Content

Following coffee on arrival there will be detailed tours of the Priory site, with some emphasis on the monastic remains both above and below ground, including the surviving architectural features. In the afternoon Judy Brent will outline the formation and scope of the Society's Lambert, Sharpe, Saunders and Quartermain collections and Dr David Parsons will discuss the value of pictorial evidence for historians of church architecture in Sussex. Slides will be shown and some original topographical drawings will be on display. Copies of other historic illustrations will also be available.

The Sharpe Collection of drawings and watercolours of Sussex churches from around

1800 is a valuable resource curated by the Society at Michelham. This occasion offers a rare opportunity to see many of the illustrations together and at first hand. The selection is based on churches visited by the Friends over the last decade.

The Illustration on this Leaflet is an example of the kind of material to be discussed. It was drawn by S H Grimm and shows the remains of Michelham Priory as he saw them in 1784. This drawing is not part of the Sussex Archaeological Society’s collections.
