EASL Sheila Sherlock Physician Scientist Fellowships
2014 application form
Open to all registered EASL members, aiming to enable physician-scientists to take a leave
from their clinical duties and to spend 6 or 12 months in a research laboratory.
One 6-month Physician Scientist Fellowship of 20,000 € and one 12-month Physician
Scientist Fellowship of 40,000 € are awarded each year.
Application and review process






Application for the Physician Scientist Fellowships is open from April 30 - June 30
Applications are reviewed by the EASL Scientific Committee Reviewers (2 external
experts nominated by the EASL Scientific Committee and 2-3 members of the EASL
Scientific Committee)
Applicants are notified by September 30
Successful applicants are requested to attend the International Liver Congress™
during which awardees are announced
Fellowship should begin by June of the following year
Requests for renewal, for an additional year, may be made no later than 2 months
before the termination of the fellowship, pending a progress report accompanied by a
letter from the tutor detailing the evolution of the project. The EASL Scientific
Committee may renew the fellowship further to the acceptance of the report
Conditions







Application should be made in English
Applicant must be a registered EASL member
Applicant can still be in training or already hold a permanent position
Research can be pursued in the applicant's home or an external hosting institution
(outside Europe)
Applicant should be working in an European institution at the time of application
Head of the hosting research unit has to be an EASL member but must not be EASL
Governing Board representative
No restriction on the applicant's age or nationality

The Physician Scientist Fellowships should be targeted at people who have completed a
PhD or at least be in the process of writing one up. In exceptional cases a candidate who has
published a number of high quality papers would be considered if they did not have a PhD.
