VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES – New Listings Volunteer Translation Services Translations Virtual Ashoka frequently has a general need for translations to and from English in a variety of languages. The most requested languages are Spanish; Portuguese; French; German; Arabic; Thai; and Indonesian, but it is helpful to have experienced translators on call for any language. Translate the Volunteer Newsletter from English to Spanish Virtual The Volunteer Newsletter has a global subscription base of over 1000 potential volunteers who are interested in helping Ashoka Fellows and staff accomplish systemic social change around the world. Help expand the readership of this bimonthly publication, which varies in length between 20-30 pages, by translating it from English to Spanish. If you can help, contact Beth Inabinett at binabinett@ashoka.org Translate the Ashoka Welcome Packet Virtual The Ashoka Global Fellowship Team has recently revised its Welcome Packet, introductory material orienting new Fellows to Ashoka. The team is looking for volunteers to help translate the packet into a number of languages so it can be easily read by Fellows from around the world. The packet is 56 pages of general information, not very dense but with some terminology particular to Ashoka. If you are extremely proficient at translating from English to Thai, Indonesian, Polish, German or Arabic and would like to help with a section or more of the packet, please send a description of your experience and the time you have available to devote to the project. We will then provide you with a sample page so you can get a better feel for the material. If you can help, contact Beth Inabinett at binabinett@ashoka.org Translate Ashoka’s “Fellowship Express” from English to Spanish Virtual The “Fellowship Express” is a quarterly publication with global electronic distribution to over 1700 Ashoka Fellows around the world. It highlights new Fellowship programs along with collaborations and exchanges this international community of Fellows undertake to further their work across countries and regions of the world. Each quarterly Express is between 7-10 pages in a newsletter format. She is looking for someone who could help translate a variety of general documents from Portuguese to English. If you can help, contact Amalia at amalia@angelaborbafundo.org Translation from English to Portuguese Virtual Jose Marmo da Silva (Ashoka Fellow, Brazil) promotes health from the perspective of Afro-Brazilian culture, breaking new ground in the fight against the spread of HIV/Aids within this community. He needs volunteers who will help translate educational materials from English into Portuguese. If you can help, contact Mr. da Silva at mguimar@uol.com.br Translation from English to Portuguese and Portuguese to English Virtual The Association of Parents and Friends of Special People (AAPPE), led by Irae Cardoso (Ashoka Fellow, Brazil), is an organization that works with the deaf and special needs communities in the state of Alagoas, in the northeast area of Brazil. AAPPE is looking for a volunteer to help translate organizational materials into English for a partnership with an institution for deaf children in England and for general international use. They also need translation of documents from English into Portuguese. Translate from German to English Virtual Youth Venture is an Ashoka initiative that inspires and supports entrepreneurial youth in their own social ventures. The Youth Venture team in Germany would like to share their 3 program with Ashoka’s Global team and needs a volunteer who can translate their materials from German to English. If you can help, please contact Lilli von Bodman at lbodman@ashoka.org Translate, Proofread, Narrate Stories for Literacy Project Virtual Dr. Brij Kothari (Ashoka Fellow, India) promotes literacy in novel ways through his organization, PlanetRead (www.PlanetRead.org). One is BookBox, a social enterprise which is a web-based jukebox of digital books in over 24 languages (including 10 Indian languages). BookBox’s strategy is the proven approach of Same Language Subtitling (SLS) pioneered by Planet Read. BookBox grew out of a business plan competition at Stanford University, which PlanetRead won. It contains a feature called “AddMyLanguage” through which people from any part of the world can add their languages to the stories. It has generated enormous enthusiastic response. Dr. Kothari is looking for language experts who can proofread, translate and narrate the stories. He needs expertise in Kiswahili, Thai, Kurdish, Finnish and Swedish. The most urgent and current need is for Kiswahili. Volunteers must have excellent language command and should be able to work quickly through email and from home. An ability to narrate stories from home is a plus. A long term relationship is desired. The team is looking for volunteers who can program HTML, use Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver, and who 4 have ideas about digital marketing, such as within MySpace and other German youthrelated websites. For more information contact Coumba Toure at sahel@ashoka.org Survey Indian Fellows on New Tools to Focus and Expand Their Programs New Delhi, India or Virtual Explore Fellow interest in sharing, learning about and adopting social and environmental impact measurements tools. This would involve: Researching existing impact measurement tools internationally to see which ones would be best suited to Fellows’ situational needs. Identifying which Fellows would like to advance to their next level of growth through training and mentoring on finances, linkages, impact measurement tools and growth plans. Identifying Fellows who wish to receive training on Adaptive Blueprinting Methodology that will allow for wider dissemination of their ideas, smarter collaboration and community-building. The timeline for these projects is 3-5 months and work will be based in the New Delhi office. A small stipend of around Rs.4000 a month may be available. Virtual, off-site assistance would also be helpful. Volunteers should have 3-4 years work experience, a strong understanding of the needs of the citizen sector, be conversant with social impact measurement concepts and tools, be a team player, and be comfortable with the Indian experience. Good research, analytical and quantitative skills, along with good listening and people skills, are important. Metropolitan Area Many international Fellows travel to the Washington area to advocate and fundraise for their causes. Organize Global Contacts for Full Economic Citizenship Initiative Arlington, VA and Virtual The Full Economic Citizenship (FEC) initiative aims to create inclusive economies in which every individual has the ability and choice to actively participate in the local and global economies as producers, consumers, and wealth creators. FEC brings together businesses and citizen organizations in partnerships that can help each increase their social impact. FEC is looking for a Contact and Relationship Management volunteer to assist with the consolidation and organization of their rapidly expanding global resources and contacts. This would involve communicating internationally, updating contact information, assisting with the consolidation of country teams’ contacts, and managing other tasks that arise. They are looking for a volunteer with strong organizational and computer skills (experience with Excel is necessary; experience with databases preferred). The volunteer would be needed one to two days per week throughout the summer, generally in Arlington (but virtual work may be possible from time to time). They are looking for an expert in design, marketing and communications to create publishable communication materials that can be delivered within a negotiable timeframe. They also would like a volunteer experienced in web design to create a new website for this initiative. If offering virtual help, the volunteer should be near the Arlington office for periodic meetings and consultations. Youth 6 Venture is looking for on-site and virtual volunteers for the following positions and programs: 1. “Young Venturer” Connection/Development Specialist: Help with the Young Venturer Fellowship Program and with development projects part or full-time. The qualified volunteer should be enterprising, and fundraising and institutional development experience will be helpful. The time commitment is flexible. This position is located at the Global Office in Arlington, Virginia, easily accessed by the Rosslyn Metro station. Become a Member of a Youth Venture Selection Panel: Youth Venture is seeking judicious adults of any background to join the Youth Venture Selection Panel, the panel to which two to four youth teams present their Venture Action Plan for evaluation. Selection panels occur either live or virtually over the phone, depending on where the venture teams are located. A panelist will receive the venture applications in advance and will be able to question the teams before participating in the final round of decisionmaking with their fellow panelists. The time commitment is approximately 3 hours per panel (one hour for reading the selection booklet and up to 2 hours for the panel participation). Panels are launched throughout the year as teams in the pipeline become ready to present. While some months are busier than others, at least one virtual panel is offered every 2-3 weeks. Live panels occur most frequently in New York, and occasionally in Concord, NH; Leominster, MA; Seattle, WA; and Washington, DC. Participating in a panel will allow a volunteer to get right to the heart of Youth Venture and play an important role in a short amount of time. Become a Member of a YSA Youth Venture Selection Panel: Youth Service America (YSA) awards up to $1000 in start-up funds to young social entrepreneurs who want to create sustainable civic-minded organizations, clubs or businesses that are a lasting asset to the community. YSA Youth Venture teams also host National and Global Youth Service Day events. See more details about YSA at http://www.genv.net/en-us/region/ysa. YSA Youth Venture holds virtual phone panels to choose new YSA participants. YSA panels have preparation and a time commitment similar to the Youth Venture panels. Technical Allies Program: Technical Allies is a program that hosts a series of teleconference workshops where “experts” in particular fields connect with Youth Venture Teams to provide advice on a variety of topics such as marketing, event planning, volunteer recruitment, etc. Workshops are held twice a month over the phone (dates vary) and are one hour in 7 length. Technical Allies can be lawyers, artists, businessmen and women, writers, anyone with acquired skills who is willing to share them with our young people. The TA Program has two components: Special Guests: This program presents an opportunity for Venturers to ask experienced entrepreneurs and venturers questions pertaining to their technical field in a workshop atmosphere. The workshops are one hour (plus prep time), are held over the phone, and are facilities by a Youth Venture staff member. This is an excellent opportunity for Technical Allies with limited time. E-Advisors: E-Advisors are committed to responding to Venturers’ questions via email. Youth Venture staff relay emails from Venturers to Allies in relevant technical fields who can answer their question within 48 hours. This requires a long-term but flexible commitment to Youth Venture. The strength of a TA’s impact is dependent on the level of involvement and dedication. The approximate time commitment is 3-5 hours a month. Changemakers has built the world's first global online "open source" community that competes to surface the best social solutions, and then collaborates to refine, enrich, and implement those solutions. In this way, Changemakers seeds collaborations on a global scale making a major difference in multiple fields. Work would consist of basic word document creations, etc. 2. Create a database for each competition. This would consist of doing online research in specific topic areas, including Disruptive Innovations in Health, Climate Change, and Games for Life, among others. The work would consist of gathering contact information and entering it into the database. 3. Research Fellows working in the competition topic areas and write feature articles on their work for the Changemakers website. This would require excellent writing skills. They are seeking a volunteer well-versed in Drupal to help 8 them simplify their website. They anticipate this taking about 10-15 hours over the course of a few weeks. If interested in helping with either of these projects, please contact Marina Kim at mkim@ashoka.org Volunteer with an Ashoka Fellow Use Web and Graphic Design Skills to Support Women Entrepreneurs in Mexico Virtual Maria Cristina Zepeda Porras (Ashoka Fellow, Mexico) is the founder of SIEMBRA (Integrated Services for Women Entrepreneurs) whose mission is to utilize capacity building strategies to provide Mexican women entrepreneurs with equal development opportunities, fostering their independence and self-sufficiency. She is looking for a junior level Web and Graphic Designer who could spend five hours a week over four months (or longer if desired) working remotely on a variety of projects with a project leader located in Mexico City. The volunteer would help to revitalize the website, create online stores and sell products on Ebay. They would also help to design catalogs of wool rugs, labels, user manuals, newspaper ads and e-banners. The ideal candidate will have experience with different technologies that allow for international sales offering buyer security. They should have knowledge of graphic design using Photoshop, a reliable PC, and hi-speed Internet access. A degree in web or graphic design is a plus. This position is open to North Americans with proficient English and/or Spanish. If interested, please contact SIEMBRA at siembraAC@aol.com Fight Poverty Through Educational Reform Xela, Quetzaltenango, Guatemala Jorge Chojolan (Ashoka Fellow, Guatemala) has plans to create an alternative school system designed to spur educational reforms throughout Guatemala, a country where 65% of the indigenous population is illiterate, and 66% of its children are not in school. Jorge needs help to bring his organization to the next level of professional development so that its model school, the Colegio Miguel Angel Asturias, can be brought to scale. The Colegio Miguel Angel Asturias is a K-12 school providing quality, culturally relevant education to 200 students. He is looking for volunteers to fill the following two positions: Teachers: There are two English Teacher positions available: kindergarten through second grade, and third through sixth grade. Also available are positions for teaching art, drama, dance, and other enrichment classes. These 25 hour/week positions are open until filled; summer positions have been filled. The volunteers should be 9 enthusiastic, love children, have some teaching experience, open to innovative pedagogical methods, and have medium proficiency in Spanish. Grant Writer: This is a 25 hour/week position to raise funds for operations and new programs. The volunteer will work with the development team to identify and cultivate potential supporting foundations and write for and follow through with grants. The volunteer must have excellent written and interpersonal skills, and be proficient in Spanish. Experience in grant writing is a plus. If you are committed to fighting poverty in Guatemala through educational reform, these are outstanding opportunities to work with award-winning project leadership and to see concrete results measured in lives transformed. They offer an experience of Guatemala's rich culture, physical beauty, and social history, as well as language learning opportunities. The Colegio is not able to offer financial support for these positions at this time, but very comfortable living can be had in Xela (including occasional travel) for an average of $400/month. If interested send resume with cover letter stating your time availability, language skills and your particular job interest to colegiomaa@gmail.com Defend Rights of Child Workers Bogota, Colombia and/or Virtual A lawyer by training, Alejandro Martínez Rodriquez (Ashoka Fellow, Colombia) has developed a multifaceted approach to improving the lives of working children and adolescents by empowering them to defend their own rights, including the right to dignified work. He has created a community organization in southwest Bogota called “Small Worker” to defend the rights of adolescent boys and girls and their families. Small Worker has three programs: education for 140 child workers by 12 teachers; solidifying economic initiatives for 70 children with 8 adult administrators; and accompanying groups of 250 child workers with 25 administrators. Small Worker needs volunteer help to help generate resources and create financing strategies. They also need help to create communication products through videos, music, art, use of the Web, etc. Finally, a volunteer could help establish relationships with potential collaborators. Volunteers will be based in Bogota and will receive food and housing at Small Worker or with neighborhood families. If interested, contact Alejandro Martinez at alejandrolarcen@hotmail.com Help Protect Rainforest by Sustainable Mining and Environmental Education Virtual and Medellin, Colombia In the Chocó region of Colombia, small communities on the edge of the rainforest are renting their land to destructive gold-mining groups in order to make enough money to survive. When these groups pull out, they leave the land poisoned and unsuitable for agriculture, putting the people of Chocó in an even worse situation. Catalina Cock Duque (Ashoka Fellow, Colombia) is working with the people of Chocó to take up gold mining themselves, using small-scale environmentally friendly mining techniques. 10 Catalina has created the “Corporación Oro Verde” mining model to promote green gold mining techniques, fair pricing, commercial contacts, and everything else that residents of Chocó need to go into the gold mining business for themselves. Catalina is looking for a volunteer to work virtually (email and skype) with her communications department over six months for one to two hours a week to revise and translate into Spanish the existing literature of her foundation and its programs for specific publications. The volunteer should have excellent communication and language skills. She also is seeking a volunteer who can help adapt standards of environmental education to enable children of the city of Medellin understand the biogeography of Choco, and prepare them to act as environmentally sensitive citizens. This volunteer could help virtually for July and August and then would help local schools conduct workshops with the adapted methodology during September and October in the city of Medellin. If you can help, contact Catalina at catalinacock@gmail.com Redesign Website and Help Raise Funds for Innovative Health Clubhouses Santiago, Chile The Center for the Study of Motor Disorders (CETRAM) was founded by Pedro Chana (Ashoka Fellow, Chile) to promote a treatment model that allows doctors, patients, and patient associations to make clinical decisions by consensus that are in the best interests of a patient’s physical and psychological well being. Through a network of “clubhouses” for those with chronic illnesses like Parkinson’s disease, patients can receive medical attention from a variety of specialists, including neurologists, psychiatrists and occupational therapists. These clubhouses break down the current compartmentalized treatment system and create one where patients (called “members”) and their families can educate themselves about medication and therapy, consult the relevant experts, and ultimately make their own decisions about treatment. Fundraise for Women’s Equality Rio de Janeiro, Brazil or Virtual Amalia Fischer (Ashoka Fellow, Brazil) has pioneered a new avenue for social investment in the women of Brazil through the creation of the Angela Borba Fund (www.angelaborbafundo.org). Unlike company foundations and funding institutions that create and administer their own social programs, the Borba Fund raises its own resources and redirects them to existing, independent programs for gender equality run by women. She is looking for a volunteer to help raise additional funds for distribution. If you can help, contact Amalia at amalia@angelaborbafundo.org 11 Publicity and Fundraising for Brazilian Deaf Community Alagoas, Brazil Irae Cardoso (Ashoka Fellow, Brazil) seeks assistance with strategic planning and resource development for her organization, AAPPE, which works with the deaf and special needs communities in the state of Alagoas, in northeast Brazil. AAPPE offers 110 deaf students education, healthcare, civil rights defense and labor market integration (it has helped 380 deaf people in this field) and handles 9000 consultations a month. Irae is leading an effort to have states in Brazil recognize the hearing impaired as a cultural and linguistic minority with the same rights as other minority groups. AAPPE is a growing organization and plans to expand to the interior area of the state. It needs a volunteer to help review its marketing and organizational development, create long-term strategies that can meet the growing demand for its services, increase the visibility of its work and mobilize adequate resources. The qualified volunteer should be based in Brazil, fluent in Portuguese, and able to work skillfully within the organization´s website developing these new resources. Increase Women’s Role in Turkish Society Istanbul, Turkey and Virtual Sengul Akcar (Ashoka Fellow, Turkey) is increasing women's professional and personal opportunities and broadening the perception of women's role in Turkish society. Her organization, the Foundation for the Support of Women’s Work (FSWW), is a women’s organization supporting 35 local groups which have organized to start social and economic initiatives and increase involvement in local decision making. Capacity building initiatives include early childhood education, product and small business deveopment, micro-credit, gender budgeting, pre and post disaster preparedness, and leadership and organizing. He has founded Janasansadaya, an organization which conducts educational programs, exhibitions and street protests to highlight the need for the protection of human rights. They also work closely with victims and their families, providing legal aid, medical references and psycho-social support. Chitral is looking for a volunteer who can work for one year in Sri Lanka training staff in IT skills, designing a website, formulating a database, and producing an E-newsletter. Use Business Acumen to Support New Crop Economy Guwahati City, Assam, India Pranjal Baruah (Ashoka Fellow, India) established the Mushroom Development Foundation (MDF) to establish a new crop economy for small farmers. MDF helps the unemployed and micro-entrepreneurs to process and market agricultural waste as organic fertilizer which is then used for mushroom cultivation by small farmers. Through his organization, Magic Bus, he is building their confidence and sense of community and teaching them to value teamwork and physical health. Magic Bus works in Mumbai with over 4000 children each year and supports a team of over 100 staff members. Magic Bus has recently received a donation of a new database system to replace its antiquated one. The new system is an open source web-based database for charities and societies. The database can be accessed from all over the world and will combine UK, global and Indian members. They now need a full time person for a 3-4 month period to oversee the migration of the old access based system to the new database, work through the data, contact donors and supporters to update the system and then create a management system for the organization to use the database effectively. The role will then involve teaching staff how to use the system. It will be possible to collaborate with the creators of the new system, who are also based in Mumbai. Hasina is attacking this problem through her “Meghalaya Model,” which has been adopted by government agencies and civil society organizations (CSOs) statewide and is drawing increasing national attention. Her focus is prevention, 18 protection and prosecution through a comprehensive network of police, the legal system, local government, Hasina’s organization, and other CSOs. This network prevents trafficking by keeping watch over an extended database of vulnerable children, prosecutes traffickers, rescues trafficked children, and provides for their rehabilitation. Another focus area is HIV/AIDS intervention, building health awareness and initiatives to ensure the proper provision of health care by the government. Hasina is looking for volunteers who can conduct research, produce posters, pamphlets, a newsletter and other material on trafficking, HIV/AIDS, and human rights. Recently a Bangkok businesswoman was sentenced to seven years in jail for keeping a girl as a slave. This is the first time in Thai legal history that the anti-slavery law has been enforced despite widespread slave-like labor in sweat shops and private households. Congratulations to Siriwan for her part in this landmark, precedent-setting conviction. The Essel Group and Zee Network recently honored Ayyappa Masagi with the Essel Karnataka’s “Best Social Service Award.” Ayyappa is working to improve the economic condition of farmers by helping them take charge of their water resources.
