Rotary Club of the Valley of the Moon Number one Mid size Club in District 5130 6572 Oakmont Drive, Suite A, Santa Rosa, CA 95409 Volume VIII Issue No. 38 John Heilbronner, President June 05, 2009 (www.valleyofthemoonrotary.org) should all remember to do or say “Just for Today”. VISITING ROTARIANS & GUESTS The Four-Way Test of things we think, say or do: Is it the Truth? Is it Fair to all concerned? Will it build Goodwill and better Friendships? Will it be Beneficial to all concerned? OPENING I didn't want to start the bulletin by “stealing” Jerry Dion's favorite word so I will start with a synonym of plethora. Due to the superabundance of guests President John wanted to start the meeting a little early so I felt it was my responsibility to help him get started. As you can see in the picture President John had a plethora of watches to choose from. Al Blake led us in the Pledge to the flag and Jim Spangler read “Just For Today” which is an inspirational piece that reminds us of the many acts and thoughts we With 53 people present President John said it was more of a hurricane than a plethora of guests and asked Sgt-at-Arms, Jerry Dion to introduce our visiting Rotarians, Paula Reinhold and Sharon Kennedy (Fran's daughter) both from Rohnert Park – Cotati. President John introduced Joyce Schipper, Principal of Flowery School and his wife, Carol, our “First Lady”. Sharon Kennedy introduced Fran's “other special daughter” Linda Antonio. Jim Spangler introduced his wife Barbara and Gordon Freedman introduced Nancy Lindzy, Director of Family Services at Daniels Chapel of the Roses Our other guests were introduced during the Scholarship portion of the meeting. ANNOUNCEMENTS President John annouced the Healdsburg club is holding a golf tournament on June 13. Due to their work with the Guatemala Literacy Program Keri Anderson and Ron Nicholson were presented with Guatemala Literacy Fellow Awards. John Derby tried for “He's the Jolly Good Fellow and was ½ way successful. President John tried to tell him a secret board meeting had been held to vote against singing but from the reaction of the crowd (BOOs were heard) sounds like we will continue to sing. Now we only have to hope we get better. Everyone should have received an envelope from John Derby this morning with information on the Raffle Fund Raiser. More info will follow. then presented her with a Paul Harris award in her name and he “Pinned” her. Sharon Kennedy then presented her mother, Francine Dorshkind, with her Paul Harris. Arnie Lamb announced that so far we had received $1200 for Polio Plus as a result of the wonderful Piano & Operatic Recital by Alexey Artemyev, Piano and Evegenia Chaverdova, Mezzo-Soprano. There is still more coming in but this will cover our commitment for next year. A big THANK YOU to Gordon Freedman and his wife, Irene Lucia, for arranging this wonderful event in Oakmont. Membership Chairman Gordon announced Barbara Spangler has submitted her application for membership in our club. Lois Kelly reminded everyone to sign up for the Debunking Dinner scheduled for June 26 at the Quail Inn. It promises to be a fun night for all. PAUL HARRIS AWARDS Rich Irwin explained to our visitors that Paul Harris was the founder of Rotary and Paul Harris awards were established when Paul died in 1957. An award is presented when a person has contributed $1000 to the Paul Harris Foundation and the next $1000 earns a Paul Harris Plus One award. Our President John has earned a Plus One award and First Lady Carol was asked to “Pin” John and then sealed it with a kiss. Much to Carol's surprise and delight President John Rich reminded everyone that funds donated to Rotary International (Paul Harris) do come back to local projects. The $2000 grant for Flowery School was from RI. Joyce Schipper is retiring as the Principal at Flowery and she wanted to stop by and thank all of the members who have volunteered at the school. She will be traveling for most of the next year but we hope she will come back to a meeting when she “settles down”. HAPPY DOLLARS were skipped at this point to make sure we had time for our scholarship recipients. RAFFLE Bill Shaver announced there was $154 up for grabs in the raffle today. Our guest from Flowery School, Nancy, drew Dennis Schroeder's ticket but he drew the King of Diamonds so the pot will continue to grow. President John read the complete list of next year's Board Members and Committees. If you would like more information please go to our club web site: www.valleyofthemoonrotary.org Scholarships Fred Polkinghorn announced we awarded six scholarships for a total of $7,000 this year. We had 40 applications so the committee was thanked and commended for all of their hard work making these six selections. Fred Moore introduced Christine Stephens who received the Vocational Scholarship Award. Christine told us she is a single Mom of 3 boys and she is a Nursing student at SRJC. She thanked the club for their help in achieving her goals. Christine was accompanied by her son Christian. Dan Grow introduced one of the Transfer Scholarship Award winners, Javier Albor. Javier graduated from Windsor High and SRJC with a Criminal Justice Major. He will be attending Sacramento State in the fall. Les Holve presented Transfer Scholarship Award winner Ariana Aparicio from Pt Reyes Station. Ariana told us she graduated from Tomales High and SRJC and plans to attend Sonoma State University with a major in English and an interest in teaching. Brian Adams introduced Deborah Songer from Rincon School. Deborah has just completed classes in Administration and will now spend 33% of her time as Assistant Principal. She thanked the members for all of the work done for and with the students but as an aside she really wanted to know why there is a SHOE on the podium. Les was kind enough to say it had to do with the role our President John played in life so the natural conclusion drawn by Deborah was that President John was a Cross Dresser...... I don't think he is but First Lady Carol is still laughing. Deborah then introduced Tony DiBernardo also a scholarship recipient. Tony told us he just graduated from High School and plans to go to SRJC with a major in Business and possibly Accounting. AHEAD OF SCHEDULE President John said he was informed we were now ahead of schedule (which is strange that he didn't know that – maybe he doesn't even have a watch) but this meant we had a bit of time to discuss the upcoming raffle. President John emphasized how important our fund raising efforts are because the more we earn the more we can give back. All profits from the raffle must be used in California so a successful raffle will go a long way to helping people in our community. The envelopes John Derby handed out this morning contain an informational letter, a sample email type letter, a raffle flyer and a prospect work sheet. Please take the time to read the information and join in our efforts to have a successful fund raiser. Guests and potential Rotarians are invited twice at the Club’s expense. Happy Dollars John Derby had a great time taking his grandson to Oregon Keri Anderson went to Scotland to see her dear friend awarded her PhD and then spent time in Paris and Gordon Freedman recognized his granddaughter who will graduate from High School on Tuesday. President John then tried to explain the Shoe and the Globe !!!
