Twenty eighTH Sunday in ordinary time OCTOBER 12, 2014 A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR OFFICE OF THE CARDINAL Dear Parishioners, Taking place in Rome these days is an Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops discussing “The Pastoral Challenges of the Family in the Context of Evangelization.” Many issues are being discussed in the October 5-19 meeting. I have not seen a full listing of the topics but I am certain all of us can imagine the many concerns there are about marriage and family life. Rather than look for the listing, at this time I think it is a good idea to ask everyone who reads these words to take some time to say a prayer for the bishops and advisors meeting with Pope Francis these days (Cardinal Dolan is among them). I will write about the results of the Assembly once they are published. Our prayers for the Synod members can certainly focus on the need for spiritual guidance in these difficult times. Guidance for the Synod and above all guidance for families. Many families are challenged by difficulties and even families with healthy family life need support and encouragement. We should ask the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph to watch over all families. (The month of October is a great time to pray the Rosary for our families!) Let us also pray for our country and the whole world. Often, it seems the world is turning away from God’s ways. There are definitely some who would like to see mention of and reliance upon God fall away. Hold on to our Catholic faith and trust that God will never abandon His Church or the World. As difficult as life may seem, He promised to be with us always. Trust in God’s care. Sincerely in Christ, KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Knights of Columbus of Suffern will be selling Raffles tickets after all the Masses this weekend. Please help support the good causes of the Knights. Dear friends in the Lord: “Today, vast numbers of people still do not know Jesus Christ.” Pope Francis begins his message for this year’s celebration of World Mission Sunday with these words. But, he quickly offers us a way to make a joyfilled, life-giving difference. The Holy Father says: “World Mission Sunday is a privileged moment when the faithful of various continents engage in prayer and concrete gestures of solidarity in support of the young Churches in mission lands.” On October 19, as our archdiocesan family celebrates this “privileged moment,” let us join with our brothers and sisters around the world who will gather at the Lord’s Table to celebrate, with great joy, our common vocation as missionaries. Our “prayers” and “concrete gestures of solidarity” will help build local churches, like the church in Mongolia, the world’s youngest Catholic Church, and churches across the globe. Through the world of these churches and their witnesses to Christ, the poor receive practical help and experience God’s love, mercy, hope, and peace. Your financial assistance on World Mission Sunday, offered in the collection for the Society of the Propagation of the Faith, will support the 1,150 young mission (arch)dioceses and communities who await the “Good News” of Jesus as their saving hope. Pope Francis encourages us to take joyful part in the Church’s mission to all the nations as we live our lives grounded in love of Jesus and with concern for the needs of the most disadvantaged. May World Mission Sunday offer each one of us an opportunity to accomplish both as we share the joy of the Gospel and help the poor with our fervent prayers and through our generous hearts. With prayerful best wishes, I am, Faithfully in Christ, Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan World MISSION SUNDAY OCTOBER 19, 2014 Next weekend, October 18th and 19th the Church will celebrate World Mission Sunday. This year we are invited to act in solidarity with missionaries in India and throughout the world. Every day, faithful missionaries are reaching out in the name of Christ, offering practical, emotional and spiritual care to communities, children and families in desperate need, bringing the light of Christ to the darkest of circumstances.
