anthropology of Gender and Sexuality

 Anthropology of Knowledge (including environment, science and technology)

 Anthropology of Archives, memory and narrative

 Anthropological Debates about Belonging (including ethnicity, identity and diaspora)

 Anthropology of Youth and Children

 Medical Anthropology

 Visual and Media Anthropology

Postgraduate programmes include the Honours in Social Anthropology; coursework based Masters programmes in Social and in Practical Anthropology; a research-based Masters and a research-based

PhD programme, leading respectively to a dissertation and a thesis.

Applicants for the Senior Lectureship should have a PhD in Social and/or Cultural Anthropology and have a significant and growing publication record. Applicants for the Lectureship should have, or will have completed by the time of appointment, a PhD in Social and/or Cultural Anthropology and have at least a small and growing publication record. The appointee should be willing, if needed, to take courses at UCT in tertiary level teaching methods so as to develop their teaching skills.

Applicants should have the ability to teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Experience in supervising graduate students would be advantageous, and essential for those applying for the Senior

Lectureship. Expertise in contemporary fields of Social and/or Cultural Anthropology is required. We will give preference to candidates with demonstrated research competence and an interest and ability to link their teaching and research to the emerging theoretical framework of the AXL School. In light of this imperative, the Anthropology Section is keen to expand its range of teaching and research into new areas of contemporary anthropology.

The annual cost of employment, including benefits is:

Senior Lecturer: R 595 903

Lecturer: R 484 656

Appointment will take place at the appropriate level in alignment with the Faculty’s criteria for promotion.
