PROJECT WORK TAKEN UP DUIRNG MSc PROGRAMME
The project report entitled “Impact of Pesticides on Human Health” in Hirekotnekal Hobli, Manvi Taluka,
Raichur District was submitted during the second year of MSc (Ecology & Environment). The objective of the
research study was to assess the situation with regard to pesticide poisoning in Malkapur and Amareshwara
camp villages in Raichur. Cases of hospitalization or deaths or other cases of poisoning within the
agricultural worker community were documented. The study also assessed the use conditions of pesticides
in terms of safety, equipment and as well as re-use of empty containers. The level of awareness among
villagers with regards to pesticides use and the hazards that they pose was also documented.
TRAINING PROGRAMMES

Participated in the HORTIVAR Training Programme organized by the FAO, Rome from 11th to 14th
November, 2002. The training was an on-line programme giving details about how to get the information
about the cultivars grown in other parts of the countries along with the package of practice, details of the
pests etc.

Participated in the training on “Working with Newspaper” organized by Communication for Development
and Learning from 3rd to 5th of March, 2005. The training provided us with the tips on How to
communicate with the Press personal, How to write letter to the Editors, How to organize a Press
Conference and mainly learnt about How a newspaper works?

Participated in the training on “Writing a Case Study” organized by Communication for Development and
Learning from 13th to 15th of April, 2005 at Dharwad. The training concentrated on different aspects of
writing a case study i.e., how to prepare questions, how to conduct interview and how to prepare a
framework and perspective before starting to collect information.

Participated in the two day training programme on “Applied Bioinformatics” organized by Vittal Mallya
Scientific Research Foundation from 9 to 10 December, 2006.

Participated in the training program on “Internal Control System Documentation and Organic
Certification”, organized by Association for Promotion of Organic Farming (APOF) from 26th to 29th

CONTRIBUTION FOR BOOKS

Did research and collated information to assist in writing two chapters namely “Food Security and
Vegetables” and “Vegetable, Nutrition and Health” for a book on vegetables, which was released in the
month of November, 2007 during Krishi Mela organized by University of Agricultural Sciences,
Bangalore.

One of the contributors for the book titled “Nashisutiruva Neerina Gnana”, - documentation on the
indigenous knowledge of water management systems in Karnataka. The book was released on World
Water Day, 22nd March, 2006.

Coordinated and collated bio notes of Development Writers in Kerala and Karnataka for the book titled
“Samparka Sethu”.
CASE STUDIES
-
Wrote case study on Neeruganti System followed in Tumkur. The case study highlighted on the Jala
Samvardhana Yojana Sangha (JSYS) intervention in reviving this traditional system in Hariharapura
village of Pavagada Taluk, Tumkur District.

Wrote case study on “Farmers Field School”, an innovative approach of JSYS in collaboration with
University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad as a part of their tank rejuvenation programme. The case
study was done in Sagamakunte village in Raichur District.
CONTRIBUTION TO NEWSPAPERS
-
“Husti Emba Hasti”, (Husti – name of the plant in Kannada language) was published in Udayavani,
leading Kannada daily newspaper on 9th August, 2005. This article highlighted on the importance of this
plant which has medicinal value.

“Battling Fluorosis”, was published in Vijay Times, a leading English daily newspaper on
27th October, 2005 in Health and Fitness supplement. The study was carried out in Tumkur,
one of the districts of Karnataka, which is severely affected by Fluorosis. The article
highlights on the steps taken up by the Government Health Department, Engineering
Department and Education Department to manage the disease.

“Food Security through kitchen gardens”, was published in Deccan Herald, a leading English daily
newspaper on 6th February, 2007 in Spectrum supplement. The case study was made on the farmer
Choode Gowda in Thally village. The article highlighted the fact that food security could be achieved
with simple but effectively by maintaining kitchen garden in rural areas.

“Savayava Sagali” (meaning “Let Organic Farming go on”), was published in Udayavani, a leading
Kannada daily in Karnataka. This article was published on 26-Jan-09. The article gave a picture on the
Usefulness of following organic agriculture with the point of view farmers in Mandya, who are following
organic agriculture.
