Thurso Heritage Society Conserve ~ Interpret~ Educate We Need Your Help! Thurso Heritage Society is a registered charity (SC015758). The Society was formed in order to preserve and promote the character, history and traditions of the county of Caithness in general and the town of Thurso in particular. Thurso Heritage Society needs your help as it will be applying for grant aid to raise funds to restore and interpret Old St. Peter’s Church. As part of its fundraising campaign the Society needs to gather letters of support from the local community and visitors to the area so please complete and return the letter of support. Old St. Peter’s Church, although enlarged and extensively rebuilt in the first half of the 17 th century, incorporates considerable remains of what may have been an early 12th century Head Kirk that was linked to Orkney. The Church’s buttresses, apse and tower are thought to be the oldest structures in Caithness. The Church has an impressive stonework tracery window, opening. It is a Scheduled Monument of national importance. The tower once acted as the town’s prison, whilst the graveyard dates back to Viking times. If you would like to become a member of Thurso Heritage Society and/or make a donation to help to restore Old St. Peter’s Church please contact Mrs Elma Mowat, Honorary Treasurer, 27 Durness Street Thurso, KW14 8BD. ________________________________________________________________________________ TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: I am writing to lend my support to Thurso Heritage Society’s efforts to secure grant aid to restore and interpret Old St. Peter’s Church, Thurso.
