Exploring Thang Long-Hanoi and Related Ancient Citadels
Program Description
The year 2010 marks the 1000th anniversary of the founding of Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam. This seminar
program introduces Thang Long-Hanoi and related ancient citadels to seminar participants. In addition, the
program explores the thoughts of the Vietnamese government and the local community’s on the preservation of
cultural heritage sites.
The six-day program consists of three parts:
1. Background presentations on the key themes of the program;
2. Field visits to the ancient citadel sites of Luy Lau, Co Loa, and Hoa Lu, as well as the sites in Hanoi and Bac
Ninh province;
3. Meetings with government officials and residents
The seminars use English as the primary language; Vietnamese presentations are translated.
Who Should Attend
Anyone in the general public interested in exploring Vietnam’s ancient citadels,
Professionals working in Vietnam or planning to work in Vietnam,
NGOs interested in cultural preservation,
Teachers, professors, and students.
Seminar Contributors
Dr. Thaveeporn Vasavakul oversees program organization and give seminar as well as on-site presentations. A
specialist in Vietnam and Southeast Asia with a Ph.D from the Department of Government from Cornell
University, she is currently working as an independent governance consultant and researcher in Vietnam.
Vietnamese are invited to contribute to the program. Details are available in the final seminar schedule.

Fees
The promotional program fee $495 (U.S. dollars). The fee covers the organizational expenses, administration,
reading materials, seminar presentations, on-site presentations, local transporation for field visits, admission
tickets, and small lunches when outside Hanoi. A 100% refund if you withdraw by the registration and payment
deadlines. Discounts for groups of ten or more participants.
