Bharti Airtel Limited is India’s largest integrated and the first private telecom services provider with a
footprint in all the 23 telecom circles in the country. Bharti Airtel, since its inception, has been at the
forefront of technology and has steered the course of the telecom sector in the country with its world class
products and services. The businesses at Bharti Airtel have been structured into three individual strategic
business units including: Mobile Services, Airtel Telemedia Services and Enterprise Services.
The mobile business provides mobile and fixed wireless services using GSM technology across 23 telecom
circles, while the Airtel Telemedia Services business offers broadband and telephone services in 94 cities.
The Enterprise Services provides end-to-end telecom solutions to corporate customers and national and

CHALLENGE
Bharti Airtel had outsourced its IT operations to IBM and telecom operations to other network equipment
providers (NEPs). With the expansion of its services that operate on the IT network, the existing
infrastructure was getting severely loaded and was getting increasingly vulnerable to breakdown. Bharti
Airtel needed to separate the traffic on the basis of IT and telecom applications, which required a
segregation of the whole network.
IBM SOLUTION
Bharti Airtel engaged IBM Global Technology Services - Integrated Technology Services (GTS-ITS) for
its service requirements. As a part of the integrated communication solution, the GTS-ITS team assessed
Bharti Airtel’s existing IT infrastructure and designed an integrated communication networking and
optimization strategy. It also segregated the LAN/WAN infrastructure across the 23 circles within Bharti
Airtel Ltd. The solution involved the supply of active, as well as, passive network infrastructure equipment
including Cisco Catalyst Switches with Cisco Network Management and Cisco Routers with network
integration and optimization. IBM Global solution alliance partner, Cisco, provided catalyst switches,
routers and network management as part of the total solution.
The IBM GTS-ITS integrated network communications solution and additional components offered by
Cisco, have enabled Bharti Airtel to manage and utilize its IT infrastructure efficiently. It has also
improved the identification and provisioning of its telecom traffic. The solution has provided Bharti Airtel
with a more robust environment for its infrastructure and telecom traffic.
