Kabelac, Elizabeth Reed (Lyon)
AUBURN < Elizabeth Reed (Lyon) Kabelac, 93, most recently of Auburn, died May 21,
2006, after several months of declining health. She was born in the village of Aurora on
July 12, 1912, the daughter of Sanford Gifford Lyon, an Aurora businessman and civic
leader, and Josephine (Head) Lyon, a school teacher. She spent most of her life in
Aurora, graduating from Cayuga Lake Academy in 1930. She graduated from Elmira
College in 1934 and the Syracuse University Library School in 1938. On April 19, 1941,
in Ithaca, she married Edward Kabelac of Rochester. He predeceased her after 58 years of
marriage, in 1999. During her work career, she was employed as a librarian at Cornell
University, Sherwood Central School and Wells College. One of her hobbies was
genealogy, and she was a 50-year member of the New England Historic Genealogical
Society. When her children were in school, she was active in the Sherwood PTA. She
was a long-time member of the Aurora Literary Thursday Club. She was also an active
member of the former St. Paul"s Episcopal Church in Aurora, and then the United
Ministry of Aurora. In her retirement years, she and her husband enjoyed a number of
Elderhostel programs. She is survived by her brother, Malcolm Gifford Lyon of
Fernandina Beach, Fla.; four sons, Karl of Rochester, Kurt (Penelope Evans) and Edward
(Linda) of Ithaca, and Kenneth (Linda) of Aurora; four grandchildren, Nathan, Karen,
Julie and Lori Kabelac; and several nieces, a nephew and cousins. Friends may call from
2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, at the Shakelton Funeral Home, 418 Main St.,
Aurora. A service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 25, in the United Ministries
Church, Main Street, Aurora, with the Rev. Robert Hugh French officiating, and the Rev.
Robert Herst co-officiating. Interment will be in Oak Glen Cemetery, Aurora, where she
will join her husband, her parents, and generations of other relatives and ancestors.
