Fully set up for the next winter season
New CV winter tire sizes from Continental
Hanover, October 6, 2011. The demand for truck winter tires has risen following the recent
hard winters and the enforcement of the new winter tire law in Germany. Thanks to a clever
tread design and a specially developed tread compound for winter usage, the modern winter
tires are in no way inferior to the summer treads. Continental has rounded off the
Scandinavia 2 winter tire generation, which was introduced last year and has been extremely
successful, with five new tire sizes.
During the last few tough winter seasons, the Continental Scandinavia winter tires for tractor
units, trailers and semi-trailers impressively proved that optimum traction and fuel economy
can be united. The high-performance winter tires from the new Scandinavia 2 generation
contribute a decisive gain in safety on winter roads thanks to a particularly tight tread
geometry and a new, softer tread compound with micromeshing effect.
Five new sizes have been added to the wide range of Scandinavia tires for the coming winter
season. The new 315/70 R 22.5 XL, 315/60 R 22.5 XL and 355/50 R 22.5 XL sizes complete
the line-up for the steering axle. The new winter treads with special uprated load versions
take the increasing weight of the future Euro 6 engines with greater front-axle load-bearing
capacity into account.
This allows use, for example, of the new Continental HSW2 Scandinavia in 355/50 R 22.5 XL
size for up to 8 tonnes axle load. The three XL versions of the two new low-section tires have
been added in the sizes 295/60 R 22.5 and 315/60 R 22.5 for the drive axle.
All steering axle tires from the new Scandinavia 2 generation feature an intelligent tread
design that provides optimum road contact on different surfaces by means of a multitude of
longitudinal grooves, lateral grooves and sipes. Numerous gripping edges for side support
and grip on slippery surfaces are formed by the ribbed profile that is frequently interrupted.

particularly well on ice and compacted snow. The wide shoulder rib on the winter tire
provides optimum support against the lateral forces occurring in corners.
Over the course of the tire life, the new Continental Scandinavia changes its product
character thanks to its two-phase tread configuration. During winter use, the Scandinavia
winter tire with a maximum number of gripping edges provides maximum grip. As the tire
wears, the tread pattern turns into a summer tire thanks to the considerably higher rubber
content, which has a positive effect on the load-bearing capacity, driving stability and
consumption.
