Young Family of Danford Village Quebec John YOUNG, b. ?, died Apr. 1, 1923, was the son of James YOUNG of Bedford, and Jane McKEVER? (his first wife). He was a sawyer and millright and in the late 1880`s he and his younger half-brother Samuel came to what would be known later as Danford Village. They were lured to the area by the large virgin pine that abounded in the Gatineau at that time. The YOUNG brothers had lived for a time in the Sangster area prior to moving to Danford. On Nov., 12, 1895 John married Jane CUTHBERTSON, the dtr. of Lewis CUTHBERTON and Elizabeth REID, of Lanark, Ont. No family. There were no houses in Danford when John and Sam arrived. John built the first house, located across the Street from the Presbyterian (United) Church. Later tenants were: Fred and Tory PRESLEY, Celima Joe FRASER, Beattie and Andy KNOX. The property was acquired by Sam and Phyllis MOLYNEAUX who demolished the house in 1990. Although a Roman Catholic, John is buried in Holy Trinity Anglican Cemetery, Danford. Before her death Jane was cared for by Tom HOWARD. (she had an a ailment that resembled Alzheimer`s Disease). Danford Lake, Pontiac County, Que., THE LATE MR. YOUNG May 12, 1911 Deep regret has been felt here at the sudden and accidental death of one of Danford Lake's prominent members, in the person of Mr. Samuel Young, who met a sad end in his saw mill here on Thursday evening, April 27. One of the belts in the lower part of the mill came off and Mr. Younge went down to put it on, and in doing so it is thought that he reached over a spindle which was then revolving at a great rate of speed and from which a small bolt was projecting out a very short distance. It is believed that this bolt caught in his clothing and he was carried round on the spindle, his head striking a plank that lay on the floor each time that he was carried round. Mr. H. Lummis, who was measuring lumber, saw there was something wrong and ran inside. All he could see was a cloud of saw-dust whirling round the spindle, and he hurried to the engine room and shut off the steam, and although only a few seconds had elapsed from the time the accident was noticed till the mill was stopped yet it was too late to save the life of the poor victim. When the workmen picked his up, life was already extinct. Dr. C.M. Gordon was summoned at once by 'phone and everything done that possibly could be done under the circumstances but of no avail. The funeral took place on April 29th at 2 o'clock, the funeral service being conducted in the Anglican church by Rev. G.H. Gagnon, assisted by Rev. A. Allan of River Desert. Many of the friends and neighbors were in attendance and the service was a very impressive one. Much praise is due Mr. H. Lummis for the able way in which he conducted every detail in connection with the funeral, in the absence of the undertaker, who was ill. The late Mr. Young was fifty-two years of age and was a very quiet, inoffensive man. His home was in Sangster, Ont., but about sixteen years ago he moved to Danford Lake where he has since resided. He leaves a wife, two sons and six daughters, also an aged father, sever sisters and two brothers. The family have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement. Danford Village YOUNG - ADE Samuel YOUNG, b. Sept. 8, 1858, at Bedford, near Kingston, Ont. d. Apr. 27, 1916, was the son of James YOUNG, a Schoolmaster of Cork, Ireland, and Rachael REYNOLDS, his second wife, of Swansea, Wales. (James` first wife was also from Ireland. She gave birth to John and Liza but died shortly afterwords.) Samuel m. Elizabeth Susan Rich ADE, b. July 14, 1861, d. June 5, 1923, dau. of Charles ADE and Elizabeth RICH. (Susan`s maternal Grandmother was a HYDE). Her parents came from Wilmonton, England, to farm in Bristol, Que. The Bristol Iron Mines were discovered, partly on Susan`s brother James ADE`s farm and partly on their neighbor, Mr. KILROY`s property. Sam and Susan lived in Bristol Mines and in Sangster, Que., where the first four of their eight children were born. In the late 1880`s, Sam, a sawyer, and his older, half-brother, John, came to what would later become known as the Village of Danford, lured there by the tall, virgin pine that were so abundant in the area. John had erected the first house in the area in 1888 and Sam built the second house, located "around the bend in the creek" on the Western outskirts of the future village. Four more children were born to Sam and Susan in their new house. [The property subsequently was owned by Jim MILFORD and Clara ROGAN, Elija PECK and Vera McLELLAND and later on by Jim ANDERSON and Ray MILFORD. The current owners are Ricky MERRIFIELD and his wife, Cindy PECK]. In 1896, Sam built and operated Danford`s first sawmill. It was located on the shore of the Kazabazua Creek (where Mason MILFORD later built his house). Sam was accidentally killed in his Mill. (see Obit.) Much of the lumber for Danford`s first Anglican Church,Holy Trinity, was donated by Sam YOUNG. Two of the YOUNG dauters, Nell and Millie, recalls that their Father brought a Scottish orphan, Sam LOUGHHEED (or LOCKHEED) home and told his wife that "there was always room for another Sam". They raised the boy, who grew up and become an Anglican Minister, serving in Moose Jaw, Sask. (Susan ADE`s sibblings were: Big Tom, a lineman for Ottawa Electric; James (Maggie SPARLING); Charles; Betsy (Bessie) (A. TYLER). She was a Nurse in Calif,; Rose (Joe GLENN); Mary ? (Mr. SMITH) [Mary may not belong here]. Sam YOUNG`s sibblings were: Half-brother John (Jane CUTHBERTSON); half-sister, Liza, single; Tom (Mary Ann O`CONNOR; Kate (SHAW); Mary (McCOWAN); Margaret (CRAIG); Sarah (JENNINGS); Martha (single); and Emma (NAPHAM).
