INQUA-PAGES-IGCP464 joint workshop Hong Kong May 9-13 2005 1st CIRCULAR International Workshop on Sub-aerially exposed continental shelves since the Middle Pleistocene climatic transition (A 10th Anniversary Celebration Event of the Department of Earth Sciences, The University of Hong Kong) Date - May 9-13, 2005 Venue - The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR, China Organizer - Department of Earth Sciences, The University of Hong Kong Sponsors - International Union for Quaternary Research (INQUA) PAGES, International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) Dr Stephen S.F. Hui Trust Department of Earth Sciences, The University of Hong Kong Collaborating bodies - Commission on Coastal & Marine Processes, INQUA Land-ocean Interactions in the Coastal Zone, IGBP CHANGES (Carbon Hydrology & Global Environmental Systems) co-initiative IGCP 448 World correlation on karst ecosystems IGCP 459 Terrestrial carbon cycle IGCP 464 Continental shelves during the last glacial cycle IGCP 475 Deltas in the monsoon Asia-Pacific region IGCP 495 Quaternary land-ocean interactions Geological Society of Hong Kong Hong Kong Regional Group, Geological Society of London Background This initial workshop forms part of a 3-year project (2004-2007) supported by INQUA through the Commission on Coastal & Marine Processes. The project is aimed at the study of terrestrial deposits in sub-aerially exposed continental shelves since the Middle Pleistocene climatic transition (MIS 13). An important focus is the role of sub-aerially exposed continental shelves in carbon storage and the likely contribution of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Abstracts on all aspects of continental shelf sciences are welcomed and possible topics covered may include: Land-sea correlation Sea-level changes Landslide deposits Fluvial and deltaic deposits Aeolian deposits Karst deposits including coral reefs and speleothems Land bridges as migration routes Stratigraphy and geochronology Palaeopedology and production of greenhouse gases Palaeo-flora and palaeo-fauna Tectonic stability and instability In Year Two (2006), a field meeting will be held at a location to be decided upon at the Hong Kong workshop and attendees are invited to express interest in holding this meeting. It is 1 anticipated that the final meeting in Year Three (2007) will be a symposium at the 17th INQUA Congress in Cairns, Australia.
