30th Belgrade Jazz Festival
Sun, 10/05/2014 - 15:17 -- MRS
The jubilee, 30th Belgrade Jazz Festival will be held from 24 to 27 October, under the headline
“Jazz All Stars”. The organizers have pointed that it is a special occasion when a cultural event lives
to see its 30th edition and endures for more than four decades. Founded in 1971, our oldest and
most eminent jazz festival could not avoid the attention of the world, where such jubilees are
unique. Also contributing to the great international reputation is the fact that this year the Belgrade
Jazz Festival has been admitted to the Europe Jazz Network, as the only event of that kind from
Serbia.
During this year’s festival, the audience will be able to see thirteen concerts of the most
contemporary jazz artists from the USA, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Portugal
and Serbia. Special program units that the organizers have stressed are the “Germany in Focus”,
done in cooperation with the Goethe Institute, and which features the futuristic jazz project “1+1”
of Nils Petter Molvaer and Moritz von Oswald, as well as the concert of Nils Wogram and his
Nostalgia trio. Also announced is the appearance of one the most eminent European jazz proponents
of the last few decades, Paolo Fresu and his quintet, presented in cooperation with the Italian
Cultural Institute. Paolo Fresu celebrates thirty years of work by playing at the 30th Belgrade Jazz
Festival, accompanied by the selection of Italy’s best jazz representatives. As a special treat, the
organizers have a unique Afro-jazz project of Austrian sax player Wolfgang Puschnig and
Mamadou Diabate, a virtuoso of the African instrument balaphone, who will play on October 25.
The next day, within the program “European verticals”, Belgrade will host several young talents,
among whom Swiss pianist Sylvie Courvoisier, who will perform with violinist Mark Feldman, but
there will also be the popular Red Trio from Portugal, considered to be one of the best modern freejazz bands in Europe.
The greatest interest has been shown for the opening of the festival on October 24, when the
Belgrade audience will see the spectacular Children of the Light Trio, comprised of best
instrumentalists of our days – Danilo Perez on the piano, John Patitucci on the bass and Brian Blade
on drums. A special program is also planned for the closing night of the festival, when two biggest
stars of this year’s event will be on the stage – the quartet of Charles Lloyd and the trio of piano
virtuoso Michel Camilo. In his Serbian premiere appearance, Camilo will take the audience through
the history of Latin sounds combined with outstanding improvisation.
“Jazz All Stars” will also feature the most successful national musicians. Vasil Hadzimanov and his
band will present the specially prepared project for this festival, in cooperation with American sax
player David Binney, and the young forces will be represented by the ensemble Serbian Jazz Bre!
and the Max Kochetov Quartet.
