JOB DESCRIPTION
1.
THE TRAINING PROGRAMME
The South East Scotland Rotational Training Programme in Obstetrics and
Gynaecology is a 7 year structured training programme approved by the GMC and
supervised locally by the Postgraduate Dean. This LAT post vacancy is based at St
Johns Hospital, Howden, Livingston. It offers excellent experience in Obstetrics &
Gynaecology. Specialty interests include minimal access surgery, gynaecological
oncology. subfertility, assisted reproduction, maternal medicine, fetal medicine sexual
dysfunction, ultrasound, urogynaecology, reproductive endocrinology, colposcopy and
medical education.
It is expected that the successful candidate will participate fully in documentation of
his/her structured training, progress and personal development as outlined in the
RCOG guidelines on structured training. Attendance at the various postgraduate
lectures, seminars and also meetings of the Edinburgh Obstetric Society will be
encouraged. Registrars are entitled to up to 30 days study leave per year including
weekends during periods of continuous leave. Requests should be discussed with the
Clinical Director and completed forms then sent to the Postgraduate Training Unit,
Westport, Edinburgh, from where they will be forwarded to the Training Programme
Director.
2.
CLINICAL DUTIES OF THE POST
Under the direct supervision of the Consultant staff, the Doctor in training is
responsible for the in-patient and out-patient management of patients in both
Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
1.
Shares the responsibility for Antenatal Care, Labour Ward cover,
Gynaecological Out-Patient Clinics, Theatre sessions and emergency duties.
2.
Responsibility for administrative duties (e.g. correspondence; liaison with
general practitioners and other members of the health care team; review of
results of investigations) which arise as a consequence of these clinical duties.
3.
Participation in clinical audit, risk management and clinical governance
according to local policies and protocols.
4.
Participation in supervision and training of junior members of the staff team,
including workplace based assessment and appraisal.
The holder of this post will be required to undertake exposure prone invasive

procedures (EPPs). It should be noted that the offer of appointment is subject to
confirmation that the successful candidate is Hepatitis B immune. This is checked by
the Occupational Health Service prior to commencement.

3.
ACADEMIC AND RESEARCH DUTIES AND OPPORTUNITIES
All Specialty Registrars within the programme are expected to take part in
undergraduate teaching as well as the instruction of junior doctors and midwives where
appropriate. They will be encouraged to participate in clinical audit and clinical
research projects within those hospitals in which they work.
4.
HOURS OF DUTY
The basic working week is 40 hours per week for full time staff. The out-of-hours
commitment is organised on a full shift basis and the rota is EWTD compliant.
Practitioners shall be expected in the normal run of their duties, and within their
contract and job description to cover for the occasional brief absence of colleagues as
far as is practicable.
Practitioners will be prepared to perform duties in occasional emergencies and
unforeseen circumstances without additional remuneration, but may be granted time
off in lieu at the discretion of there employing authority. Commitments arising in such
circumstances are, however, exceptional and practitioners should not be required to
undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods on a regular basis.

St John’s Hospital opened in 1989 and is located in the centre of Livingston, a
new town about 30 minutes drive west from Edinburgh. The hospital provides for most
common specialties but does not have emergency general surgery or orthopaedic
trauma operating. The hospital has a paediatric ward and is the centre for:
 General Medicine with specialists in Cardiology, Diabetes &
Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Respiratory Medicine and Care
of the Elderly
 Obstetrics & Gynaecology
 Child Health including Paediatrics and community child health
 Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
 ENT
 Critical Care (ITU, HDU and CCU)
 Accident and Emergency
 General Surgery
 Orthopaedics
 Anaesthetics
 Mental Health including ICCU and ICPU
5.
The Obstetric and Gynaecological Services at St John’s comprises 50 obstetric beds,
including a day bed unit, and 20 gynaecological beds (12 in-patient and eight day
beds). The department handles approximately 2,700 deliveries and has over 4,000
new gynaecological outpatient referrals. There is an outreach antenatal service
covering West Lothian and part of the west of Edinburgh. Special interests of the
department include urogynaecology, menstrual dysfunction, fetomaternal medicine,
obstetric medicine clinic, Twins clinic, obstetric ultrasound, Antenatal day bed
assessment unit, early pregnancy assessment gynae-oncology and colposcopy. A full
range of benign gynaecological surgery is offered in the department. Tertiary referral
services for Fetal medicine, Assisted reproduction, Gynae Oncology are based at The
Simpson centre for reproductive Health, New Royal infirmary Edinburgh. There are
strong links between the two maternity units.
The staffing in the department consists of 10 Consultants, 1 associate specialist, 5
Speciality doctors, 6 ST career O&G trainees, 4 GPST trainees and 2 FY2 doctors.
Recent developments at SJH include a new endoscopy suite, an Intensive Psychiatric
Care Unit, a day surgery centre, a digital mammography unit, an oncology (cancer
care) day centre, a satellite renal dialysis unit and a £2.75m reprovision of A&E. There
are full supporting Laboratory and Diagnostic Radiology Services (including CT,
Ultrasound and NM).
The hospital has been accredited full teaching hospital status by the University of
Edinburgh. There is a full range of lecture theatres, a library and AV facilities.
