DCA Application Essays
While there is no absolute word limit, we do not recommend exceeding 500 words for each
answer; long answers are not inherently more impressive. Indeed, you may find yourself able
to sufficiently answer questions with far fewer than 500 words.
For divided questions, you may elect to answer each sub-section separately or answer all
sub-sections with a single, undivided answer. Either way, please ensure that your answer
addresses all parts of the question
Please use whichever format (prose, bullet points, etc.) best conveys your answer to each
question.
1. Why do you want to be a Deputy Chief Adjudicator? What particular qualities and
skills can you bring to the role?
2. Please briefly outline your Debating Experience (with particular emphasis on
debates conducted in the British Parliamentary Format, especially the World
Universities Debating Championships).
3. Please briefly outline your Judging Experience (with particular emphasis on debates
conducted in the British Parliamentary Format, especially the World Universities
Debating Championships).
4. Please briefly outline any relevant experience you have had as a debating coach or
organiser, or other debating involvement not covered in (1) or (2).
5. Name a motion which you have already set (or, alternatively, would like to set) at a
debating tournament, which you feel would be appropriate as a motion at the World
Championships. Why [did you/do you] think it [was/is] a particularly strong choice?
6. Suppose the following motions have been suggested as preliminary round motions
for the World Championships.
Motion A) THB: That employers should be required by the state to offer paternity
leave to fathers.
Motion B) THW: Permit all prisoners the right to vote.
Motion C) THW: Grant Scotland its independence.
Motion D) THB: That common law legal systems are better than civil law legal
systems at protecting property rights.
Motion E) THB: That the Roman Catholic Church should withdraw its ban on
contraception in areas where HIV/AIDS is prevalent.
6.1 Please rank the motions from the one you consider the best choice to the one you
consider the worst choice (1-5, with ‘1’ being the best and ‘5’ being the worst).
6.2 Briefly explain your ranking.
7. Much of your work as an adjudicator will require difficult choices
7.1 How should adjudication teams determine which judges ought to chair, adjudicate
highly-ranked rooms, and advance to the elimination rounds of the
Championships?
7.2 What criteria should members of the adjudication core use in assembling judging
panels, particularly for later preliminary rounds and elimination rounds?
