GWRRA So You Want to Become a Seminar Presenter GOLD WING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATION RIDER EDUCATION PROGRAM So You Want to Become A Rider Ed Seminar Presenter - Presentation Plan Title: So You Want to Become A Rider Ed Seminar Presenter Objective: At the completion of this seminar you will be better prepared to become a GWRRA Seminar Presenter, by understanding the application process, initial training, re-certification requirements, and recognizing how the new Seminar Presenter can achieve the highest form of payback from their investment from the GWRRA membership – recognition of saving a life. Resources Needed: Resources required are dependent upon the method chosen to conduct the seminar. The seminar can be conducted in one of two ways: 1. Slide Presentation with instructor commentary 2. Lecture/Overhead Presentation Method 1 will require a slide projector, screen, a copy of appropriate slides, and a “script” or notes of the informational points associated with each slide shown during the presentation. A flip chart or white board is also encouraged to record and emphasize points brought up by the audience. Method 2 will require an overhead projector and screen, or can be presented using a laptop computer linked to a data display unit such as a Proxima. Overheads slides will be formatted in Microsoft PowerPoint and the instructor should have instructor notes attached to each slide. The slides used during the course of this presentation should be copied as handouts for the participants. Introduction: {Tell them what you are going to tell them.} To introduce the seminar, regardless of the method to be used, the following points should be made: Introduce yourself Introduce your background and position (“I have been in GWRRA for (X) years and am the Chapter/District/Region Educator or a Rider Education Certified Seminar Presenter”. The purpose of the Seminar The Seminar will cover the following topics associated with how to become a GWRRA Seminar Presenter: 1 Version 6.08 June 2008 GWRRA Instructor Presentation Plan GWRRA So You Want to Become a Seminar Presenter o Seminar Presenter Development Program (SPDP) The Seminar Presenter Development Program is a cooperative effort between GWRRA Leadership Training and Rider Education. 1 day course to prepare prospective Seminar Presenters to provide consistent high quality training to the GWRRA membership. The program is designed to teach Candidates to be Rider Education Seminar Presenters. This program only certifies them to teach Rider Education Seminars. To teach Leadership Training Seminars will require the Candidate to take additional training from Leadership Training. Completion of the program requires: Satisfactory evaluations in the classroom Two “field” Seminar Presentations. The classroom portion of the program is presented to the Candidates by a Leadership Training Senior Master Trainer and a Region/District Educator. Each Instructor is responsible for a portion of the presentation. The “field” evaluations are the responsibility of Rider Education. The classroom responsibilities are as follows: o Leadership Training Senior Master Trainer: Unit 1: Program Goals and Overview Unit 2: Training In GWRRA Unit 3: Instructor's Tool Box Exercise 1 Exercise 2 (Part 1, 2, 3) o Region/District Educator: Unit 4: Curriculum, Organization and Presentation Exercise 3 The Program uses three primary learning tools: o SPDP Study Guide questions o PowerPoint Instructional Presentation o Practical Exercises Classroom evaluations are performed by both Instructors and they must concur on the performance of the Candidate for them to continue on to the “field” Seminar Presentations. 2 Version 6.08 June 2008 GWRRA Instructor Presentation Plan GWRRA So You Want to Become a Seminar Presenter Learning Tools o SPDP Study Guide Questions, found at the back of the Candidates Workbook, needs to be completed by the Candidate prior to attending the class. o This is a proven “Adult Learning” process that will aid in the Candidates preparation for class. o These questions focus on the key points of the material and completion will ensure that the Candidate has study the material prior to the class. o Completion of the Study Guide Questions is a non-graded requirement of the class. o The questions are used and reviewed in the PowerPoint Instructional Presentation. o The PowerPoint Instructional Presentation is presented by both Instructors. o Broken into four units, the presentation covers a wide range of topics designed to train the Candidates how to be a successful Seminar Presenter. o Program Objectives: Provide an International source of qualified Seminar Presenters. Certification “Waivers” not generally available Demonstrate complete knowledge of the program content and well developed skill in presenting the program to others. Certification Officials are District Educators, Region Educators, or the Director- Rider Education. Seminar Presenter Development Program (SPDP) must be completed within 6 months of appointment. o To ensure knowledgeable Presenters and quality Seminars. o Rider Education Responsibility Completion of the Seminar Presenter Development Program. Updates to Seminar Programs. A comprehensive set of guidelines for use in implementing and managing effective Rider Education Training. A well rounded and flexible Rider Education Seminar curriculum. A methodology for routine evaluation of the program, its benefits and effectiveness. o The Rider Education Seminar Presenter: Tenure: o Appointed by, and report to, the local Region or District Educator. o Not a lifetime appointment, but serve at the pleasure of their certifying official. What must a Presenter do to maintain his/her certification? o Every two years the Presenter is evaluated. o An in-depth review o Submit a Seminar Presenter Renewal Form (N.15) o Position Scope and General Responsibilities: Support and cooperate with volunteer Leadership. Attend Regional and District meetings and other training events as requested. Complete the GWRRA Rider Education Seminar Presenter Development Program and maintain current certification. Present and evaluate training seminars. Be aware of, and respond to, training opportunities, issues, and concerns. Who has leadership training experience or contributes time and ideas? Who are the most dependable staff/members? Who knows how to influence people in a positive way? An application for the Seminar Presenter position. A thorough interview including a discussion of the position and its related expectations. Candidate then forwards the completed application to the appointing official. o Appointment Process: The appointment process is as follows: There is a review of the application and resume. Verification of membership status. Successful completion of the SPDP and field evaluation. Submission of all paperwork to the Region Educator. The appointed Seminar Presenter will receive: Rider Education Certified Presenter card. A letter of appointment. These are conducted by a Certifying Official May be a Chapter Presentation, District or Region sponsored Event Certifier will observe and offer coaching. In rare circumstances, the certifier has the authority to terminate the process - and the responsibility to take over the presentation if necessary. o Rider Education Seminar Review Session within the District Seminar Presenters coordinate their Presentations with the District/Region Educator (DE/RE). There may be opportunities to invite other Chapters/Members DEs should strive to observe the active Seminar Presenters in their District whenever possible. Share Student Feedback with the DE or RE as an alternative to schedule conflicts and large distances preventing observation. Provide suggestions for consideration in future revisions to the responsible Assistant to the Director of GWRRA Rider Education to improve the course. o So, how do I sign up for a SPDP? Contact your District or Region Educator and let them know you are interested. Once enough prospective Seminar Presenters are available, the DE will organize the SPDP. Depending on the finances in the District, you may be asked to pay for a portion of the cost of your Student materials. o Restrictions Who can I present the seminar to? o The class should be substantially made up of GWRRA members – it was developed for them o Others are OK – it may be a good recruiting tool to include prospective Members What can I charge for my services? o Our Seminar Presenters are volunteers. o There is no charge for the presenter’s time o Depending on the finances of the group requesting the seminar, full or partial reimbursement for legitimate expenses may be offered Obligations 8 Version 6.08 June 2008 GWRRA Instructor Presentation Plan GWRRA So You Want to Become a Seminar Presenter o To remain certified, the Seminar Presenter must present a minimum of 2 seminars in the renewal period (2 years) o Rewards Why do Seminar Presenters do what they do? o Why do Seminar Presenters do what they do? The knowledge imparted may save the life of a Member, friend, or loved one. Potential injuries can be reduced. Any gathering of GWRRA Members and friends can be a lot of FUN!
