Syndrome Conference in Buckinghamshire. Below you will find a synopsis of the Keynote
Speeches as well as the afternoon workshops. You should choose one of the workshops and indicate this on the booking form. I look forward to welcoming you on 9 th October 2014.
Keynote Speech 1 – Inclusion: Getting it Right!
Inclusion is a term frequently used and often stated as an aim or objective, however there are a few simple steps that help all involved to make the experience as successful and positive as possible. This session will consider what aspects of the learning environment really combine to support successful inclusion. From environmental design, display and visual strategies through to effective working with other adults, the whole session will offer practical ideas to consider, evaluate and adapt to support your own practice.
Keynote Speech 2
– ICT to Support Learners with Down Syndrome
This session will focus on the role that technology has to support students that have addition barriers to learning. With Communication and Literacy as the starting point, the session will offer easy to replicate, fun and engaging ideas that you can use to support yourself and the students and their families that you work with. Don't be nervous, we will journey from lowtech through to high tech and portable touch technology with everything made simple and accessible!!!
Workshop a) Learning Profile & Teaching Strategies;
This workshop is for anyone new to teaching or supporting a child or young person with
Down syndrome or parents/carers that have not had any previous training. This workshop will help you to:
Have a greater understanding of what the effects of Down syndrome are
Understand the specific learning profile of children and young people with Down syndrome
Learn teaching strategies to support children and young people with Down syndrome
Learn models of support to use with children and young people with Down syndrome
Workshop b) Sensory Integration & Down Syndrome;
Specialist Occupational Therapist, Karen Holcombe will use a variety of styles and techniques to help you to understand and explore:
How to spot the signs and symptoms of Sensory Integration Dysfunction
How Sensory difficulties present themselves in our children at home
How Sensory behaviours present within the classroom and the impact that this has on school performance
Strategies and Sensory Activities that can be utilised at home and in school
Workshop c) Promoting Literacy Skills;
This workshop will explore how to develop literacy skills across the curriculum including;
Teaching reading
Developing essential skills for writing
Accessing the curriculum through differentiation
Resources and equipment
