CHAIR’S CORNER
PROFESSOR JOEL PARRISH
Hello. It is hard to believe that the semester
is now half over and we are
approaching the holiday
season. It’s time for students to start thinking
about registration for
spring 2007 courses and
seeing your advisors as
soon as possible. I hope that your courses are
all going well and you are staying on top of all
your coursework. I’m sure that the semester will
be a rewarding experience for you. On an unrelated note, the rain and wind we’ve had for the
past week has hit the leaf-peeping season pretty
hard, but there’s still a chance to catch some
color at this beautiful time of year. It is also time
to begin to reflect upon the upcoming end of the
year, and the coming of a new year. Let me
close with some words that may help in this reflective time of the season.
Now is the time for turning. The leaves are
beginning to turn from green to red to orange.
The birds are beginning to turn and are heading
once more toward the south. The animals are
beginning to turn to storing their food for the
winter.
Turning comes instinctively to leaves, birds,
and animals. But for us, turning does not come
so easily. It takes an act of will for us to make a
turn. It means breaking with old habits. It
means admitting that we have been wrong; and
this is never easy. It means losing face; it means
starting all over again; and this is always painful.
It means saying: I am sorry. It means recognizing that we have the ability to change.
These things are terribly hard to do. But
unless we turn, we will be trapped forever in
yesterday’s ways. So, at this turning time of the
year, for all of us, let us turn—from callousness
to sensitivity, from hostility to love, from pettiness to purpose, from envy to contentment, from
carelessness to discipline, from fear to faith.
Turn us around and turn us toward each
other, for in isolation there is no life. A happy
Thanksgiving and fall season to all of you.
SPRING 2007 EARLY
REGISTRATION PERIOD
The early registration period for the Spring
2007 semester begins Monday, November 13,
2006. The week of registration is November 13
– November 20, 2006. Please be aware this is
the start of spring 2007 registration. You will be
able to register for spring 2007 courses until
January 16, 2007. After January 16, 2007, a
late registration fee will apply.
Students – you are encouraged to meet with
your advisor at least one week prior to the
scheduled time of your registration. There are
two things to remember: (1) your advisor has
specific office hours, and (2) your advisor is the
only one who can sign your proposed spring
2007 course registration sheet. Please refer to
pages 8-11 for the advisee/advisor listing and to
page 6 for faculty office hours. In addition, student classification has always been determined
by completed semester hour credits. There has
been a slight change, but classification is applicable to all classes-2007-2010. Please note:

Former advisees of Dr. Sandra CoyneWesterkamp have each been reassigned a
new advisor.

Professor Thomas Shea’s advisees may be
advised by any full-time faculty member.

Bay Path College
Springfield College (SC), in cooperation with
seven of the area’s finest public and private
institutions, has established a cooperative association that has been specifically designed to
enhance the educational experience through the
use of cooperative programs and services, including cross[-]registration, student-faculty intercollege library privileges, joint student activities,
academic cooperation, and student activity calendars.
Known as the Cooperating Colleges of
Greater Springfield (CCGS), the association was
formed in 1970 by the presidents of each of the
charter institutions. The other members are
American International College, Bay Path College, Elms College, Holyoke Community College, Springfield Technical Community College,
Western New England College, and Westfield
State College.
Springfield College undergraduate students
may, with approval, enroll for cooperating college credit at any of the CCGS institutions in
courses not offered in the curricula of Springfield
College. Cooperating college credit is not available for internships and graduate courses. Students are limited to two courses or 6-8 credits
per semester.
In Fall or Spring semesters: Students must
be registered as full-time (combination of
Springfield College and cooperating college
courses must total at least 12 credit hours) and
complete CCGS cross-registration paperwork
prior to taking the course. Tuition costs for
courses taken for cooperating college credit are
paid by student’s home college. Grades for completed coursework are submitted to the

WHERE ARE WE LOCATED?
The Department of
Management
and
Economics is located
in Locklin Hall, which
is on the corner of Wilbraham Avenue and
Alden Street just past
the traffic light. You
will see park benches in front of the building.
We are on the second floor of Locklin Hall.
If you take the stairs, go up one level. At the
top of the stairs take a right and three steps
later, there is an alcove to your left, which is the
entrance hallway to the department (rooms 200210). You may also take an immediate left
when you exit the elevator on the second floor.

USELESS TRIVIA 101
NOVEMBER 2006
By Professor Thomas Shea
Once
again,
Leslie
LaBranche is our winner.
Time after time, she comes
up with all the right answers. I really appreciate
her loyalty to the column
(moreover, her additions to
my storehouse of knowledge with her addenda to the correct answers.
It is not necessary to be a trivia whiz or to get
all the questions right. This is really only for fun.
Since it is, and since you could probably find the
answers on the Internet in about 12 seconds, I
urge you to try to get the answers from your
general knowledge before you search the net.
Send me the answers (vizierprof@verizon.net)
within the next two weeks, and if you get the
answers correct, you will see your name in the
next column. OK – let’s go.
It seems everyone loves the factoids so,
along with the Trivia Challenge, here are a few
more facts.

On October 26, 2006 BUSM’08 major and
standout Junior Quarterback, Chris Sharpe,
appeared on ESPNews©. He was interviewed
by anchor Dari Nowkhah and former Heisman
Trophy winner Desmond Howard. Chris was the
featured guest for their weekly College Football
Hotlist. In a big win over St. John Fisher,
Sharpe ran for 280 yards and scored a remarkable seven touchdowns, leaving him one shy of
the NCAA Division III record.
As of October 21, 2006 Sharpe is currently
ranked first in Division III with 175.6 rush yards
per game (YPG), and 21.4 points per game
(PPG). He has also set the Division III record
for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in

THANKSGIVING QUOTES OF
THE MONTH
Parrish
Parrish
“Nothing purchased can come close to the
renewed sense of gratitude for having family
and friends."
Author: Courtland Milloy

Parrish
"The Pilgrims made seven times more
graves than huts. No Americans have been
more impoverished than these who, nevertheless, set aside a day of thanksgiving."
Author: H. U. Westermayer
Thanksgiving dinners take eighteen
hours to prepare. They are consumed
in twelve minutes. Half-times take
twelve minutes. This is not coincidence.
