Section 4.25, Page 1 UTHSCSA School of Nursing Faculty Handbook Chapter 4: Faculty Information Section 4.25 Approving non UTHSCSA Graduate Students as Teaching Assistants for Clinical Courses Effective: May 2010 Revised/Reviewed: Responsibility: Associate Dean for Undergraduate Nursing Program Page/s 1 POLICY: APPROVING NON UTHSCSA GRADUATE STUDENTS AS TEACHING ASSISTANTS FOR CLINICAL COURSES SON values the faculty role and providing experienced support for individuals seeking to learn the faculty role. 1. UTHSCSA Son graduate students will be given priority when making student placements 2. SON will accept UTHSC graduate student taking Roles of the Teacher course as preceptees in a Teaching Assistant position with a clinical faculty preceptor. 3. SON will accept graduate nursing student from other schools of nursing as clinical preceptees if they are enrolled in a teaching course and if UTHSCSA clinical faculty are willing to accept the student and the clinical course being requested is suitable to meet the graduate students learning objectives. PROCESS UTHSCSA SON Students 1. Students in roles of teacher course identify potential courses with course instructor. 2. Course instructor request preceptors from Clinical Liaison. 3. Liaison contacts UTHSCSA faculty requesting placement. 4. If faculty is willing to take student, Clinical Liaison notifies appropriate clinical agency. 5. Student and faculty work together regarding role. NON UTHSCSA Student 1. Student or faculty from other school makes initial contract with SON by way of Assoc. Dean for Undergraduate Programs, 2. Associate Dean and Clinical Liaison will assess appropriate placement. 3. Associate Dean will contact appropriate Department Chair to seek approval for approval of designation of faculty. 4. Clinical Liaison will work with student’s parent institution to get MOA for student to be at UTHSCSA and our partnering clinical agencies. a. MOA must show that student has liability coverage up to date immunizations and clear criminal background. b. Copy of MOA is kept in Clinical Liaison files, second copy is sent to Dept. Administrator. 5. Once MOA is signed, student will work with department administrator to complete Person of Interest (POI) requirements thus allowing student to be on campus and at clinical agencies. a. Dept. Administrator finds POI form under Master Forms inside UTHSCSA. b. Student completes form including SSN and DOB and returns to Dept. Administrator. c. Dept. Administrator enters data into People Soft including begins and end dates and students personal identifying information. d. Once approved, student is able to get parking permit and badge from University Police. e. POI information kept on file in Dept. and with Clinical Liaison.
