Graduate Student Support Plan
In-State Tuition and Tuition Remission Exceptions for Time Extensions
Originally Effective Fall 2006
GSSP Exception Rules F11 - S12
1. Doctoral students who do not have a master’s degree in the same or a related
field upon admission to the Graduate School at NC State:
By current rules of the Plan students are eligible for tuition for ten (10) semesters after
initial enrollment in the Graduate School at NC State as long as they register for a
minimum of nine (9) credit hours for the first eight (8) semesters and a minimum of
three (3) credit hours for the last two semesters.
Subject to the availability of funds, exceptions will be considered for three (3) hours of
899 (Doctoral Dissertation Preparation) during the eleventh (11th) and twelfth (12th)
semesters after initial enrollment. This means that students must complete their
preliminary exam prior to the start of the eleventh (11th) semester to be considered for an
exception.
No exceptions will be allowed after the twelfth (12th) semester.
2. Doctoral students who have a master’s degree in the same or a related field upon
admission to the Graduate School at NC State:
By current rules of the Plan (revised July 14, 2006) students are eligible for tuition for
eight (8) semesters after initial enrollment in the Graduate School at NC State as long
as they register for a minimum of nine (9) credit hours in each of the first six (6)
semesters and a minimum of 3 hours in the seventh and eight semesters.
Subject to the availability of funds, exceptions will also be considered for three (3)
hours of 899 (Doctoral Dissertation Preparation) during the ninth (9th) and tenth (10th)
semesters after initial enrollment. This means that students must complete their
preliminary exam prior to the start of the ninth (9th) semester to be considered for an
exception.
No exceptions will be allowed after the tenth (10th) semester.
3. Master’s Students:
By current rules of the Plan students are eligible for tuition payments for four (4)
semesters after initial enrollment in the Graduate School at NC State as long as they
register for a minimum of nine (9) credit hours for the first three (3) semesters and a
minimum of three (3) credit hours in the fourth (4th) semester.
Subject to the availability of funds, exceptions will be considered during the fifth (5th)
and (6th) semesters under the following conditions:




Registration for no more than and no less than three (3) hours of 699 (Master’s
Thesis Preparation) for students in a program with a thesis requirement, or
Registration for a minimum of nine (9) hours, if nine (9) or more hours are
needed to satisfy requirements for the degree as outlined on the students plan
of work, or
Registration for the course(s) and credits remaining to satisfy requirements for
the degree as specified on the student’s plan of work, or
Registration for three (3) hours, to include final credits needed to satisfy the
remaining degree requirements as specified in the student’s plan of work.
No exceptions will be allowed after the sixth (6th) semester.
