Dear Parent/Carer

Kirn Primary School – August Update (No. 2)

The new Kirn Primary School project took another significant step forward last week when the council’s Policy and Resources Committee approved the Stage 1 submission from hubNorth Scotland Ltd.

The Stage 1 submission sets out the key design features and cost plan for the new school. The project now can officially move to Stage 2 that will see the detailed design work being completed. Some of this work has already started. For example, initial discussions with the school about the internal layouts for all rooms in the new school.

A reminder that the school plans can be viewed as part of the planning application through the public access section of the council’s website using the reference number: 15/01969/PP. The planning application will be determined in the next two to three months.

Decant of Kirn Primary School to Dunoon Grammar School

As part of the Stage 1 submission, hubNorth has set out a revised construction programme for the new Kirn Primary School. The original intention was that the contract would be signed in time to allow Kirn pupils and staff to decant to Dunoon

Grammar School during the forthcoming October holiday. The decant will not be taking place in October.

The construction programme now has Morrison Construction moving onto the Kirn site in January 2016. The decant period will now be planned for the move to take place in December 2015 with Kirn pupils and staff starting the new term in January in the Grammar School.

The new Kirn Primary School development is a large and complex construction project that includes a refurbishment of the existing 1881 building, a complete demolition of all other school buildings, and will include a significant amount of ground works. It has not been possible to keep to the existing programme as previously in timated. The council’s Project Team with hubNorth will continue to drive

this project forward to allow the decant to take place in December.

A large amount of survey work has taken place at Dunoon Grammar School in preparation for the decant. The final details of this are being coordinated and we will continue to keep you informed as the project progresses with newsletters and updates on a dedicated page on the council website at www.argyll-bute.gov.uk/new-kirnprimary , school websites and, where appropriate, in the local press.

Yours sincerely
