CEU Scholarships for Master and Doctoral Programmes 2012/2013

General Requirements
The following admissions requirements represent the university's general policies.
Individual departments may establish additional criteria for admission as deemed
necessary, including, but not limited to, specifying appropriate academic backgrounds
and requiring higher minimum language test scores.
Eligibility requirements for Master’s programs
Applicants must have a first degree from a recognized university or institution of higher
education, or provide documentation indicating that they will earn such a first degree
before enrolment in a CEU Master's program.
For its one-year US accredited Master’s programs, CEU normally accepts students
who have completed four years of undergraduate university study. Applicants with a
three-year Bachelor's degree will be considered for two-year Master's programs (both for
the ones accredited in the US and in Hungary).
Admission into the US accredited one-year programs with a three-year Bachelor’s
degree will also be possible for suitable candidates.
Eligibility requirements for Doctoral programs
Applicants must have a Master's degree (or equivalent) in a related field from a
recognized university or institution of higher education, or provide documentation
indicating that they will earn such a degree before enrolment in a CEU doctoral course of
study.
Students enrolled in a doctoral program at CEU must not be simultanously enrolled in
other institutions of higher education, and are required, at the beginning of their studies at
CEU, to sign a declaration to this effect.
Transfer from doctoral programs at other universities
Students enrolled in doctoral programs at other institutions may request transfer to a CEU
doctoral program. In such cases, the doctoral committee of the relevant CEU department
may accept the student on condition that the student:
-takes the complete coursework component of the program, or
-takes some courses of the coursework component of the program, and/or
-passes the comprehensive examination component of the coursework.
Eligibility Requirements for Non-degree Applicants .
Financial Aid
In order to attract outstanding individuals irrespective of their financial situation CEU
offers a range of Financial Aid packages supporting the majority of our students during
their studies. The main types of CEU Financial Aid include:
-CEU Fellowships for Master’s students (full and partial)
-Tuition waivers (full and partial)
-CEU Doctoral Fellowships for most students pursuing PhD degrees
-Externally Funded Financial Aid from the European Commission as well as other private
and public donors and organizations including federal loans for US citizens
-CEU Alumni Scholarships awarded to students in financial need who have a proven
record of leadership in extracurricular activities, community service and civic
engagement
In addition to its Financial Aid, CEU rewards academic excellence of its current students
through various research grants and achievement awards.
The CEU Business School website provides details on their Financial Aid policy which is
different from the rest of CEU.
Students who are interested in applying for CEU Financial Aid must complete the
Financial Aid section of the CEU online application form, indicating the type of Financial
Aid desired.
Admissions Process
The admissions process for Academic Year 2012/2013 is organized as follows:
January 25, 2012: Applications are submitted to degree programs.
Step 1: Pre-selection
Applications are evaluated on the basis of the applicant’s academic performance,
work experience, recommendations, and expectations of the program and future plans.
Individual interviews may take place, face-to-face or by telephone, throughout the
selection process.
After February 3, 2012: Pre-selection decisions are made available via the online
application system. Successful applicants having applied to take any CEU-administered
admissions examinations are notified of the testing arrangements by email.
Step 2: Testing
February 11, 2012: The CEU-administered TOEFL examination takes place.
February 11, 2012: Department-specific testing takes place:
Economics: Mathematics Test
Legal Studies: Legal Reasoning Test and Legal Essay
Mathematics: Mathematics examination
Medieval Studies: Supplementary examination
Political Science: Test of Writing Ability
Applicants who pass the pre-selection and who wish/are required to sit any CEUadministered admissions tests will be notified of the practical arrangements by the local
CEU coordinators organizing the tests. Please find here the list of locations where the
CEU-administered examinations are offered.
February 29, 2012: Standard English and GRE test score reports must be received by the
Admissions Office.
Step 3: Final evaluation
Applicants are evaluated by a departmental selection committee on the basis of past
academic achievement, recommendations, English language competency, intellectual
merit and general compatibility with the goals of the department.
After March 20, 2012: The final admissions decisions are made available to candidates
via the online application system.
CEU does not provide information about candidates’ admission progress before the
deadlines given here. Candidates’ information (including test results) is confidential
and only available to the candidate concerned.
