POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Director of Biological Services, the Inland Fish and Wildlife

Biologist is responsible for assisting with the development and implementation of the tribal inland fish and wildlife assessment, research, and monitoring program designed to aid the Tribe in managing inland fish and wildlife resources. The position requires effective planning, administrative, supervisory, communication, fishery, and wildlife management skills. The individual is responsible for development and implementation of cooperative fishery and wildlife assessment projects and data exchange with various

Tribal, State, Federal, Provincial, and First Nation governments as required by the 2007

United States vs. Michigan Consent Decree. Serve as a tribal representative on inland fish and wildlife interagency technical committees.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1.

Responsible for developing annual work plans, applicable project proposals and grant applications, and administrative reports, and adjusting plans as new information is gathered.

2.

Responsible implementation of work plans, data sharing with other tribal, state and federal agencies, and representing Bay Mills Indian Community on interagency technical committees.

3.

Responsible for the construction, manipulation, and analysis of large data sets.

4.

Responsible for helping with evaluating, training, and supervising technicians, fishery aides, and other employees.

5.

The Inland Fish and Wildlife Biologist must be able to effectively communicate while training and supervising employees, assigning work tasks, presenting project results, and educating tribal members when requested.

6.

May be responsible for the presentation of oral and written reports for various professional and non-professional presentations.

7.

Provide the Tribe's Conservation Committee with necessary information for making informed management decisions.

8.

Must be familiar with techniques and assessment gear necessary to capture and/or sample fish and wildlife populations.

9.

Supervise and assist with maintenance and repair of departmental equipment including boats, motors, vehicles, and nets.

10.

Safely operate vehicles and vessels using GPS, compass.

11.

Any other duties may be assigned within the scope and complexity of this position.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :

The Inland Fish and Wildlife Biologist will be responsible for insuring his/her safety and the safety of others during all work hours. This position requires working in adverse weather, extended workdays, heavy lifting exceeding 100 pounds, daytime travel exceeding eight hours, and extended overnight travel of one week or more.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

1.

Must be familiar with all principals of fishery and wildlife biology and population dynamics.

2.

Must have Bachelor’s Degree in Fisheries, Wildlife or related field with three years experience working with fish and wildlife populations OR must have Master’s

Degree in Fisheries, Wildlife or related field with one to three years experience working with fish and wildlife populations.

3.

Prior training and/or work experience should include collection and organization of fishery and wildlife data, sampling techniques, deployment of various assessment gears, and aging and analysis of growth, anatomy, diet, behavior, and habitat use.

Experience estimating population parameters and characteristics such as growth and mortality, length/weight relations, exploitation, movement, population size and biomass is essential.

4.

A thorough understanding of computer techniques including data storage, retrieval, statistical analysis and population modeling is essential. Familiarity with spreadsheets, databases, statistical, word processing, graphics, and presentation computer programs is necessary. Working knowledge of GIS software.

5.

Prior experience supervising and managing employees is necessary.

6.

Knowledge of net mending and construction.

7.

Familiarity with various funding sources, accounting techniques, budget review and approval processes is preferred.

8.

The Inland Fish and Wildlife Biologist must have strong written and oral communication skill.

9.

Must have the ability to work independently.

10.

Must have an excellent past work record.

11.

Must have a good driving record and valid driver's license.

12.

To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each function listed under the essential functions and physical demands categories of this position description.

PREFERENCE: Preference will be given to those individuals of Native American descent.
