Action verbs are words that tell about what people, things, and animals
do.

Add an –s to most action verbs when you tell what one person,
animal, or thing does.
Do not add –s when you are telling about two or more people,
animals, or things.
Procedures:
Action Verbs
1. Access Prior Knowledge: Read aloud the text “Cows Give Milk”, which
is based on “Farms”. Point to the pictures on pages 112, 114, and 115
as you read. Bolded words on chart are action verbs. Ask students to
identify the action words in the text to find out what they know.
2. Show Power point on action words.
3. Think Pair Share:-pass out dry erase boards and markers to partners.
Instruct groups to draw a web of as many action words they can think
of. Choose two of those words to act out for the class.
4. Come back together to large group. Let partners volunteer to act out
their actions. Other students try to guess the action words.
5. On large sheet of bulletin board paper, the teacher construct a large
web of action words with suggestions from partner work.
6. Use prepared word cards (nouns & pronouns) to match with various
action words from the action word web.
Example: They live, cows eat, the farmer makes, we buy
7. Explain subject-verb agreement. See T106d of teacher’s book.
8. Use cooperative groups of four students to create oral sentences
using the matched words. Groups may use chart paper, dry erase
boards or bulletin board paper to record sentences. Groups must
create at least one sentence per student in the group.
9. Teacher monitors progress of each group, and provides support as
needed. Each group displays its work and reads to the class. Group
members take turns reading sentences.
10. Close and Assess: Display the words buy, take, live, and eat. Students
complete these sentences with the correct forms of the verbs:
The cows ____________ on farms.
The cow _____________ grass.
Trucks ______________ milk to the market.
I __________ milk at the market.
