Chapter 1 Study Guide
-
The Northeast Region of the United States has four seasons. It has
very cold winters. The summers there are very hot and wet which
helps plants and other foods grow.
-
The Southwest Region has a hot and dry climate which might make
growing food difficult for people. Irrigation is needed for most crops.
-
The seasons occur because parts of the earth receive different amounts of
sunlight and hear at different times of the year. These changes are more
noticeable in some places than in others. Some places have four distinct
seasons. One example is Ohio. Other places are mostly warm all year like
Florida. Other areas are mostly cold all year like Alaska.
-
The geography and climate of the United States is very diverse (different).
The United States is a large land with a variety of landforms, including
mountains, hills, plains, valleys, deserts, rivers, and lakes.
-
The three largest countries in North America are Canada, United States and
Mexico
-
Places closer to the equator are warmer because the sun shines more directly
on the earth at the equator.
-
The climate is also very different or diverse across the United States. There
are areas that are warm all year like the southern states and other regions have
all four seasons with hot summers and cold winters like in the Midwest.
