De Montfort University PhD Scholarship Evolutionary Learning Classifier Systems for Mining Data Streams in Dynamic Environments Centre for Computational Intelligence School of Computer Science and Informatics Faculty of Technology De Montfort University, Leicester COMMENCING OCTOBER 2015 A PhD research scholarship including stipend and tuition fee costs is offered within the Centre for Computational Intelligence in the School of Computer Science and Informatics, De Montfort University (DMU). It is available to UK or EU students who are suitably qualified and have outstanding potential as a researcher. Project outline: The project aims to carry out research on developing Evolutionary Computation (EC) based learning classification systems (i.e., evolutionary learning classification systems) for mining data streams in dynamic environments. The objectives of the project are to: 1) Model typical classification problems for data streams in dynamic environments as dynamic classification problems (DCPs) in cooperation with our industrial partners; 2) Design novel and efficient learning classification systems and ensemble systems based on EC methods (e.g., genetic algorithms, memetic algorithms, and hybrid algorithms) to solve these modelled DCPs in data streams; 3) Develop prototype software of applying evolutionary learning classification systems for solving DCPs in data streams in dynamic environments. This is a timely and important project as only recently researchers have started to investigate applications of EC for mining data streams in dynamic environments. Additionally, DCPs for data streams are pervasive in different fields and addressing them will lead to significant economic, social, and environmental benefits. For a more detailed description of the scholarship and the subject area at DMU please visit http://www.dmu.ac.uk/research/graduate-school/phd-scholarships.aspx or contact Professor Shengxiang Yang on +44 (0)116 2078805 or email syang@dmu.ac.uk. In offering this scholarship the University aims to further develop its proven research strengths in EC and Data Stream Mining. It is an excellent opportunity for a candidate of exceptional promise to contribute to a stimulating, world-class research environment. Applications are invited from UK or EU students with a Master’s degree or good first degree (First, 2:1 or equivalent) in a relevant subject. Doctoral scholarships are available for up to three years full-time study starting October 2015 and provide a bursary of ca. £14,057 pa in addition to University tuition fees. To receive an application pack, please contact Morgan Erdlenbruch via email at Morgan.Erdlenbruch@dmu.ac.uk. Completed applications should be returned together with two supporting references.
