Academic Clinical Lectureships in Diabetes & Endocrinology These Academic Clinical Lectureship posts will allow the successful candidates to spend 50% of their time in clinical training and 50% of their time undertaking cutting edge research relating to Diabetes, Endocrinology or Obesity within the Department of Medicine at University College London. The Department has an outstanding record for undertaking translational research and opportunities exist for undertaking research relating to energy homeostasis, understanding the beneficial mechanisms of bariatric surgery, obesity in pregnancy, gestational diabetes, and reproductive physiology. The successful applicant will have access to world class basic science laboratories and interact with basic scientists and clinician scientists to develop their portfolio of research skills. The UCLH Centre for Weight Loss, Metabolic and Endocrine Surgery is one of the largest tertiary multidisciplinary obesity centres in the UK with an integrated clinical and research ethos thus offering the successful applicant unique translation research opportunities. The Clinical Research Facility at UCLH is well equipped for undertaking invasive healthy volunteer and patientbased studies. The academic component will be supervised by Dr Rachel Batterham (r.batterham@ucl.ac.uk), Head of the Centre for Obesity Research within the Department of Medicine. She has extensive expertise in undertaking translational research and she will facilitate the project decided upon by the successful applicant. During the academic research blocks the Academic Clinical Lecturer will have protected time to further develop academic skills, undertake high quality research and prepare and compete for an externally funded postdoctoral training fellowship. The training given will be flexible and trainee-centred. This post is open to Specialist Registrars (SpR) or Specialty Registrars (StR) who have completed a PhD/MD (or equivalent) in a relevant subject area or an MB PhD programme. • Candidates may apply for a Clinical Lectureship post only if they have already submitted their PhD/MD thesis at the time of application. This NIHR Academic Clinical Lectureships offer academic and clinical training in Diabetes & Endocrinology to those who have completed a higher degree (MD/PhD) and are at ST3 level or above are eligible to apply. The academic component of the training period will include postdoctoral research/educationalist career development with opportunities to develop an application for a postdoctoral training support (e.g. Clinician Scientist Award or Intermediate Fellowship). The end of the clinical lectureship is marked by the completion of clinical training and the attainment of a Certificate of Completion of Training and also by a period of high quality, further post-doctoral training. The Academic Clinical Lecturer will receive high quality clinical training within the hospitals of the North Central Thames SpR rotation in Diabetes and Endocrinology. The main aim of the clinical training programme is to ensure that the Academic Clinical Lecturer receives a full and balanced ongoing training in diabetes and endocrinology and the necessary clinical competencies commensurate with their stage within a supportive and friendly environment. The UCLH rotation offers first class training in all aspects of Diabetes and Endocrinology. The clinical component of this post will provide training in the in-patient management of diabetic and endocrine conditions. Out-patient training will be provided in general diabetes and endocrinology, accompanied with sub-speciality training in renal diabetes, diabetic and thyroid eye disease clinics, insulin pump and other novel therapies (including islet transplantation), paediatric and adolescent diabetes and endocrinology (Great Ormond Street and UCLH), reproductive and obstetric diabetes & endocrine medicine, intersex clinic, management of pituitary disorders (including dynamic endocrine assessment and peri-operative care), adult growth hormone deficiency and acromegaly clinic, osteoporosis clinics, lipid clinics and community diabetes clinics. In addition, highly specialized endocrine surgery is undertaken at both UCLH and RFH, offering excellent learning opportunities for the ACL. Regular appraisal and assessment will be undertaken as a two-way process, both to ascertain that satisfactory progress is made by the trainee and to ensure that each post provides good educational experience, and is an enjoyable experience.
