Earlier issues NE Sports Festival from Feb 14:
Guwahati: The North East Sports Festival will be held in the city from February 14. the meet was
earlier scheduled to begin in the first week of January but was later postponed as the festival date
was clashing with some major tournaments. Meanwhile, Assam Football Association has invited 35
probables to select its women's team for the forthcoming Festival. The probables will attend the
selection camp schedule to begin at Bokakhat from Feb 1.
City lad to play in FIDE tourney:
Guwahati: Rajkumar Shrinjan Singha, an upcoming chess player of the State and a trainee of the
PC Borooah Chess Academy has been selected to play in the National-level Fide rating
championship to be held at Kolkata from January 14. it may be mentioned here that Rajkumar
already has established himself by winning the North East and East Zone Chess Tournament
organized by NIIT on the internet. These win will help the city boy to meet grand master
Viswanathan Anand in a competition to be held at Chennai in the last part of January. Meanwhile,
the PC Barooah Chess Academy will organize a prize money chess competition from January 27 at
the Bhagawati Prasad Barua Bhawan. The meet will be held in two categories- U-11 and U-19.
Amrita, Priti win women's doubles crown:
Guwahati: Abhijit Dutta of Assam beat Jaydip Sarvaiya of Gujarat (15-10/15-1) in a men's single
quarter-finals match in the 4th All India BSNL Badminton Tournament played at Guwahati on Jan 10.
Sudip Bhattacharjee of West Bengal beat Bidha Parida of Orissa (15-11/15-6) in the men's singles
quarter-finals. In the women's semi finals. In the women's semi final Amrita Bhattacharjee of West
Bengal beat Vandana Deogirkiar of MP (11-1/ 11-1). In the other women's singles semi final played
on the day Sumitra Pujari of Assam beat Priti Mitra of West Bengal (11-0/ 11-2) while Sorbajit
Bhowmick of West Bengal outplayed JJ Hati Barua of Assam (15-7/ 17-14) in men's singles quarterfinals. In the women's doubles Amrita Chatterjee and Priti Mitra of West Bengal lifted the title beating
Sumitra Pujari and Sanjukta Gogoi(15-1/ 15-3) in the final played on Jan 10.
Jharkhand take crucial lead in U-22 cricket:
Guwahati: A 55-run partnership for the last wicket between Kundan Kumar and Manoj Kumar Singh
helped Jharkhand earn a valuable 13 run lead in the first innings against Assam in the ongoing U-22
East Zone Cricket Tournament, being played at Jorhat. A fine spell from Palashjyoti Das, who
claimed five wickets, almost confirmed Assam's first innings lead when the visitors were reeling at
153 run for nine in the first innings.
Second fencing camp for Games begin:
Guwahati: The second-phase camp of the State fencing team for the forthcoming National Games,
started on Feb 3 at the city SAI complex. Altogether 40 fencers are taking part in the camp. During
the inaugural function, the Assam Fencing Association felicitated five State fencers- Laxmi Devi,
Kavita Devi, Linda Chanu, Ranjit Singh and coach Biswajit Meiti. It may be mentioned here that all
four archers had performed creditably in the recently concluded National Archery championships.
Guwahati: register thumping win, in final:
Guwahati: Guwahati entered into the final of the Senior Nuruddin Ahmed Inter-district Cricket
Tournament defeating Nagaon by seven wickets at Nagaon on Feb 3. Chasing a victory target of 70
runs, Guwahati reached home losing just three wickets.
Satish in East Zone squad:
Guwahati: Middle-order batsman Rajagopal Satish has been selected to represent East Zone in the
Duleep Trophy Cricket Tournament. The team for the meet was selected on Feb 3. Satish is the lone
face from Assam in the squad. It may be mentioned here that Satish had performed consistently with
the bat in the Ranji Trophy. He even scored a double ton against his home State Tamil Nadu.
Zonal football camps for Games deferred:
Guwahati: Assam Football Association has deferred the zonal camps, scheduled from the last week
of January, in Games since the State footballer will be busy in different engagements, according to
AFA secretary Ankur Dutta. The zonal camp will now be after the North East Sports Festival. The
State junior footballers will be busy from February 1 for the National Junior Football Tournament,
scheduled to be held at Aizawl. Immediately after this tournament, the North East Sports Festival will
get under way in the city and our footballers will be busy in this tournament. Keeping all these in
mind, we have decided to defer the zonal camp and it will now begin from after the completion of the
North East Sports Festival", he said.
Gala opening ceremony on the cards:
Guwahati: A grand opening ceremony is on the cards in the forthcoming North East Sports Festival
to be held on Feb 14. There will be variety of programmes to mark the inaugural function. Chief
Minister Tarun Gogoi will inaugurate the meet where some other ministers from the neighbouring
States will also be present. The meet, organized by the State Sports Council, will be held in ten
disciplines where all eight States from the region, including Sikkim will take part. More than one
thousand athletes are expressed to take part in the four-day meet.
Assam taje lead, Orissa strike back:
Guwahati: The CK Nayudu U-22 cricket match between Assam and Orissa is evently poised at the
end of the second day. Assam, despite taking a lead of 27 runs in the first innings were struggling at
53 for four in the second innings when stumps were drawn at Jorhat on Feb 10. On Feb 9, Assam
were bowled out for 185 runs in their first innings.
Jones knocked out:
Guwahati: Third seeded Likita Devraj, fourth seeded YP Aishwarya and eight seeded Soniya Dayal
have made it to the semi final of the OIL-AITA Super Series Tennis Championships being played at
the NETF Courts here in Dispur. Likita brushed aside the challenge of V Archana 6-0 6-1 in a lopsided quarter-final tie while Y P Aishwarya had another easy win over Gopika Kapoor 6-2 6-1 en
route her way to the last four. However, in a major upset, Dayal Knocked out second seeded
Daniellie Jones in a tough three-setter 3-6 6-4 7-6 (7-4). The quarter-final will be played between top
seeded G Janaki Rao and M Divija, the seventh seed. None of the seeded players had any
problems in their pre-quarter final matches.
Six-a-side cricket concludes:
Guwahati: The third Pibeo Hero Honda six-a-side corporate cricket tournament was held recently in
the city. Altogether, 16 teams took part in the tournament the title was claimed by Hotel Landmark
Yellow Table who defeated Tata AIG by 91 runs. Rabi Das of the winning side bagged the man of
the match and man of the tournament awards.
All Assam Kung Fu from Jan 28:
Guwahati: The sixth All Assam Prize Money Kung Fu Championship will get under way at the
Amingaon Railway Ground from January 28. Three-day meet is being organized by the Amingaon
Dragon Kung Fu Academy under the banner of All Assam Dragon Kung-Fu Association. The
president of the organizing committee Dr B K Dev Mishra on Jan 23 said that around 250 players
from different district of the State will take part in the meet. The organizers have decided that the all
participants will get cash awards. The event will be held in nine different categories for women.
Rain disrupts Bud-New Star clash:
Guwahati: Unseasonal rain interrupted the match between Bud Cricket Club and New Star Club in
the Jugal Kishore Newatia Memorial Cricket Tournament, forcing the organizers to stop the match
after the ninth over in the New Star Club innings. The remaining portion of the match will be held on
Jan 24. Earlier, batting first, Bud Cricket Club piled up a formidable total of 262 runs for four wickets
in their stipulated 40 overs.
Ticket price for Indo-Pak U-19 matches fixed:
Guwahati: The price for the forthcoming one-day match between the U-19 India and Pakistan team
has been fixed by the Assam Cricket Association, in its governing body meeting, which was held in
the city on Jan 23. The secretary of Assam Cricket Association Bikash Baruah said that three types
of tickets will be available and the price fixed are: Rs 10.20 and 30. It may be mentioned here that
both the sides will clash each twice in Guwahati in limited overs matches on Feb 11 and 12.
Assam U-17 in semis of national cricket:
Guwahati: Assam reached the semi final of the U-17 National Cricket Championship defeating
Hyderabad by virtue of their first innings lead at Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh. Assam made
210 in their first innings and later bowled out Hyderabad for 165 runs. Assam was 70 for three when
the match was called off Jan 22 due to bad weather.
Ten disciplines in NE Sports Festival:
Guwahati: There will be ten disciplines in the next edition of the North East Sports Festival which will
get under way in the city on Feb 14. More than 1,200 participants from the eight north-eastern
States are expected to attend the four-day meet, which is considered as the dress rehearsal of the
National Games. An official source said that eight out of ten disciplines will be common to male and
female athletes. These are football, archery, athletics, badminton, table tennis, taekwondo, judo and
karate. Boxing and handball will be organized only in the women's category. It may be mentioned
here that weightlifting and hockey were earlier included in the Festival but both the events have now
been dropped.
GCCC in semis of Bud cricket tourney:
Guwahati: GCCC entered into the semi final of the ongoing Jugal Kishore Neotia Bud Cricket
Tournament defeating Ankurjyoti in a one-sided match by 68 runs in the Nehru Stadium here on Jan
21. batting first, GCCC rode on a fine half century from Bitop Mahanta (77 n.o.) helped GCCC pile
up a fighting total of 223 runs for six wickets in their stipulated 40 overs.
Priyanuj, Rupam in title clash in India Club tennis:
Guwahati: Priyanuj Lahakar will meet Rupam Bora in the title clash of the men's events in the
ongoing India Club Open Tennis Championship at the India Club courts. In the semi final, Priyanuj
thrashed Tutu Thapa 6-1, 6-0 while Rupam beat Parnoi Das in straight set 6-4, 6-3. In the mixed
doubles, Anupam Chowdhury and Manjula Baruah defeating Diganta Thakur and Bonita Dutta 6-2.
The line-up for the veterans doubles above 55 years also finalized on Jan 21.
Tengapukhuri advance in Assam Club soccer:
Guwahati: Tengapukhuri Club of Nazira entered into the next round of the ninth Assam Club
Championship, defeating Harisinga Krira Elevan via a tie-breaker 5-3, being played at the
Gossaigaon College Ground, on Jan 18. The match was tied 1-1 in the schedule time. It was
Harisinga who went into the lead through Sanjib Kumar. Parimal Borgohain scored the equilizer for
Tengpukhuri. Earlier, United Club of Sadiya got a walkover against Charaideo's Assam Jyoti club as
the side didn't turn up to play its first round match.
No major upset on Day Two in India Club tennis:
Guwahati: The India Club Open tennis Championship entered into the second day on Jan 18 without
any major upset. All the top-ranked player moved into the next round.
Bud Challenger Cup from Jan 20:
Guwahati: Shantipur AC will take on Guwahati Town Club in the inaugural match of the third All
Assam Invitational Bud Challenge Cup Cricket meet, in memory of Jugal Kishore Newatia, schedule
to begin on Jan 20. The limited overs tournament will be held at the Nehru Stadium.
HKV finish runners-up in national CBSE TT:
Guwahati: Hindusthani Kendriya Vidyalaya of Guwahati bagged the runners-up trophy in the
recently-concluded CBSE National Table Tennis Tournament held at Jaipur. The Guwahati team
comprising Gauri Shankar Batsallya, Raja Prabhakar Chanda and Touseef Hussain defeated teams
of Riyadh, Indore and Jalandhar on their way to the final. In the final, however, the side lost to PSPB
Mayo School of Ajmer 3-0. Earlier the side emerged champion in the North-east Zonal championship
of the Hindustani Kendriya Vidyalayas.
Kung-fu championship from Jan 28:
Guwahati: The All Assam Prize Money Kung-fu Championship will be held at Amingaon Railway
Ground from January 28. The three-day meet, organized by the Amingaon Dragon Kung-fu
Academy, will be concluded on January 30.
Assam Club Football from Jan 17:
Guwahati: Salbagan SC will take on Mudaibari Jawglary Club of Mangaldoi in the inaugural match of
the ninth Assam Club Championship will get under way at Gossaigaon from Jan 17. Altogether
eighteen teams are taking part in the championship, including defending champion OIL India Limited
and runners-up Assam state Electricity Board. The president of the Assam Football Association
Hemendra Bramha informed that the matches of the tournament will be held in the Gossaigaon
College Ground and the preparation for the meet have been completed. He also have been
completed. He also added that the meet will be inaugurated by BTAD chief Hagrama Mohilary.
Silchar take on NF Rly on Jan 17 in Inter district cricket:
Guwahati: Silchar will take on NF Railway in the quarter-final match of the Nuruddin Inter-District
Cricket Tournament from Jan 17. The match is being hosted by Silchar at the Satindra Mohan Dev
Stadium. NF Railway will be fielding a near 'B' team as their request to the ACA for a possible
postponement of the match was rejected by the ACA.
Women's hockey camp at Ghoramari from Jan 30:
Guwahati: The Assam Women's Hockey Association (AWHA) has selected 58 players for the
selected 58 players for the second phase camp of the National Games to be held at Ghoramari from
Jan 30. The secretary of the AWHA Snigdha Daimary said that the State team for the forthcoming
North East Sports Festival will be selected from the probables of this camp.
India Club tennis begins on Jan 17:
Guwahati: The Eighth India Club Open Tennis Championship, organized by India Club, will begin on
Jan 17 at the club courts. Former sportsman and veteran sports organizer Pulin Das will inaugurate
the meet, where around 200 players will be seen in action in 10 different categories.
Hatibarua, Pujari advance in BSNL badminton:
Guwahati: JJ Hatibarua and Sumatra Pujari kept Assam BSNL's flag flying in the 4 th All India BSNL
Badminton Tournament currently in progress here in Guwahati. Hatibarua was in delicate touch
when he outclassed Pawan Kumar of MTNL, Delhi 15-1, 15-7. Hatibarua was joined in the last eight
by S Bhowmick of West Bengal who defeated C Satpathy of Orissa 15-10, 15-4 in another last 16
tie. Milan Parekh of Gujarat and Anup Mehrotra of UP(east) have also advanced in to the last eight.
Meanwhile, Sumitra Pujari was in roaring from against her MTNL (Delhi) opponent Phulwati brushing
aside her challenged at the expense of just one game winning 11-0, 11-1 her quarter-final match.
Sumitra was joined in the last four by Preeti Mitra and Gautam Chatterjee of West Bengal and B R
Patel of Chandigarh.
Kamrup dominate boxing meet:
Guwahati: Raju Tamang of Kamrup bagged the gold medal in the 48kg category of the 32 nd All
Assam Invitational Boxing Championship which concluded at the Ulubari Boxing Club premises on
Jan 9. Raju beat Bhumidhar Narzary of Chirang to won the gold. Kamrup were leading the medals
tally, when results last came in, collecting 13 medals. Kamrup were the favourities to top the table
before the start of the tournament and they lived up to their expectations. It may be mentioned here
that around 100 participants from 13 districts took part in the championship organized by the Ulubari
Boxing Club.
State tennis team for School Games named:
Guwahati: Anurag Barooah and Anirban Hazarika of North-east Tennis Foundation have been
selected to represent Assam in the National School Games to be held at Pune from December 13 to
17. the State team consist of Anurag Barooah, Parnai Das, Rekibul Hussain Sudhanta Mohanti in
the boys 14 year event. In the boys 17 year event, Abhinab Sharma, Kaushik Das, Anirban Hazarika
and Bhargav Saikia are part of the team, while in the girls 17 year category, Parna Das and Kasturi
Verma will represent the State.
Children Rock Climbing training:
Guwahati: The Assam Mountaineering Association, the pioneer organization in the field of
mountaineering and other adventurous sports, is going to hold its annual children rock climbing-cumorientation course specially for children between 5 to 12 years of age at Guwahati. The Association
has successfully completed 14 such rock climbing courses for children at Guwahati in the past and
has already rendered mountaineering training to over 900 children. The Association have also
successfully completed high attitude trekking to famous Sandakphu (12,000 ft) in the Darjeeling
Himalayas. This year the programme will be held from December 18, 19 and 26 at Guwahati and
after completion of the programme, a batch of 15 children will be selected for high attitude trekking
outside Assam.
Badani eying national squad return:
Guwahati: Tamil Nadu ready to take Assam in the Ranji Trophy tie which will start at the Nehru
Stadium from Dec 4. The side, lead by Hemang Badani have several former national cricketers
including Sadagopan Ramesh and S Sriram. Tamil Nadu is already well placed in the Pool B of the
Elite Group taking the second spot in the points tally with seven points from two matches.
Meanwhile, Badani eyeing a promising return to the national team. The Tamil Nadu skipper
expressed this during the interaction with pressperson. He also mentioned that his age will permit
him to continue international cricket for next couple of years.
Assam beat Tripura in U-17 VM Trophy:
Guwahati: Assam registered a 37-run win against Tripura in U-17 VM Trophy Cricket Tournament
which concluded on Dec 3 at Silchar. Chasing a victory of 132 Tripura bundled out for 94. Assam
captain Swarupam Purkayastha once again dazzled with the ball and claimed three wickets while
Pritam Das and Shiv Shankar Roy bagged two wickets each. It may be mentioned here that it was
Assam's second consecutive win in a tournament. Assam will now visit match in the tournament
against Orissa.
Chess championship from Jan 27:
Guwahati: A prize money chess championship will be organized by the P C Borooah Chess
Academy from January 27. the competition will be held in two categories- U-19 and 11.
Eastern India bodybuilding on Nov 30:
Guwahati: The sixth Eastern India Bodybuilding Championship will be held in the city on Nov 30.
The tournament, organized by the Association of Body Builders, Kamrup will be held in the District
Library auditorium. Top bodybuilders from the region are expected to take part in the competition.
Boxing selection-cum-coaching camp from Dec 2:
Guwahati: The selection-cum-preparation camp of the Assam team for the 53rd National Women
Boxing Championship will be held at the Guwahati SAI Complex from December 2 to 20. the
national championship will be held at Kulam, Kerala from December 26 to 30. the Assam Amateur
Boxing Association has requested the following players to participate in the selection-cum-coaching
camp.
Assam struggling against Bengal in Polly Umrigar Trophy:
Guwahati: Bengal is in driver's seat and chasing a probable victory as they have put hosts Assam on
the mat in the under 15 Polly Umrigar Trophy reducing them 42 for four after talking a crucial first
innings lead of 80 runs. Assam still need 38 runs to avoid innings defeat. In the morning on Nov 29
Bengal folded their innings at 202 in reply to Assam's 122.
UP on verge of win against Assam:
Guwahati: Uttar Pradesh, after conceding first innings lead, almost turned the table in favour of the
hosts, as they need just 83 runs to defeat Assam in the Ranji Trophy tie being played at Kanpur on
Nov 26. The hosts have still nine wickets in their hand to score the remaining runs and they will get
another two full days.
Triangular contest on the cards for AFA secretary post:
Guwahati: A triangular contest is on the cards for the post of Assam Football Association secretary
at the Annual General Meeting of the Body which is scheduled to be be held at Kokrajhar on Nov 28
and if require the election for the above mentioned post will be held in the same day. For the
president post, MLA Hemen Brahma is likely to face AFA vice-president Dr Motilal Nunisha. It was
sure that current secretary of the AFA Keder Mour will seek another term for the same post. This
time he will face the challenge from another vice president of the association Ankur Dutta and former
secretary of the Assam Olympic Association Munin Nobis.
24 State veteran athletes in national squad:
Guwahati: 24 veteran athletes from the State have been included in the Indian team which will take
part in the 13th Veteran Athletics Asiad to be held at Bangkok from December 1.
Guwahati may enter car racing map:
Guwahati: Guwahati will soon enter into the map of car racing as the Federation of Motor Sports
Club of India is seriously considering to organize a national-level tournament in the city in near
future. The president of the association Vicky Chandhok admitted that in this regard, preparation has
started and if everything goes according to plan, then just after the monsoons next year. Chandhok
is in the city take part in the India-ASEAN car rally which will be flagged off from the city on Nov 23.
Punjab beat Assam by an innings and 51-run:
Guwahati: Punjab faced no resistance from Assam as they carved an innings and 51-run victory on
the fourth morning of their Elite Group B second-round match in the Ranji Trophy at the Gandhi
Ground in Amritsar on Nov 19. Following on, the visitors second innings was terminated for 158 in
65 overs, with the addition of 12 runs to their overnight total of 146 for 7. Hosts garnered five full
points for the outright win.
Diganta claims singles title:
Guwahati: Diganta Buragohain of Janambhumi claimed the singles title of the Arabindo Buragohain
Inter-media Badminton Championship defeating Rajib Kalita in the final played at the Kanaklata
Indoor Stadium on Nov 19. Teams title was claimed by Pratidin. In the open event final between
Diganta and Rajiv was well contested. Diganta won the first game 15-9 but Rajiv bounced back
strongly and won the second the game by 15-11. however, Diganta hold his nerve in the third game
and won the game by 15-9. in the team events final Pratidin defeated Doordarshan 2-1. in the
closing function the editor of the Dainik Assam, Dhirendra Nath Chakraborty was the chief guest.
Assam on backfoot against Punjab:
Guwahati: Assam were on the backfoot after the second day's play in the Ranji Trophy tie against
Punjab at Amritsar on Nov 17. Assam were 113 for three chasing Punjab's first innings total of 422
all out, at the Gandhi Sports Complex Ground. Skipper Zakaria Zuffri was batting on 41 while RK
Mritunjoy Gohain was unbeaten on zero at the other end.
Keen contest on the cards for AFA secretary post:
Guwahati: A keen contest in on the cards for the post of general secretary of the Assam Football
Association as two candidates are in the fray for the post, election to which will be held at the
general meeting of the body on November 28 at Kokrajhar. AFA general secretary Kedar Mour will
seek another term on Wednesday while vice president of the association Ankur Dutta has also
announced his candidature for the post.
Kickboxing team from Pune nationals on Nov 29:
Guwahati: The Assam Kickboxing Association (AKA) will organize a selection camp to prepare the
Assam team for the 14th National Kickboxing championship which is scheduled to be held from
December 18 at Pune. The selection camp will be held at the Karate-Do office at Bharalumukh on
November 29.
Indian golf stars to play in Digboi meet:
Guwahati: The five day India Oil servo Masters Golf will begin at Digboi Golf Link from November
23. The event, the eight of the 2004-05 season, is on the Amby Valley PGAI Tour and is the only
professional golfing event in the North-east, will tee of with the proam on November 23 while the
main four-day competition is scheduled from November 24.
Nagaon in command in R G Baruah final:
Guwahati: Nagaon were in the driving seat in the final of the RG Barua Cricket Tournament when
they piled up 319 for seven at the end of the first day's play against Railway at Mangaldoi. Sudipta
Rajak made 89 while Harsha Jain scored 86 for Nagaon. Joy Banik and Tanmoy Day claimed three
wickets each for the Railway side.
Assam take vital lead in Polly Umrigar cricket:
Guwahati: Assam took a vital 58 runs first inning lead against Jharkhand in the Polly Umrigar cricket
tournament as the visitor were bowled out for 262 in their first innings on Wednesday. In the second
innings, hosts Jharkhand scored 203 for one at the end of the day's play.
Punjab in command:
Guwahati: Punjab have placed themselves in the driver's seat at the end of the first day's play in
their Ranji Trophy match versus Assam by rattling up 297 runs for the loss of three wickets when
stumps were drawn at the Gandhi Sports Complex Ground in Amritsar on Nov 16. Opener R S
Rickey scored a well composed century to place his side in a commanding position.
Jahnabi in Indian team for Taiwan boxing meet:
Guwahati: Assam Boxer Jahnabi Gogoi has been included in the Indian team which will take part in
an international boxing tournament to be held at Taiwan from November 26. India will send a five
member team in the tournament in the where Jahnabi will be the lone face from Assam. The other
members of the squad are Mandakan Chanu, Ibomcha Devi, Lekhake and Kamaljit Kaur.
Assam team for junior weightlifting named:
Guwahati: Assam announced a seven members squad for the 18 th All India Open Junior Women's
Weightlifting Championship to be held at Lucknow from December 18. the secretary of the Assam
Weightlifting Association Bhabajyoti Goswami said that Khalil Ali will accompany the team as coach.
The squad: Minu Gogoi, Mrinalini Saikia, Minti Gogoi, Junumoni Barua, Rinjumoni Gogoi, Archana
Boro and Ranjumani Gogoi.
Children Peace Run on Nov 14:
Guwahati: To commemorate Children's Day, i.e. the birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, a
children's peace run has been organized by the City SAI Centre from Paltan Bazar to Nehru Stadium
on Nov 14. Around one thousand children will run in the peace run. The peace run will begin at 8
p.m.
Kamrup dist veterans' athletics on Nov 21:
Guwahati: The Kamrup District Veteran's Amateur Athletics Championships will be held at Guwahati
University play ground on November 21. The selection of the Kamrup district veterans amateur
athletics team of women over 35-years and men of 40-years and above for the 13th All Assam
Veterans' Athletics Championships to be held at Silapathar from December 22 will be made in the
championships.
AOA unhappy over coaching camps:
Guwahati: The Assam Olympic Association has declared its unhappiness over the way the State
team is preparing to take on the challenges of other States for the National Games slated to be held
in November 2005. Sources in the AOA have hinted that a new committee is likely to be set up soon
to oversee the preparation of different associations.
Trial camp for U-21 soccer from on Nov 10:
Guwahati: A trial-cum-selection camp to select Guwahati team for the U-21 Inter-district soccer will
be held at the SAI complex from Nov 10. The football secretary of the GSA Hem Das said that
interested players may join the camp with age-proof certificate.
Pradip Hazarika survives car crash:
Guwahati: Sports organizer and the secretary of the Nagaon Sports Association Pradip Hazarika
and two others were seriously injured when their car, in which they were traveling, meet with an
accident near Sonapur. All the injured person have been admitted to the Guwahati Medical College
Hospital.
All Assam Women Weightlifting Championship from Nov 7:
Guwahati: Second all Assam Open Prize Money Women Weightlifting championship will be held in
the city SAI Complex on November 7. Around 60 participants from different districts will take part in
the championship from where the State squad for the All India Open Weightlifting Championship will
be selected.
Janambhumi, Doordarshan and Pratidin in semis:
Guwahati: Janambhumi, Doordarshan and Pratidin entered into the semi final of the H N Baruah
Inter-media Football Championship being played at the SAI Sports complex in the city on Nov 4.
Janambhumi defeated Natun Dainik 2-1, while Doordarshan outplayed Amar Asom via sudden
death 7-6 and in the last match of the day Pratidin beat Aji 4-0. now Doordarshan will meet Pratidin
while Assam Tribune will meet Janambhumi in the semi finals to be played on Nov 6.
AAFPa criticizes Bikash Baruah's recent comment:
Guwahati: The All Assam Football Players' Association (AAFPA) criticized Assam Cricket
Association secretary Bikash Baruah for his recent damage of the cricket pitch at Nehru Stadium
which will be used in the forthcoming Ranji Trophy tie. The association warned Baruah to desist from
making this type of comments.
Assam Tribune, Aji win inaugural ties in media soccer:
Guwahati: Assam Tribune and Aji entered into the next round of the HN Baruah Inter-media Football
Tournament which got underway at the city SAI Complex on Wednesday. Assam Tribune defeated
The Sentinel 3-2 in a hard fought contest to earn a semi final berth. In the other match of the day, Aji
beat Janasadharan 3-0 to qualify for the quarter-final.
Bokakhat in last four in eves' soccer:
Guwahati: Bokakhat entered into the semifinal of the Inter-district Women's Football Tournament
defeating Dibrugarh 3-1 at Bhergaon. The match ended goalless after the schedule time as well as
extra time. However, Bokakhat had the last laugh in the penalty shoot-out.
New body of Assam Boat Racing & Rowing Association formed:
Guwahati: The new executive body of the Assam Boat Racing & rowing Association has been
formed at the annual General Meeting held at the Circuit House, Guwahati on Oct 31. Following are

Golden double for UP in National Netball:
Guwahati: It was a golden double for Uttar Pradesh when they lifted both the boys and girls title in
the 18th Junior National Netball Championship defeating Delhi in both the section at the Veterinary
Ground in Guwahati on Oct 31. The boy's final was a well contested on as Uttar Pradesh had to
pass through some tensed moment before they finally overcame the challenge of Delhi. Uttar
Pradesh won the match 24-21. however, the girl's final was a one-sided affair as Uttar Pradesh
easily defeated Delhi 17-8. it may be mentioned here that Assam lost in the semi final in the boy's
section to Delhi 13-18. sericulture Minister Hemo Prova Saikia was the chief guest in the closing
function.
Pradip Bhuyan wins Guwahati chess:
Guwahati: Pradip Bhuyan emerged as the champion in the Guwahati Chess Championship which
concluded at the Manipuri Basti School on Oct 31. Pradip collected 6.5 points on his way to grab the
top position. Shashi Rajknowar (6) finished the tournament in the second place followed by K H
Bipin Singh (6), Pranab Kumar Nath (5) and Diwjamoni Singh (5) respectively. There were two
prizes for the youngest participants which were bagged by Adarsha Bordoloi and Natasha Dutta.
Pulin Das turns 87 on Nov 1:
Guwahati: Pulin Das, seniormost sportsman, sports organizer and sports journalist is 87 year old on
Nov 1. he continues to play two sets of tennis everyday even at this age. However, since India Club,
where he plays tennis, remains closed on Mondays, Mr Das will celebrate his birthday at home with
his family and friends.
Assam boys in last 8, girls in a must win situation in Netball Nationals:
Guwahati: Assam boys have entered the quarter-final of the 18th Junior National Netball
Championship which is currently in progress in the city. Assam defeated Orissa 21-14 on Oct 29 to
earn a last eight berth. Apart from Assam, Delhi, Chandigarh and Haryana have also reached the
last eight stage. Meanwhile in the girls section, Assam is in a must win situation against Haryana for
a spot in the last eight. The match is schedule to be held on Oct 30.
Cooper Test for soccer referees on Nov 21:
Guwahati: The Annual Cooper test for the Provisional Grade II and III football referees will be held at
the city SAI complex on November 21. All referees concerned have been asked to report to the
secretary of the Guwahati Referee Association Bipin Deka by November 19.
Muay Thai Nationals in city from Dec 25:
Guwahati: The Fifth Muay Thai National Championship, a competition of different types of martial
arts like karate, kung fu, kick boxing, taekwando, will be held in the city from December 25. the
tournament, organized by the Muay Thai Association of Assam, will be held in two categories-junior
and senior. It is worth mentioning here that the probables for the national team for the first Indoor
Asian Games to be held in Bangkok will be picked in the tournament. The tournament will also serve
as selection trial for the World Muay Thai Championships to be held in March 2005.
Mix day for Assam:
Guwahati: It was a mixed day for Assam in the 18th Junior National Netball Championship which is
currently in progress at the Veterinary College Playground in the city. The boys teams won their first
match in the tournament while girls team registered a win against Andhra Pradesh but lost to
Karnataka in the other match of the day. In the boys section there was a tough fight between Assam
and Manipur but the host overcame the challenge by 25-14. Meanwhile, in the girls section Assam
thrashed Andhra Pradesh in a one sided match 34-3. The State girls fight well in the second match
too but lost to Karnataka by a single point (15-16).
Selection camp of swimming team:
Guwahati: The selection-cum-trial camp of Assam swimming team for the age group U-14, U-17,
and U-19 will be held in the Bimala Prasad Chaliha Swimming pool in the city on Oct 30 and 31. The
interested swimmers should report in the Bimala Prasad Chaliha Swimming Pool on Oct 29 with age
proof certificate. It may be mentioned here that the selected swimmers will take part in the National
School Games Swimming Championship to be held at Sirsa of Haryana from November 4.
Inter-district soccer from on Oct 29:
Guwahati: The Women's Inter-district Football Championship will start on Oct 29 at Vergaon near
Mangaldoi. Altogether 10 teams are likely to take part in the tournament. Tezpur will meet Mangaldoi
in the inaugural match of the tournament on Oct 29.
No flood-lit matches in Bordoloi Trophy:
Guwahati: GSA has put off plans to organize the semifinals and the final of the 53 rd Bordoloi Trophy
Football Tournament under flood light due to major damage to the cable of the light tower, which
made the affected tower redundant. Now, the first semi final on Oct 13 between Brothers Union of
Dhaka and Assam Police Blues will be played in day light. The match will now begin at 2-15 p.m.
The GSA came to the decision following a routine check by ASEB which showed that several wires
leading to the particular tower were uprooted during construction work related to the proposed
indoor-stadium for the forthcoming National Games. A former top official of ASEB and the former
president of GSA Jatin Bora said that the condition of the wire was bad that it was impossible to
switch on the light. When the ASEB officials went for a testing, a major disaster was averted at the
last minute which sounded death-knell for flood-lit matches in the tournament for this edition.
Inter-dist school athletics postponed:
Guwahati: The Inter-District School Athletic Championship, scheduled earlier to be held at Nagaon
from October 29, has been postponed and it will now be held at the same venue from November 5.
The championships will have several disciplines in the boys and girls event. The tournament will be
held in the U-14 and U-17 categories.
Four-member team to take part in U-11 Nat chess:
Guwahati: A four-member team from the PC Barooah chess Academy will take part in the U-11
National Children Chess Championship to be held in Delhi from Oct 14. Kh Jintu Singha, Debashish
Dutta and Shahbaz Karim will participate in the boys section while R Nivetha will join in the girls
section. Internationally rated player Th Bipin Singha will accompany the team as coach.
AFA AGM on Oct 31:
Guwahati: The annual general meeting of Assam Football Association has been rescheduled. It will
now be held on October 31 at Kokrajhar. The secretary of the Assam Football Association Kedar
Mour said that apart from the selection of the new office-bearers of the Association, some more
issues will be discussed in the meeting.
Guwahati chess championships from Oct 25:
Guwahati: Guwahati Chess Association will organize the Guwahati Chess Championship (Open)
from Oct 25. the meet will be held at the Manipuri Basti High School premises. The Guwahati team
for the All Assam Chess Championship, scheduled to be held at Dibrugarh in December, will be
selected from this meet.
ARC out; AP Blues, Shillong XI advance in Bordoloi Trophy:
Guwahati: Last year champion Assam Regimental Centre bowed out of the Bordoloi Trophy Football
Tournament losing its quarter-final match against Assam Police Blues in a sudden death 5-6 at
Mirza on Oct 10. In the other match of the day, held at the Nehru Stadium, Shillong XI sailed into the
quarter-final defeating SAIL 7-6 also in the sudden death. Although, both the match were schedule
to be held at the Nehru Stadium, but in a eleventh hour decision, the organizers shifted the first
quarter final match between Assam Police Blues and Assam Regimental Centre to Mirza. The match
was well contested as suggested by the score line. At the end of the schedule time, when the match
ended at 2-2, the referee had to go for the penalty shootout to break the deadlock. The team were
tied at 5-5 at the end of the tie breaker. In the sudden death the Blues got the better of the defending
champion and became the first team to enter the semi final. On Oct 12, Brothers Union will play
against NFRSC while ASEB will meet OIL in the other match of the day. Both the matches will be
played at the Nehru Stadium.
NOC to Powar: ACA seeks time from BCCI:
Guwahati: The Assam Cricket Association has sought time from the BCCI for replacing middle order
batsmen Kiran Powar. Once the BCCI okays ACA wish that the latter will give an NOC to Powar to
play for Baroda. The secretary of ACA Bikash Barua on Oct 10 said that Kiran had sought an NOC
at the last moment while the ACA had already placed his name in the Assam list submitted to BCCI.
Kiran's sudden decision to shift sides have put us in deep trouble and that is why we have sought
the time from the BCCI", said Baruah. Meanwhile, the camp for the Ranji Trophy probable are
attending the camp, supervised by Nanavati. Another outstation coach Abdul Jabbar has also
arrived in the city to take charge of the U-19 State squad.
Assam Netball body meet on Oct 17:
Guwahati: A meeting of the Assam Netball Association will be held on October 17 in its office at
Dispur. The secretary of the association Simanta Baruah said that some important issues including
the recent attack on the players at Bihar will be discussed in the meeting.
Mikir wins club bodybuilding title:
Guwahati: Ranjit Mikir won the champion of the champion title in the fourth All Guwahati Inter Club
Body Building Championship which was held in the city recently. Hiranya Kalita bagged the runnersup Trophy while Sashanka Buragohain was adjudged as the best exposer of the meet. The other
champions in different categories were: Up to 50kg: Prafulla Lalung, Up to 55kg: Sanjeev Sonowal,
Up to 60kg: Sashanka Buragohain, Up to 65kg: Abani Dutta, Up to 70kg: Juel Ekka, Up to 75kg:
Hiranya Kalita and above 75kg: Ranjit Mikir.
Jamson, Dipti win all Assam marathon:
Guwahati: K Jamson Singh of Guwahati won the men's title in the third All Assam Open Debabrata
Banerjee and Junumoni Saikia Prize Money Marathon which was held in city on Oct 7. The women's
and boy's titles went to Dipti Chutia of Golaghat and Moinul Haq of Barpeta respectively. The race
was flagged off on Oct 10 by the CPO of the NF Railway SMN Islam.
Don Bosco Aquatic Championship:
Guwahati: The seventh annual Don Bosco Aquatic Championship, organized by the Don Bosco
Swimmers Parents' Associations, was held at the Bimla Prasad Swimming Pool on Oct 7. Monjyoti
Rabha, Gaurav Choudhury, Juber Hussain Reza, Bhargav Kumar Dutta and Mrinmoy Neog
emerged champions in different categories in the championships.
ASEB, NFRSC, SAIL advance in Bordoloi Trophy:
Guwahati: ASEB, NFRSC and SAIL advanced to the next round of the Bordoloi Trophy Football
Championship which is currently in progress at Guwahati and Mirza simultaneously. ASEB defeated
FCI 5-4 in a tie breaker, NF Railway came better against Radial Club of Nagaon again in a tiebreaker 7-6 while SAIL beat Mohun Bagan SAIL Football Academy 2-0 in other match of the day.
Because of unprecedented rain in the city for the last couple of days, the ground condition of the
Nehru Stadium was rendered almost unplayable, yet two matches were held on Oct 7 in the Stadium
making the ground condition far more worse for the coming matches.
Royal Sports in next round:
Guwahati: Royal Sports advanced to the next round of the Bordoloi Trophy Football Tournament
thrashing Kokrajhar XI by 4-1 at the Nehru Stadium here on Oct 6. The ground of the Nehru stadium
was slippery due to incessant rain. But Royal Sports still managed to win the match with a good
margin. A Mitai, B Rabha (2) and TK Singh scored for the winning team while Kokrajhar reduced one
through M Mushahari. Meanwhile, the other match of the day, which was scheduled to be held in
Mirza between Mohun Bagan SAIL football Academy and SAIL, was postponed for a day due to
rain, and he match will be held in the same venue on Oct 7. in the city there will be two matches on
Oct 7. NF Railway will play against Radial Sports Club of Nagaon while ASEB will meet against FCI.
Oil India wins I-Day Cup:
Guwahati: OIL XI added another feather in their cap when they lifted the Independence Day Cup
Football Championship defeating Kiderpore Sporting of Kolkata 2-0 in the final played at the Nurul
Amin Stadium, Nagaon on Oct 6. OIL went to the ground as the favourite after the superb
performance throughout the tournament. After a barren first half, OIL got the first goal through Mrinal
Boro in the 78th minute of the match. They sealed the fate of the match in the dying minute when the
opportunist striker Birjab Mushari found the target.
Kiran Powar likely to join Baroda:
Guwahati: Assam may have loss a wicket before they start this year's Ranji Trophy campaign as one
of the three out station player is planning to play for the other State. It has been learnt that the
concern player already sought NoC from the ACA. This year ACA has decided to follow BCCI's rules
and so they kept only three out station players, Kiran Powar, S Sarvanan and R Satish in the
probable list. But Kiran Powar, who was consistent with the bat for the last couple of seasons, has
decided to change the State and it is almost final that he will play for Baroda this year. An ACA
source informed that top brass are trying to convince Kiran. The source however also hinted that
why Kiran has taken this step. Sources close to Powar, said that Kiran More was very keen to get
his service in Baroda team and the offer came to Powar through the former test cricketer.
ASJA Awards announced:
Guwahati: The Assam Sports Journalist Association on September 29 announced the name of the
players and referee who will receive the annual award of the association to be held on November
10. Announcing the name of the award winners the president of the Assam Sports Journalist
Association Balendra Mohan Chakraborty said that this year altogether eight players and referee will
get awards. Meanwhile Harendra Nath Barua Inter-media Football tournament will be held from
November 28. Chakraborty added that the date for the Inter-media Badminton and Table Tennis has
been fixed on November 4 and 5.
Royal Sports, SAI up:
Guwahati: Royal Sports thrashed Young Blue 6-0 in a one sided affair of the A division Football
League being played at the Nehru Stadium here on Sept 29. P Singh (2), C R Singh, M R Singh, T S
Singh and M Boon were the scores for the winning side. Meanwhile SAI also registered a big win
against Sunrise as the young brigade defeated their opponent 4-2 in the other league match of the
day also played in the Nehru Stadium. Manikanta Brahma scored two while Samsung Langthasa
and Tinku Handique were the other scores for the winning side.
Tapan Das named manager of Dhaka-bound hockey team:
Guwahati: Tapan Kumar Das, honorary secretary of the Assam Hockey Association has been
appointed as manager of the India U-21 team to take part in the Challenge Cup hockey Tournament
to be held at Dhaka from Sept 30 to October 7. It is worth mentioning here that Tapan Das is the
president of the All Nagaon Students' Union. The All Assam Students' union in a press release has
congratulated Tapan Das on his achievement.
South Zone dominate Oriental Insurance carrom:
Guwahati: South zone have lifted the men's and women's team title in the 6 th All India Oriental
Insurance Carrom Tournament which concluded here in Guwahati on Sept 26. South Zone in both
the men's and women's team finals, the releases added.
Sukhwinder axed, ACA names Ranji probables:
Guwahati: Sukhwinder Singh, captain of Assam in the Ranji Trophy last season has been omitted
from the Assam team for the Ranji Trophy. The assam Cricket Association on Sept 27 announced
the names of the probables for the selection-cum-coaching camp to select the State squad for the
Ranji Trophy Eleite Group to be held in Guwahati from October 7. Another notable omission is vishal
Jain, the promising batsman who scored plenty of runs for Guwahati in various tournaments.
Buds felicitate cricketers:
Guwahati: Buds Cricket Club on Sept 26 felicitated 20 former Ranji cricketers who represented
Assam between 1975-80. the function held at the T Ao Indor stadium Hall at Cotton College. The
Club also felicitated cricketers who performed credibly for the state in the last season. It may be
mentioned here that Buds Cricket Club took this unique step of felicitating former cricketers who had
once shone while playing for the State.
Sunrise beat Royal Sports:
Guwahati: Sunrise defeated Royal Sports 1-0 in the 'A' Division Football League which resumed on
Sept 26 at the Nehru stadium Ground. The all important goal of the match was scored by Birat
Mech.
Seven-a side soccer at Lutuma:
Guwahati: A one-day prize money seven-a side day- night football championship will be held at
Lutuma school ground on October 12. The tournament, organised by the Football Coaching Centre,
Lutuma, will be held in two categories: U-14 and general.
Inter-Club Body Building:
Guwahati: The fourth All Guwahati Inter-Club Body Building Championship will be held on October
tw at the Sonaram High School Ground. The tournament will be held in seven weight categories.
Dasmunshi to attend Bordoloi Trophy final:
Guwahati: Union Water Resource Minister and the president of All India Football Federation, Priya
Ranjan Dasmunshi will present in the closing function of the Bordoloi Trophy Football Championship
as a chief guest. A source from the GSA said that during Mr Dasmunshi's two-day Assam visit, a
team of the GSA officials met the president of the AIFF and he agreed to attend the closing function
of the Bordoloi Trophy. The final will be on October 16. The source however denied to disclose
about the output of the discussion held between the GSA officials and Dasmunshi.
NF Rly in Nurul Amin Trophy final:
Guwahati: Opener Parvez Aziz helped NF Rly to enter in the final of the Nurul amin Trophy Cricket
Championship which was scheduled to be held at the Nehru Stadium from September 23. NF Rly
will face Guwahati in the final. Parvez was in tremendous form in the semi final played at the Nehru
Stadium on Sept 21 where he knocked 18 boundaries to play his 116 runs epic innings.
Body building championship:
Guwahati: Guwahati District Body building association will organise 10 th Annual Guwahati District
body building Championship at Bihutoli field of Sector-2 in Guwahati Refinery area. The meet will
organise by the Noonmati Health Club and will be held for sub-junior, junior, senior and masters
category.

Guwahati: the Hiteswar Saikia Ranking Badminton tournament, organised by the Assam Badminton
Association, got under way at the Kanaklata stadium on Sept 21. State minister Hemaprabha Saikia
inaugurated the tournament where more then 150 players are taking part in different events.
Archana has her feet firmly planted:
Guwahati: Although she could not participate in her own age category due to her being overweight in
the Sub-junior National weightlifting Championship recently held in Mumbai but Archana Boro, the
talented weightlifter from Assam, still kept her date with a medal in the championship. Archana won
silver in the 63 kilos weight categories. It was certainly best ever performance by a State weightlifter
in any national championship. State sports lovers expectation will be definitely go up, but Archana
admitted that it was a different ball game competing in the senior category. She said that she was
focusing on improving her performance and was not thinking about the National Games. She said
that her coach Ajit Baishya was helping her a lot. Later revealing her future plan, Archana added, "
My ultimate goal is to participate in the Asian Games and Olympic and bring medals from there".
All Assam marathon on Oct 10:
Guwahati: The Third All Assam Invitational Prize Money Marathon race will be held in the city on
October 10. The secretary of the organising committee Taibun Nisha on Sept 15 informed the media
that there will be three events in the championship-men's, women's and boy's. The men's champion
will get the Debabrata Banerjee Trophy while the women's champion will receive the Junumoni
Saikia Duarah Trophy and the boys champion will be awarded Ashwini Rajbangshi Trophy. The run
will begin from the Maligaon Railway Stadium. Around 100 participants are expected to take part in
the race.
Full points for Sunrise:
Guwahati: Sunrise earned full points in the Sekhar Goswami A Division Football League as they
registered a 2-0 victory over Young Blue at the Nehru Stadium on Sept 15. Birat Mech and
Lawrence Rongpi scored for the winners.
Oil school, SSA advance:
Guwahati: Oil HS School of Duliajan and Srimanta Sankar Academy registered wins in the Golap
Hazarika U-14 Inter-School Cricket Championship, Currently in progress at the Dispur playground.
In the first match of the day, OIL defeated Gurukul Sanskrit School by 37 runs while in the other
match of the day, which was a close encounter, Srimanta Sankar Academy edged past Delhi Public
School by four runs.
Rajbari stun FCI:
Guwahati: Rajbari stunned FCI 2-0 to earn full points in the Sekhar Goswami a Division football
League played at the Nehru Stadium Ground here on September 12. the hero of the match was
Sappa Singh who scored both the goals, coincidentally 25 minutes into each half. It was FCI who
went into the field as a favourite but Rajbari side displayed superb football and succeeded in
stamping their authority. So intense was the pressure on the FCI half that even when they got a
penalty kick, the opportunity went by. After 12th September's win, Rajbari has gone on top of the
points table, with nine points from four outings. FCI is in the second spot with six points from three
matches.
Assam rifles School, Don Bosco win B' ball titles:
Guwahati: Assam Rifles Public School, Shillong and Don Bosco School, Kokrajhar lifted the boys
and girls title respectively of the CBSE Cluster-1 Basketball tournament which concluded in the city
on Sept 12. in the boys final, held at the Hengrabari Basketball court, Assam Rifles Public School
defeated host Hindustani Kendriya Vidyalaya of Guwahati 25-8. the girls event was held on a league
basis and Don Bosco topped the point table. Kaziranga English Academy came second best team in
the girls section of the tournament. Regional officer of CBSE K K Chowdhury was the chief guest in
the closing function.
Former test greats to play in Silchar:
Guwahati: Silchar will host the second match of the Rishta Cup which will be held on October one at
the Satindra Mohan Dev Stadium between India XI and Pakistan XI. Former cricketers like Kapil
dev, Wasim Akram have taken the initiative to organize the tournament to strengthen the relation

Guwahati: The final of the Junior Inter-district Football tournament will be held on Sept 11 at
Dhakuakhana between Silchar and Biswanath Chariali. Silchar overcame a stiff challenge from
Kokrajhar in the semi final to earn a final berth, while Biswanath Chariali brushed aside Guwahati's
challenge in the second semi final on Sept 9.
GSA to donate Rs 10,000 to CM's Flood Relief Fund:
Guwahati: GSA will donate Rs 10,000 to the Chief Minister's Flood Relief fund which the Association
collected as gate money from the recently concluded Super League matches. Informing this to the
media, the secretary of GSA Binoy Medhi said that the money collected from the five matches of
super League will be handed over to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund within a short period. He
thanked all the players, spectators, officials of different associations in helping the GSA in this noble
endeavour. Meanwhile the preparation of the Bordoloi Trophy is going on in full swing. A source
from the GSA said that a couple of sponsors have already come forward, and one of them has
contributed a 'hefty' sum in GSA's coffer.
State soccer team leaves Dharamnagar:
Guwahati: The Assam soccer team on Sept 9 left for the qualifying round of the Mir Iqbal sub Junior
national football championship which will be held in Dharamnagar from September 12. Before the
teams' departure, the coach of the side Bidhan Das sounded optimistic about the teams'
performance in the tournament.
City Police earn full points:
City Police earned full points against Rajbari Club in the A Division Football league which resumed
at the Nehru stadium ground on Sept 9. Police team won the match 4-0. Manoj Ahmed scored two
goals while Mahendra Bramha and Ziaur Rahman scored one goal each for the winners. There will
be no match on Sept 10. Rising Eleven will met City Police on Saturday.
Silchar will meet Biswanath in final:
Guwahati: Silchar will play against Biswanath Charali in the final of the Junior Inter district Football
championship to be held at Dhakuakhana on Sept 11. In the second semi final on Sept 8, Biswanath
Chariali defeated favourite Guwahati 3-1 to earn the final berth.
GSA cricket trial camp:
Thirty three players have been invited by the GSA for trial-cum-selection camp which will be
organized to select its team for the final match of the Nurul Amin Cricket Championship. Cricket
secretary of GSA Jehirul Haque on Sept 9 informed the media that the camp will begin at the Nehru
Stadium from September 18. It may be mentioned here that Guwahati will meet against the winner
of the second semi final, which is to be played between NF Railway and Nagaon. The second semi
final is scheduled to be held on September 21 and 22 at the Nehru Stadium.
Oil India in semis:
Guwahati: Defending championship Oil India stormed into the semi final of the ATPA Shield football
tournament defeating Tinsukia Railway Sports Club 3-0 played at the Jorhat Stadium on Sept 9. Oil
striker Mrinal Boro scored the first goal in the 17th minutes of the match through a good header.
Probodh Gogoi increased the margin in the 56th minute of the match. At the dying moment of the
match substitute player Tridip Khound netted the third goal. Assam Police Blues will take on Assam
rifles in the third quarter-final match on September 10.

Guwahati: Former test cricketer and NCA coach Lalchand Rajput has said that Assam's junior
cricketers have the talent to advance in cricket. After his first day with them at the Nehru Stadium
here on Sept 7, Rajput said that these cricketers need to be groomed up 'properly'. The camp, which
got under way on Sept 6 at the Nehru Stadium, has 22 cricketers of 22 cricketers of U-15 age group
taking part in it. In fact, the ACA has got its act right this time round by inviting only those cricketers
whose name figure in the probables' list in the U-15 category. After the first day's workout with the
young players of the State, Rajput said that back to basics right then it will really help them to
establish themselves as good cricketers in future."

Guwahati: Favourite Guwahati entered into the semi-final of the Junior Inter-district Football
Championship defeating Dibrugarh 5-2 at Dhakuakhana on Sept 7. In the last four matches

Guwahati: The third U-19 Girls Inter district Football Championship will get under way at Sadiya on
September 15 with the match between Tinsukia and Golaghat. Altogether, 11 teams are taking part
in the championships.
Exposure tour ends with a loss:
Guwahati: Assam on September 7 completed its exposure tour with a loss against Hyderabad in the
Moin-ud-dullah Cricket Tournament, which the home side won by seven wickets on September 7.
The match was a three-dayer one, but was washed out due to heavy rains. Later, both the sides
agreed to play a one-dayer to decide the fourth team for the semi final. Batting first, Assam could
only score 132 for nine in 41 overs.
Stormy AFA meeting raps Games Sectt:
Guwahati: The members of the governing body of the Assam Football Association on Sept 5
strongly resented the attitude taken by the Games Secretariat on the Stephen Constantine's
coaches camp. They felt that if the attitude of the Secretariat continues to remain same, the AFA
should think twice before offering any aid towards the National Games. The members of the AFA's
governing body meet on Sept 5 in the office premises of the association where different issues were
discussed. The date for the annual general meeting of the association was also finalized. But many
in the AFA were seething with anger at the fact that the Games Secretariat was in one sense trying
to sideline it regarding the National Games.

Guwahati: Assam were knocked out of the Elite League of the Ranji Trophy in an inglorious way
when formidable hosts Hyderabad inflicted an innings defeat on the visitors at Hyderabad here on
Jan 2. the match ended well inside three days. It was for the first time since the beginning of the
Elite League system that Assam has been relegated to the Plate Division. Hyderabad on the basis of
their an innings and 56 runs win logged five points to top the Elite 'B' group with 17 points and
ensured themselves a berth in semi finals of the Ranji Trophy. Put in to bat, the hosts piled up 340

CM to open inter dist athletics:
Guwahati: The Inter district Athletic Championship will get under way at Titabor on January 5. Chief
Minister Tarun Gogoi will inaugurate the meet where around the meet where around 700 participants
are expected to take part. The secretary of the Assam Amateur Athletics Association (AAAA) Sarif
Ullah said that under AAAA, there are 37 affiliated district and almost all of them have given their

Guwahati: It was probably the worst Ranji Trophy performance by Assam team in the last one
decade. Assam altogether played six match in the group league and didn't collect a single point in
this season. This season Assam used 19 cricketers in different matches and only a few cricketers
were successful in the season.
Assam to meet Tripura on Jan 11:
Guwahati: Assam will take on Tripura in the opening match of the East Zone one day cricket match
to be held in Kolkata on January 11. The other teams who are in the fray to move into the next round
are host Bengal, Orissa and Jharkhand.
TT selection camp from Jan 4:

Guwahati: Shantipur Athletic Club moved into the semifinal of the 11 th Guwahati Challenge Trophy
defeating New Star Club by 57 runs played at the Latasil Ground on Jan 3. Batting first Shantipur AC
piled up a mammoth 194 for 9 in 30 overs. Parvez of the Shantipur AC scored a brilliant 48 runs.
Later he claimed three wickets for 18 runs. Chasing the victory target of 199 runs New Star team
scored 137 for 9 wickets.
All India BSNL badminton from Jan 6:
Guwahati: The fourth all India Badminton Tournament 2004-2005 will be held from January 6 to 11.
Organized by the Assam Circle Sports and Cultural Board BSNL, the tournament will see telecom
circles of all Indian States participating in it. The opening ceremony of the tournament will be held at
the Nehru Stadium where A K Sanwalka, General Manager NF Railway will be chief guest.
Olympian Dipankar Bhattacharjee will be guest of honour in the opening ceremony. The organizers
have also said that matches will be held simultaneously at two venues- Nehru Stadium and NF
Railway Indoor Stadium, Maligaon.
CM to inaugurate inter-dist tennis:
Guwahati: Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi will inaugurate the 19th All Assam Inter-district Tennis
Championships beginning at Jorhat from January 6, from the All Assam Tennis Club. Participants
from OIL, Assam Police, NF Railway, Guwahati, Nagaon, Tinsukia, Golaghat, Sibsagar, and hosts
Jorhat among others will participate in the meet. Besides the singles event, there will be team events
in the boys U-14, girls U-14 and men's and women's event. Interestingly, an All Assam Veterans'
Doubles Tournament in two age groups- above 45 and 50 will also be held in the meet.
Rich haul NE karatekas:
Guwahati: Participants from North-east India bagged laurels in the All India Full Contact Karate
Championships held at the Rabindra Sarobar in Kolkata recently. Gaurav Dev Baruah bagged a gold
in the senior group while Aruna Jyrwa and Akash Das bagged golds in the junior group. Besides the
golds, there were one silver and four bronzes for the karatekas from the region.
Zuffri to lead Assam:
Guwahati: Zakaria Zuffri will lead Assam in East Zone one day cricket tournament which will begin at
Kolkata from January 11. The squad announced by the Assam Cricket Association sprang almost no
major changes from the one that played in the Ranji Trophy Elite League. However, Babu Ram
Magor and Devabrata Roy were drafted in the team. Assam will play its first match against Tripura
on the inaugural day of the tournament.

Boxing body honours medal winners:
Guwahati: The Assam Amateur Boxing Association (AABA), on Jan 5, felicitated medal winners
boxers, who took part in the recently-concluded Senior National Women Boxing Championship held
at Kerala. The felicitation programme was held in the SAI complex, which was also attended by the
director-in-charge of SAI Subhash Basumatari, the general secretary of AABA Kalikanta Boro and
other officials of the Association. It may be mentioned here that Pranamika Bora bagged a gold
medal in the 60kg event of the championship while Kalpana Choudhury (48kg), Jahnobi Gogoi
(50kg), Dipika Das and Polly Sonowal (98kg) bagged silver medals in the tournament.
NE boxing from Jan 6:
Guwahati: The first North East Zone Boxing Championship will be held in Shillong from Jan 6. the
meet, to be hosted by Assam rifles, is being organized on behalf of the Indian Amateur Boxing
championship to hunt talents. All North-east states and a team from Assam Rifles are expected to
take part in the tournament from where the North-east team will be selected for the first National
Inter-Zonal Boxing Championship scheduled to be held in Mumbai in the last week of January.
Fellowship for Dipankar Bhattacharya:
Guwahati: Dr Dipankar Bhattacharya of Oil India Limited has been awarded fellowship in Sports
Medicine by the Indian Association of Sports Medicine (IASM) for the year 2004-05. The fellowship
will be conferred on Dr Bhattacharyya at the inaugural function of IASM's annual conference
scheduled to be held at Chennai on January 8.
Assam bag 3rd slot in national junior archery:
Guwahati: Assam bagged the third position in the medal tally of the 27 th Junior National Archery
Championship, which recently held in Chandigarh. Assam claimed five silver and four bronzes on
way to grab the third spot. Anup Rabha and Chayanika Boro stole the show with a number of
medals to their credit. Assam won the second place in the boys and girls team events also.

Guwahati: Bud Cricket Club moved into the semi final of the 11 th Guwahati Challenge Trophy

Guwahati: Salbagan Sports Club of Gossaigaon will take on Mudaibari Jawglawary Club of
Mangaldoi in the inaugural match of the ninth Assam Club Championship Football Tournament

announced the schedule of the tournament where eighteen teams are taking part in the knock-out
format. The semi final and the final are slated for Jan 27, 28 and 30 respectively.
Pabitra, Atema win title:
Guwahati: Pabitra Medhi of Assam Police and Atema Begum of NF Railway became the fastest men
and woman in All Assam Inter District Championship which is currently in progress at Titabor.
Pabitra clocked 11.22 second to grab the first spot. Meanwhile, Nagen Majhi of Sibasagar claimed

NE soccer qualifiers for nationals in Aizawl:
Guwahati: The qualifying round of the Junior National Football Championship (for NE) will be held at
Aizawl from Feb 1. All the north-eastern States including Assam will be seen in action in this

Vital lead for Assam in Polly Umrigar tie:
Guwahati: Assam got a vital 49 runs lead in the Polly Umrigar Cricket Tournament against Tripura
when they were bowled out for 211 runs in Agartala on Saturday. Chasing Tripura's first innings total
of 162, Assam were 93 for 5 on Dec 10. but the lower order batsmen fought with great determination

Inter-district cricket from Dec 25:
Guwahati: The Nuruddin Ahmed Senior Inter-District Cricket Tournament will begin simultaneously
in different parts of the State from Dec 25. ACA sources said that all the affiliated units of the
Association will take part in the tournament.
North-east Sports Festival from Jan 6:
Guwahati: the next edition of the North East Sports Festival will be held in the city from January 6.
Apart from hosts Assam, seven States- Tripura, Manipur, Nagaland. Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh,
Sikkim and Meghalaya will take part in the four day tournament, which is considered as a dress
rehearsal of the 2005 National Games. Altogether, eight disciplines- badminton, athletics, football,
hockey, judo, table tennis, weightlifting and boxing (women), will be held in the meet. The number of
participants will be around 1,200. meanwhile, a meeting of the secretaries of the State associations
of these eight disciplines has been convened at the Rudra Singha Sports Complex on December 16.
Besides, the All Assam Rural Sports meet for Archery and Weightlifting for the below 16 years will
be held at Sarupathar from December 31.

Assam on verge of relegation after innings defeat:
Guwahati: Iqbal Siddiqui shone with both the bat and the ball as hosts Maharastra romped home to
a comprehensive innings and 46 runs victory over Assam at Aurangabad on Dec 15. With this loss,
Assam is on the verge of relegation from the Elite Group of the Ranji Trophy Championship, as they
are yet to open their account after the completion of the fifth round of the tournament. The side will

Guwahati: Assam bagged two points from the drawn match against Baroda in the CV Trophy Cricket
Tournament which concluded on Dec 15 at Pune. In reply to Baroda's first innings at 388 for 8.

Guwahati: A fine century from Debabrata Sen (106) helped Assam to take full control against

Guwahati: The XIV th All Assam Tennis Championship, organized by North East Tennis Foundation,

City to host two one days:
Guwahati: Assam Cricket Association will organize two U-19 one day matches between India and
England in the city next year. A source from the ACA on Dec 16 said that both the matches will be
held in the Nehru Stadium on February 11 and 12.
Karnataka hog the limelight on opening day:
Guwahati: It was the day for Karnataka as Md Imran and Manisha of the State, bagged the first gold
medal in the men's and women's event respectively in the 23rd Senior National Taekwondo
Championship which got under way at the Nehru Stadium here on Dec 17.
GSA athletic meet from Dec 29:
Guwahati: Ranjit Gogoi Memorial GSA Athletic meet will begin in the Nehru Stadium from Dec 29.
The athletic secretary of the GSA Pranab Saikia said that apart from men's and women's there will
be some other events also like boy's and girl's U-14, 16 and 18. The last date of the entry has been

Karnataka domination on, Assam girl Handique wins bronze:
Guwahati: Pinkumoni Handique brought smile to Assam supporters in the 23 rd Senior National
Taekwondo Championship as the Assam girl took the bronze medal in the fin weight category of the
ladies event. The gold in this event went to Karnataka when Jayanti Pathak bagged the top spot
defeating Suvarna A Joshi of Maharashtra. The second bronze of the event was claimed by Renuka
Verma of Madhya Pradesh.
ESPN Star Sports Quiz held in city school:
School students of the city have once again shown their enthusiasm in the recently concluded ESPN
Star Sports Quiz. About 200 school children from all over the city participated in the event. The
event was held at Hindustani Kendriya Vidyalaya, Bhangagarh.
Inter-Club Bench Press meet from January 2:
Guwahati: The Inter-Club Bench Press Championship for men and women, organized by Montu's
Open Gym, will be held in the city on January 2, 2005. The team for the North-east and Stat Bench
Championship will be selected on the basis of the performance in the competition. Both the Northeast and the State Bench Championship will be held at Karimganj from January 9.

Guwahati: Guwahati Cricket Coaching Centre earned a semi final berth in the ongoing KK Ojha
Silver Jubilee Cricket Cup Tournament defeating Titan Club by seven wickets. The heroes of the
match were Ripon Handique and Ranji Trophy discard RK Mritunjoy Gohain scored a fine half
century to guide his team into the last four stage while Ripon single-handedly ripped through the
Opponent innings claiming six wickets for just 23 runs. Chasing a victory target of 121, Guwahati
Cricket Coaching Centre reached the goal losing just three wickets with more then twelve overs to
spare. Gohain remained not out on 59.
SAI finish on top to win GSA athletics meet:
Guwahati: SAI have lifted the best team award in the Ranjit Gogoi Memorial GSA annual Athletic
Meet which concluded at the Nehru Stadium on Dec 31. The result was on expected lines as SAI
dominated the meet throughout bagging 30 golds, 11 silvers and 9 bronzes medal to collect 192
points, which helped them to take the top spot in the meet. It was a double bonanza for SAI team as
four of their athletes snatched the best athletes award in different categories.
Assam finish third in national women boxing:
Guwahati: Assam bagged the third position in the recently-concluded fifth National Women Boxing
Championship thanks to some magnificent performance from Pranamika Bora and other boxers of
the Sports Authority of India. Assam won one gold and four silver medal in the meet. The lone gold
medal was won by Pranamika Bora while Kalpana Choudhury, Jahnabi Gogoi, Deepika Das and
Poli Sonowal earned silvers in the tournament.
Laxman props up Hyderabad in Ranji tie vs Assam:
Guwahati: Hyderabad dominated the first Day's in the four-day Ranji match against Assam as the
home team piled up 337 runs for eight at the Gymkhana ground at Hyderabad on Dec 31. It was test
cricketer VVS Laxman who neutralized all advantage that Assam got early in the morning and single
handedly put his time in a strong position with a scintillating century.
Bud Cricket Club up in Guwahati Challenger Trophy:
Guwahati: Bud Cricket Club defeated Chicago Bulls by 45 runs in the 11 th Guwahati Challenger
Cricket Trophy played at the Latasil Ground in the city on Dec 31.
Major upset in All Assam tennis:
Guwahati: Siddharth Shankar Bora caused the biggest upset in the boys U-12 category as he sent
packing top seedAryaman Baruah in the first round of the All Assam Tennis Championship which got
under way at the North East Tennis Foundation on Dec 19. however, other seeds sailed smoothly
into the next round in the all categories. Earlier, the meet was inaugurated by the Principal Secretary
of the Sports and Youth Welfare Department PK Choudhury. A record 262 participants are taking
part in the tournament in six different categories.
Bronze for Assam in National School Games:
Guwahati: Assam bagged a bronze medal in the boys U-14 team event in the National School
Games which concluded recently at Pune. Assam team comprising Anurag Baruah, Rekibul Hussain
and Suddhant Mohanty defeated Andhra Pradesh and Delhi to earn the bronze medal.
Assam high jumper wins silver in Natl Junior athletics:
Guwahati: Assam earned a silver medal through Gagan Baruah in the National Junior Athletic
Championship which is currently in progress at Vijaywada. Gagan won the medal in the high jump
even. Meanwhile, the secretary of the Assam Amateur Athletic Association secretary Sarif Ullah has
informed the media that the last date of entry for the Inter district Athletic meet has been fixed on
Dec 28. the meet January 4, 2005.
Bud Cricket Club 'B' advance:
Guwahati: Bud Cricket Club 'B' registered a six wicket win against Santipur in a well contested
match to move into the semi final of the KK Ojha Cricket Tournament, which is currently in progress,
at the Latasil Ground. Electing to bat first, Shantipur made 179 runs for six wickets in their stipulated
30 overs.
Lahkar wins title in all India ranking TT:
Guwahati: Kakoli Lahkar has won the Sub Junior Girls event of the All India Ranking Table Tennis
Championship by beating top seeded Shreya Ghosh of Bengal in the final on Dec 19 at Gurgaon.
Assam-Bengal VM Trophy tie heading for a draw:
Guwahati: Kunal Choudhury of Bengal scored the second century for his side against Assam in the
Vijay Merchant Trophy Cricket tournament. Despite his ton, Assam were poised to grab the top
position in the group. Due to bad light, two session of play was lost, and if the first innings of the
match is not completed on Dec 22, both the sides will share points and hosts Assam will then edge
Bengal out on points.
Coaching camp for Guwahati team for U-15 cricket from Dec 23:
Guwahati: A coaching-cum-selection camp will be held at the Nehru Stadium from December 23 to
select the Guwahati team for the U-15 Amarjit Sharma Cricket Tournament. The cricket secretary of
GSA Zaherul Haq said that interested cricketers should contact GSA on Dec 22 in evening with their
age proof certificate.
AHSEC school, junior college meet from Dec 26:
Guwahati: The Third All Assam HS School and Junior College students' meet will begin at the Nehru
Stadium on Dec 26. The three-day meet, organized by the Assam Higher Secondary Education
Council, will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. Education Minister Hem Prakash
Narayan will also attend the inaugural programme as guest of honour.
No upset in All Assam tennis:
Guwahati: The fourth day of the 14th All Assam Tennis Championship concluded without any upset
as all the seeded player moved to the next round. In the men's event, at the NETF court here on Dec
23, top seeded Ranjit Dutta thrashed Tutu Thapa 9-1 to advanced into the semifinal. Second seeded
Priyanuz Lahakar also moved into the last four stage defeating Parikshit Bhattacharjee by an
identical margin. However, other two semi finals were well contested as Rupam Boro needed a tiebreaker before moving in to the semifinal while Srinivias Rout beat H Mangalam 9-7.
GCCC in KK Ojha cricket final:
Guwahati: Guwahati Cricket Coaching Centre (GCCC) entered into the final of the KK Ojha cricket
Tournament defeating Ankurjyoti Club by 12 runs. The winners now meet Bud Cricket Club A in the
final scheduled to be held on Dec 24.
Bengal-Assam VM Trophy tie drawn, Bengal top group:
Guwahati: The Vijay Merchant match between Assam and Bengal ended in a time draw as the third
day's play was abandoned due to bad light. Assam faced just two balls in the morning on Dec 23
before the match was called off due to bad weather.
Ridhima, Sebir and Momin in finals:
Guwahati: The 14th All Assam Ranking Tennis Championship held at North East Tennis Foundation
Courts is coming to the final stage on the fifth day. Trinayan Talukdar and Rupam Gogoi (Boy's U12), Rishima Barua and Pamer Gogoi (Girl's U-14), Priyanju Lahkar and Ranjit Dutta (Men's) will

Guwahati: Assam Sepak Takraw Association have selected players and officials to represent Assam
team in the 7th Sub-Jr Sepak Takraw National championship Boy's and Girl's which is scheduled to
be held at Madgaon, Goa from December 28. The selected players and officials are: (Boy's) Sanju

Gauhati HC Bar association cricket team beat Jabalpur HC Bar Association team:
Guwahati: Gauhati High Court Bar Association cricket team defeated Jabalpur High Court Bar
Association team by six wickets in the All India High Court Bar Association Cricket Tournament
played at Jabalpur on Dec 25. Batting first, Jabalpur HC Bar Association team scored 173 runs in 37
overs. In reply, Gauhati HC Bar Association team reached the target at the cost of four wickets.
Priyanuj, Ridhima win title:
Guwahati: Second seeded Priyanuj Lahakar lifted the men's title in the All Assam Ranking Tennis
Championship upsetting top seeded Ranjit Dutta in a on sided final played at the NETF Ground here
on Dec 25.
GCCC win KK Ojha trophy:
Guwahati: Guwahati Cricket Coaching center (GCCC) lifted the first trophy of the season KK Ojha
Silver Cup defeating Bud Cricket Club 'A' by 71 runs played at Latasil Ground here on Dec 25.

Zonal volleyball and basketball from Dec 26:
Guwahati: The Employees Provident Fund Organization (NE Region), Guwahati, will organize the
Zonal Volleyball and Basketball Meet from Dec 26. Apart from North East teams like Bengal Orissa
and Bihar will take part in the meet. The zonal meet will be followed by the all India final competition
scheduled to be held from Dec 28. The volley ball meet will be held at the Assam Volleyball
Association Ground at Panbazar and the basketball will be held at Don Bosco School campus.
Assam claim four medals:
Guwahati: Assam clinched four medals including two golds in the 14 th National Kickboxing
championship which was held in Pune from Dec 19 to 22. The event was organized by Mka under
the auspices of National Kickboxing Federation. The medals winning players: Gold Iragdo Daimary
(Udalguri) and Swmdwm Basumatary (Chirang), Silver: Thaneswar Basumatary (Kokrajhar), Bronze:
Binod Boro.
U-19 boxing selection-cum-coaching camp for National School Games at Golaghat:
Guwahati: Under-19 National School Games Boxing Championship will be held at Janpad
(Dehradum) from January 15 to 19. In this regard the Director of Sports and Youth Welfare propose
to organize a selection-cum-coaching camp from Dec 28 to January 7 at Golaghat on Dec 28 with
eligibility certificate.
Rishab to lead Guwahati in U-15 cricket:
Guwahati: Rishab Das will lead Guwahati in the Amarjit Sharma U-15 Cricket Tournament, which is
currently in progress at Golaghat. Guwahati will meet dhemaji in their inaugural match schedule to
be held on Dec 28.
National Amateur Muay Thai Championship in Progress:
Guwahati: The fifth National Amateur Muay Thai Championship got under way on Sunday at the SAI
Complex. General secretary of the APCC J P Singh was the chief guest in the inaugural function.
Altogether 300 participants from eight States are taking part in this meet. Meanwhile Karnataka girl
Samreen took the 25-28 kg event gold in the girls event.
Inter-dist soccer in January, 2005:
Guwahati: The 55th Senior Inter-district Football tournament for Khirod Baruah Trophy will be held at
Golaghat in the third week of January. The secretary of the Assam Football Association Ankur Dutta
said that the last date for the entry has been fixed on January 10.
Assam looking down the barrel in Ranji tie:
Guwahati: Assam were heading for a huge defeat against fancied Hyderabad in their last Ranji
Trophy Elite League match at Hyderabad on Jan 1. Forced to follow on after an insipid batting
performance, especially from top order, Assam were nine for 2 when stumps were drawn for the
day. Earlier, brilliant left arm spin bowling by young Inder Sekher Reddy with support from medium
pacers at the other end exposed Assam's batting. Assam were dismissed for just 158 in their first
innings.
'NE States need more funds for soccer talents':
Guwahati: North-east needs more funds to develop football, said former Indian soccer captain
Rennedy Singh. He feels that the region has enough talents for this game but without sufficient
funds they cannot be made to develop.
Ankur Dutta in AIFF body:
Guwahati: The secretary of the Assam Football Association Ankur Dutta has been included in the
executive body of the All India Football Federation. The new office-bearers of AIFF were selected in
a meeting held in New Delhi on Dec 28. He is the lone face in the committee from Assam. Dutta,
who attended on 28th December's meeting, said that he had a preliminary discussion with the
president of the AIFF Priyaranjan Dasmunshi regarding the game in Assam.
Tinku, Dipali fastest in GSA meet:
Guwahati: Tinku Handique and Dipali Deori, both from the city SAI center, claimed the honour of the
fastest men and women prize in the Ranjit Gogoi Memorial GSA Annual Athletic Meet which got
under way at the Nehru Stadium on Dec 29. Tinku clocked 11.62 seconds to claim the top spot while
Dipali Deori took 13.16 seconds to complete the race. SAI is leading the medals tally after
completion of the first day, claiming seven gold medals. Earlier, the meet was inaugurated by the
Director of Sports and Youth Welfare Dhruba Hazarika. SAI Director Subash Basumatary, Deputy
Director Rajiv Prakash Barua, GSA secretary Binoy Medhi, GSA vice-president Pulak Goswami
were also president in the inaugural programme. Altogether, 165 participants from 15 teams are
taking part in the three day meet which will concluded on Dec 31.
Assam Club Championship at Gossaigaon:
Guwahati: The Assam Club Championship will be held at Gossaigaon in the last week of this month.
The last date for the entry has been fixed at December 22. It may be mentioned here that the
champion and runner-up of the tournament will be allowed to take part in the 'B' division National
League Football. Meanwhile, the first meeting of the newly-elected governing body of the Assam
Football Association will be held on Dec 19.
Tripura strike back in Polly Umrigar tie:
Guwahati: The Polly Umrigar cricket match between Assam and Tripura is evently poised after the
first day's play at Agartala on Dec 10. Tripura after being bowled out for 162 runs struck back to take
five Assam wickets at the end of the day's play. Assam were 93 runs for five when stumps were
drawn. Krishna Das was the most successful bowler for Assam. He picked up three wickets.
Assam in command vs Orrissa in VM Trophy:
Guwahati: Assam were in a commanding position against Orissa in the VM Trophy Cricket
Tournament as the visitors took a 92 run lead in the first innings in the match being played at
Cuttack, on Dec 8. In reply to Assam's first innings total of 299, Orissa were bowled out on Dec 7 for
207 runs. In the second innings, Assam were six for no loss.
Two State karatekas in India team for Asian tourney:
Guwahati: Two Karatekas from Assam-Bhagyeswar Kuli and Prakash Singh- have been included in
the Indian team which will take part in the Asian Karate championship to be held in Kolkata from
December 23. it may be mentioned here that around 350 participants from the countries like
Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia and host India will take part in the championship which will
be organized by Shin Kyokushin Karate Organisation.
Gautam, Subhadeep, Gohain dropped:
Guwahati: Assam made a few changes in their Ranji Trophy team which will take on Tamil Nadu at
the Nehru Stadium from December 4. the ACA selectors on Dec 1 dropped pacer Gautam Dutta,
middle order batsmen Subhadeep Ghosh and opener RK Mritunjoy Gohain and included Gakul
Sharma and Subhrajeet Saikia.
Assam-Tripura VM tie evently poised:
Guwahati: A close finish is on the cards in the Vijay Merchant U-17 cricket tournament between
Assam and Tripura. Chasing a victory target of 132, Tripura were 48 for four at the end of the
second's play at Silchar on Dec 1. the visitors need another 84 runs to wrap up the match with six
more wickets in their hand. It were the Assam bowlers who brought back the team twice in the
match. Assam made 131 in the first innings and in the first innings and in reply Tripura managed to
take a slender lead of just four runs, thanks to some beautiful bowling from Abu Naschim Ahamed
who claimed three wickets. He was well supported by skipper Swarupam Purkayastha and
Sekharjyoti Barman, both of whom claimed two wickets each. However, Assam batsman couldn't
fine their form in the second innings too, as the side was bundled out for a paltry 135 runs.
All Assam Tennis from Dec 19:
Guwahati: The 14th All Assam Tennis Championship will be held at the North East Tennis
Foundation courts from December 19. the secretary of NETF ankush Dutta informing the news to
the media said that there will be six events in the tournament- Men's, Women's, Boys U-18, 14, 12
and Girls U-14. he also said that the prize money of the tournament is around Rs 35,000. the last
date for entry has been fixed on December 16.
Prasanna to officiate in national meet:
Guwahati: Assam referee Prasanna Kumar Talukdar will officiate in the 53rd Senior National
Volleyball Championship which will be held in Chennai from January 14 to 23. the tournament will be
held in both men's and women's categories.
Bengal beat Assam in Poly Umrigar tie:
Guwahati: Favourite Bengal, in a exciting match, defeated Assam by six wickets in the Under-15
Polly Umrigar Trophy which concluded at the NFRSA Stadium at Maligaon on Nov 30. Bengal
needed just 112 runs in their second innings to win the match and the scored the winning runs off
the last ball of the day losing just four wickets. Joyjeet Basu was the top scorer for Bengal in the
second innings when he scored 57 runs.
Assam has quality body builders: Pujari:
Guwahati: "Body Building in Assam has a future but it needs technical support so that talents can
flourish at the national and international level", said the president of the Indian Body Building
Federation of India Madhav Pujari. Pujari was in the city in connection with the Eastern India Body
Building Federation Championship being staged at the District Library auditorium. Pujari said that if
technical support can be provided to the body builders of Assam, then in future many of them can
bring laurels for the State. He assured that his association will try to give all possible help to the
body builders of Assam as well as in the other north-eastern States, potential.
UP thrash Assam in Ranji tie:
Guwahati: Uttar Pradesh thrashed Assam by eight wickets to collect full points in the Ranji Trophy
tie which concluded on Nov 27 at Kanpur. Assam is yet to open its account in the Ranji Trophy Elite
Group this year. Assam conceded points to Baroda in their first match while it lost to Punjab in its
second match at Amritsar.
AFA AGM on Nov 28, meet likely to be stormy:
Guwahati: The annual general meeting of the Assam Football Association will be held at Kokrajhar
on Nov 28. the new committee of the Association will be formed in this meeting. All eyes of the State
football as election is on this meeting as election is on the cards for the two top post of the
Association-president and secretary. The AGP is widely expected to be a stormy one. The current
secretary of the Association Kedar Nath Mour is seeking another term and he will be challenged by
the vice president of the AFA Ankur Dutta and the former secretary of the Assam Olympic
Association Munin Nobis. Though Nobis couldn't be contacted but the other two candidates of the
secretary were optimistic of getting the top post. In an interesting development, Hemen Bramha who
seemed to be getting elected uncontested, will now be challenged by the vice president of the
Association Motilal Nunisha.
Assam-Bengal Polly Umrigar tie on Nov 28:
Guwahati: Assam will take on Bengal in the U-15 Polly Umrigar cricket tournament which will get
under way at the NFRSA stadium on Nov 28. After a big win against Orrissa, Assam look confident
to repeat their performance in this match against the best team in the tournament in the region.
Assam team for junior boxing named:
Guwahati: Assam Amateur Boxing Association has announced its team for 20th Sub-Junior National
Boxing Championship which is scheduled to begin at Bhilai from December 2. The squad: Sib
Thapa, Bipul Gogoi, Tanuj Bargohain, Bijoy gogoi, Bitupon Bargohain, Gobin Thapa, Ganesh Thapa,
and Jitul Sentua. Amar Deka will be the coach of the side while Bhaskar Barua and Rasadul Haq will
also accompany the team as an official.
Guwahati lift U-21 title:
Guwahati: Guwahati lifted the U-21 Inter-district football title defeating football title defeating host
Charaideo 4-0 at Sonari on Nov 25. Guwahati was considered as favourite for the title and they
played superb football throughout the tournament to claim the trophy. Thomson Langthasa found the
target twice while Tinku Handique and Dwipen Chowdhury scored one each for the winners. Thinku
was adjudged as the best footballer of the final.
23 invited in badminton camp:
Guwahati: The Director of Sports and Youth Welfare Department has invited 23 boys and girls to
select the State team for the National School Games badminton championship for the age group U14, 17 and 19 to be held at Pune from December 13. the selected probables have been asked to
report at youth hostel on November 29.
Assam fight back in Ranji tie vs UP:
Guwahati: Assam fought back strongly in their Ranji Trophy tie against Uttar Pradesh by restricting
the hosts at 111 for 5 after being bowled out for 184 on a lively track at kanpur on Nov 25. R K
Yadav led Assam charge in putting pressure on Uttar Pradesh as he claimed three wickets giving
away just 41 runs.
Big win for Assam in VM Trophy:
Guwahati: A brilliant performance with bat and ball from skipper Swarupam Purkayastha helped
Assam to defeat Sikkim by a huge margin of an innings and 99 runs in the Vijay Merchant Trophy
Cricket Tournament match at the Maligaon Railway Stadium on Wednesday. Resuming at 161 for 6,
Assam, in the first innings, were bowled out for 256 with Swarupam scoring 89. Wicket Keeper
batsman Amjad Ali contributed 53. Sikkim bowler Vinod Gupta claimed a fiver giving away 75 runs.
Sikkim repeated their performance in their second innings and were bowled out for 98. Abu Naschim
Ahamed claimed six wickets for just 21 runs and Swarupam bagged two for 18 runs.
Krishna destroys Orissa, Assam win big in Polly Umrigar tie:
Guwahati: Assam registered a big win in the Polly Umrigar Cricket Tournament defeating Orissa by
an innings and 25 runs at Cuttack on Nov 24. Orissa were on the back foot on Nov 23 when they
could managed to score only 33 runs losing five wickets at the close of the day. However, they tried
best to recover but a fiery spell from Krishna claimed six wickets and Orissa were bowled out in their
second innings on 133. it may be mentioned here that Assam on Nov 23 finished their first innings at
300. Krishna Das had contributed 76.

Guwahati: Guwahati chess Association will organize a Guwahati-level prize money Open chess
tournament from Dec 5. The tournament, being organized to select the Guwahati team for the All
Assam chess Championship, will be held at the Manipuri Basti high School.
Guwahati humiliate Dhakuakhana:
Guwahati: Guwahati downed Dhakuakhana 9-0 in the U-21 Inter-district Football championship at
Sonari on Nov 22. Thomson Langthasa was brilliant in the field as he scored five goals with a
hattrick. Tinku Handique scored another three for Guwahati while Rajeswar Das was the other
scorer for the winners.
Sarupam to lead Assam in VM tie vs Sikkim:
Guwahati: Sarupam Purakayastha will lead the U-17 State cricket team against Sikkim in the first
match of the Vijay Merchant trophy, to be held at Maligaon, from November 23. The Assam Cricket
Association, on Nov 20, announced the team for the match. The squad: Saruoam Purkayastha
(caption), Sibsankar Roy (vice captain), Abu Nachim Ahamed, Amit Sinha, Krishanu Mazumder,
Debabrata Sen, Riki Bharali, Amzad Ali, Pritam Das, Sekharjyoti Barman, Kishore Das, Anup
Ghosh. Vikash Sarma and Sunil Ranjan Gogoi Dhiraj Das will be the coach of the side while
Chiranjib Langthasa will be manager.
Assam on verge of defeat:
Guwahati: Assam is on the verge of defeat against Punjab in the Ranji Trophy tie as the visitors
were reeling at 146 for seven in their second innings at Amritsar on Nov 18. Earlier, the visitors were
bundled out for 213 in their first innings. The touring side needs another 63 runs to put Punjab bat
again.
Tahid claims double crown:
Guwahati: Tahid Ali Talukdar claim double crown in the Badruddin Ahmed Inter-media Badminton
Championship which held at Kanaklata Stadium on Nov 18. in the single event Tahid of Pratidin
defeated Santanu Chakraborty of Doordarshan in the final 11-2, 11-4. In the doubles too Tahid
guided his side Pratidin to lift the trophy defeating Assam Tribune 3-0. meanwhile, the Aurabindo
Buragohain Inter-media Badminton Champion will be held at the Kanaklata Stadium on Nov 19.
Nagaon win RG Baruah Cricket tournament:
Guwahati: Nagaon emerged champion in the R G Baruah Cricket Tournament defeating N F
Railway by virtue of the first innings lead at Mangaldoi on Nov 18. in reply to Nagaon's first innings
total of 334, NF Railway bundled out for 106. Harsha Jain was the chief wrecker as he claimed
seven wickets for 37 runs. After forced to follow on NF Railway was 159 for 4 in their second innings
at the time of end of the match. Harsha Jain bagged the Man-of-the Match award.
Cooper test on Dec 5:
Guwahati: The cooper test for the provisional second and third class category scheduled to be held
on Nov 21 was postponed. It will now held in the SAI Complex on December 5.
Assam bag two points:
Guwahati: Assam bagged two points virtue of the first innings lead against Jharkhand in the Polly
Umrigarh Trophy which concluded on Nov 18 at Jharkhand. Host on Nov 18 declared their second
innings at 337 for 9 and Assam was 240 for 6 at the end of the days play.
Assam team for Amritsar:
Guwahati: Assam Ranji team left for Amritsar on Nov 12 where they will play their second match
from November 16. earlier, Assam made one change in the Ranji Trophy squad. RK Yadav has
been replaced by Chandan Raut. It may be mentioned here that ACA announced its team for the
next two matches against Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. Assam to play both the matches in Punjab and
Uttar Pradesh respectively.
State boxing camp from Nov 2:
Guwahati: A trial-cum-selection camp will start at Moran to select the state boxing squad for the
Sub-Junior National Boxing Championship to be held at Vilai from December second. Altogether, 28
talented boxers of the State has been invited in the camp which will begin on November 17.
GSA TT team named:
Guwahati: GSA on Nov 10 its team for the 52nd Inter-District and State Table Tennis Championship

ACA age test questioned:
Guwahati: The authenticity of the selection procedure of the age group Assam cricket team has
been questioned once again as there are allegations that some over-aged cricketers manage to
make it to the final selection camp, and even in the team also. This time, the ACA had done a strict
screening, including a medical test to verify the players' ages, to bar the over-aged cricketers from
making it to the list. It is surprising that even after the medical test, at least four over-aged players
make it to the camp, and one of them to the main team. An ACA source, on condition of anonymity,
said that although the selection procedure this year was very strict, there might be one or two cases
skipping the age bar. He, however, refused to divulge how that could happen. Some of the
guardians, on the other hand, felt that there must be an immediate inquiry into the allegations. They
questioned the validity of the medical test. Meanwhile, ACA secretary, Bikash Baruah said that the
association had selected the players on the basis of their medical test reports.
Rajesh Bora calls it quits:
Guwahati: A colourful cricket career came to an end on Nov 10 when Rajesh Bora, who had been a
great servant for Assam in the cricketing arena officially announced his retirement from the game.
After announcing his retirement from the game in a function, attended by his former teammates and
the present Ranji side, including a few members from Baroda, Bora said that he is now ready to
contributes to the development of the game in the State to the best of his capacity. Rajesh Bora is
considered to be one of the best player Assam has ever produced. During his prime, he was
considered to be an India prospect, but was somehow overlooked. The highest capped Ranji
cricketers of Assam, Bora started his Ranji career in the year 1983-84 against Bihar. He played 65
Ranji matches. For Assam, he played 56 times while he represented his employers- Railways- nine
times. He made 3,413 runs including a double century and four centuries.
Basfore to lead Assam for Polly Umrigar Trophy:
Guwahati: Raushan Basfore will lead Assam U-15 team in the first two matches of the Polly Umrigar
Trophy cricket tournament to be held at Jamshedpur and Cuttack respectively. Rajdeep Das will be
the vice captain of the team. Assam will face Jharkhand in the first match of the tournament at
Jamshedpur from November 17 while in second match Assam will play against Orrissa from
November 23.
Pratidin win media football:
Guwahati: Pratidin have lifted the inter-media football title defeating Janambhumi by a solitary goal
in the final held at the city SAI Complex on Nov 7. Rana Sharma scored the all important goal to seal
the match in favour of his side. It was the fourth goal for Sharma in the tournament which helped him
to take the highest goal scorer award of the tournament. Amal Das, the goalkeeper of Pratidin,
bagged the best player award of the tournament. Amar Asom received the fair play trophy.
Archana wins Iron Women title:
Guwahati: Archana Boro bagged the Iron Woman title in the second All Assam Open Prize money
Women's Weightlifting Championship held in the city SAI complex on Nov 7. around sixty
participants took in the championship which was held in seven categories.

Guwahati: The All Assam Ranking Table Tennis Tournament will be held at Sivasagar. The two day
tournament will begin on Nov 13 and will have eight events. Abasuddin Ahmed, secretary of the

Badan Saikia passes away, Subrajit to miss Ranji opener:
Guwahati: Assam will miss opener Subhrajeet Saikia in the Ranji Trophy opener versus Baroda,
starting November 5, due to the demise of his father Badan Saikia, who expired in New Delhi on Nov
2, after a brief illness. Badan Saikia, was a former cricket player for the State. A source from the
ACA on Nov 2 informed that, if required, Subrajeet Saikia will be replaced.
SAI to honour 133 sportsmen:
Guwahati: Sports Authority of India will award scholarship to the 133 sportsmen on November 5.
The SAI, NERSC in-charge Subhash Basumatari said that the award ceremony will be held at the
city SAI Complex.
Inter-media soccer from Nov 3:
Guwahati: The H N Baruah Inter-Media Football Championship will begin on Nov 3 at the city SAI
Complex. The inaugural match will be held between the Assam Tribune group and The Sentinel
group. Altogether, nine teams are taking part in the tournament. The final is scheduled to be held on
Nov 6.
GTC to take part in Hong Kong cricket meet:
Guwahati: Guwahati Town Club has been invited to participate in the Hong Kong Invitational Cricket
Tournament to be held at Hong Kong from Oct 28 to November 1. the team will be led by Devajit
Saikia, a former Ranji player, the release said.
Inter-media football from Nov 2:
Guwahati: The schedule of the H N Baruah Inter-media Football Tournament has been rearranged.
It will now be held from November two. The secretary of the Assam Sports Journalist Association
Bidyut Kalita said that the last date for the submission of entry has been fixed on Oct 30.
AP Blues advance in Bordoloi Trophy:
Guwahati: Assam Police Blues entered into the pre quarter-final of the Bordoloi Trophy Football
Championship defeating Royal Sports Club 3-0 in a match held at the Nehru Stadium Ground here
on Oct 8. The winner was leading 2-0 in the first half. Police team displayed a good display of
attacking football during the match and virtually toyed with the rival defence. Royal Sports were
beaten because of their lack of experience. Police Blues went into the lead in the early moments of
the match when Arun Daimary found the target in the fourth minute. Anuj Gogoi consolidated the
lead in the 29th minute while Arun Daimary once again put his name in the scorer list at the dying
minute of the match.
Brothers Union arriving on Oct 9:
Guwahati: A twenty six member Brothers Union football team will arrive in the city on Oct 9 to take
part in the Bordoloi Trophy Football Tournament, which is currently in progress at the Nehru
Stadium. The side, accompanied by coach Syed Nayeemuddin, does not have any foreign
footballers but it has been learnt that a couple of footballers from the national squad may come with
the team. The Gauhati Sports Association (GSA) Binoy Medhi said that although there were lot of
procedural hurdles in roping in a foreign team from the neighbouring country. It may be mentioned
here that Brothers Union is the National League and Federation Cup champion team of Bangladesh
and they will start their campaign in the Bordoloi Trophy on Oct 11 which will be a quarter-final
match. Meanwhile, the GSA has blamed AIFF and IFA for their inability to bring any top side from
Kolkata and other States. Medhi said, "we invited teams like Mohun Bagan, Bengal Mumbai, Fransa
and some other top sides of the country. They had even agreed to take part in the tournament but
the AIFF announced the scheduling of Santosh Trophy, Airlines Gold Cup at the last moment and
put spanner on our works." It is only for these tournament that the top sides of the country, even
after giving their consent had to withdraw at the last moment. Meanwhile, Punjab Police has arrived
in the city to take part in the tournament and they will been in action on Oct 9 in a match against
Guwahati League runners-up ASEB. In another match on Oct 9, NF Railway will take on Nagaland
Police.
Brothers Union arriving on Oct 9:
Guwahati: Brothers Union, the Dhaka league champion side, will arrive in the city on Oct 9 to take
part in the Bordoloi trophy Football Tournament, currently in progress here in Guwahati and Mirza.
The secretary of the Gauhati Sports Association (GSA) Binoy Medhi said that the side will start from
Dhaka on October 8 and will reach the city next day. However, the woes of the premier tournament
are not over yet. Bengal Mumbai and Fransa have pulled out of the tournament as most of their
players are busy in the Santosh Trophy preparatory camps for their respective States. Meanwhile,
the tournament will begin again on Oct 6 after a day's gap, due to North-east bandh, in Mirza and
Guwahati simultaneously. Mohun Bagan- SAIL Football Academy will play against SAIL at Mirza
while Royal Sports will take on Kokrajhar in the other match, which will be held in the city.
Baruah elected VP of national kho kho body:
Guwahati: The president of the Assam Kho-Kho Association Rajib Prakash Barua was elected as
the vice president of the Kho Kho Federation of India(KKFI) in the recently concluded annual general
meeting of the Association. Baruah, who is also the president of the East Zone Kho Kho Association,
was elected to vice president's post of the parent body unanimously. The general secretary of the
Assam Kho Kho Association Aftab Hussain was also included as a member of the central executive
committee in the KKFI.
I-Day cup final on Oct 6, OIL start favourite:
Guwahati: OIL starts as the favourite against Kidderpore in the final of the 56 th Independence Cup
Football Tournament which will be held in the Nurul Amin Stadium at Nagaon on Oct 6. It is the third
consecutive appearance of OIL in the final of this tournament. The way OIL have played throughout
the tournament, one can assume that it will be third time lucky. In the previous two occasions, OIL
could finish runners-up only. Their form and fortunes have changed since Jamshed Nassiri took over
as coach. They also have a psychological advantage of having drubbed Kidderpore 4-0 in their
league match.

Guwahati: George Telegraph of Kolkata have entered the semi final of the Daoharu Gold Cup
football Tournament beating South Eastern Railway, Jharkhand 4-0 at the Dotma Mini stadium.
Mahesh Sarkar drew the first blood for the winners in the 32 nd minute Sandodosia Tho scored the
next two in the 50th and 67th minute of the match. In the dying minutes, Srikanta Das scored the
fourth goal to seal it for George Telegraph. On Oct 6, Central Railway, Bhopal will take on FCI,
Guwahati.
Kamal Das in selection panel for jr cricketers:
Guwahati: Former Ranji cricketer Kamal Das has been reappointed as one of the selectors of the
junior Indian cricket team. The announcement to this effect was made in Kolkata on September 30.
An ACA source said that several committee of the Board were constituted on September 30. Das
was included in the junior selection committee from the Eastern region which would be headed by
former test cricketer Parvin Amre. The other members of the committee are Anurag Thakur, K
Jairam, and Sanjeev Rao. It may be mentioned here that Das had earlier represented Assam in the
same capacity. Meanwhile the tenure of vice-president Goutam Ray, who was also the president of
the ACA, has come to an end. He was replaced by Rajiv Shukla.
Withdrawal woes on in Bordoloi Trophy:
Guwahati: Kokrajhar XI have shown their inability to take part in the Bordoloi Trophy tournament
thereby plunging into chaos the schedule of the tournament. It is worth mentioning here that they
were slated to play the inaugural match of the tournament which was to get under way on Oct 2 at
Nehru Stadium. As per the earlier fixture, the inaugural match was scheduled to be held between
FCI and Kokrajhar. According to the revised schedule, Williamson Magor will play FCI in the
inaugural tie.
Brothers Union to play in Bordoloi Trophy, seeded directly into last 8:
Guwahati: Some good news finally for the city fans. Brothers Union, the Dhaka league champions
will participate in the forthcoming Bordoloi Trophy Football Championship which will begin here on
October two. The club have given their consent to take part in the premier football championship of
the Northeast. They will arrive in with full strength. Disclosing the new development, the GSA
secretary Binoy Medhi said that parleys with a few of the top teams were on in the last forthnight or
so and the GSA succeed in roping Brothers Union. Although, a few formalities are to be worked out,
but the GSA were confident that they were minor hitches and there was no roadblock whatsoever.
Medhi also added that the side will play its first match from the quarter final stage. Apart from
Brothers' Union, a couple of well-balanced side like Bengal Mumbai, Fransa and TFA will also be
seen in this year edition of the Bordoloi Trophy.
FCI, City Police share points:
Guwahati: FCI and City Police shared points in the A Division Football League as their match ended
in a 2-2 draw at the Nehru Stadium on Sept 29. Raju Brahma and Utpal Das scored for FCI while
Manoj Ahamed and Rajeswar Das were the scorers for City Police.
Pradeep Brahma named assistant coach for Santosh Trophy:
Guwahati: AFA has invited Pradeep Brahma to take charge as the assistant coach of the State team
which will take part in the Santosh Trophy Football Tournament to be held in Delhi from October 14.
AFA was forced to ask Bramha to take charge as Subimal Dhar, the first choice for the post
informed the Association that he couldn't take charge of the team following a personal problem.
Meanwhile. Eight players attended the Santosh Trophy camp which was got under way in the city on
Sept 27. The secretary of the AFA Kedar Mour said that other footballers, barring some from ASEB
and OIL, who are busy in the Independence Cup, are expected to join the camp shortly. It may be
mentioned here that matches of the Assam's group have been rescheduled and Assam will start its
campaign on October 17 instead of October 14 with a match against Gujarat. Assam will play its
other group matches on October 19 and 21 against Delhi and Madhya Pradesh respectively.
NF Rly win Nurul Amin Trophy:
Guwahati: NF Rly have lifted the Nurul Amin Trophy Cricket title defeating Guwahati by virtue of first
innings lead. Guwahati fought hard on the final day but failed to prevent the Railway men from taking
the first innings lead. NF Rly started their first innings from 113 for two but were bowled out for 194.

Guwahati: Like previous year, this year, too, Bud Cricket Club will felicitate some former Ranji
cricketers who represented Assam between 1975-1980. the felicitation programme will be held on

president of Bud Cricket Club, Shantanu Bharali said that this time they have decided to felicitate

Guwahati: NF Railway were 113 for 2 at the end of the rain-hit second day of the Nurul Amin Cricket
Trophy final on Sept 24 being played at the Nehru Stadium. Only 90 minutes of play was possible
and the Railwaymen extended their score from 51 without loss to Rs 113 for 2, losing both the
openers Parag Das and Parvez Aziz. Gautam Dutta and Bitap Mahanta shared both wickets. Brief

the girls section, Kaveri Phukan beat Prangana Barua of Dibrugarh 11-7, 11-8.
AFA in a quandary:
Guwahati: With the TINA (there is no alternative) syndrome at work, the Assam Football Association
(AFA) has decided to allow the probables of the Santosh Trophy camp to continue their club duty but
for two major football tournaments only- Independence Day Cup and Bordoloi Trophy. The sudden
decision by All India Football Federation to organise the Santosh Trophy Football Trophy has
created a problem of sorts for the Assam Football Association as there is hardly any time left for
preparation. On the other hand, if the selected footballers of the camp are not allowed to represent
their clubs then these tournaments will suffer. The secretary of Assam Football association Kedar
Mour said," keeping in mind the interest of the organisers of both the tournaments, we have decided
to allow the probables to play for their respective clubs. But this permission is only for Independence
Cup and the Bordoloi Trophy". He, however, said that players have to first register themselves at the
camp before they are allowed to go. He also hinted that if any footballer, selected for the State team
cannot accompany the side during the teams departure, due to his club assignment in the above
mention tournament, AFA will make alternative arrangement for the footballer.
NF Rly in drivers seat:
NF Railway have taken control of the final of the Nurul Amin Cricket Trophy at the Nehru Stadium
ground here on Sept 24. Electing to bat first, Guwahati were bundled out for a paltry 171 runs thanks
to some accurate bowling from Zaved Zaman (3-22) and Gyan Prakash (4-48). In reply, NF Railway
were 51 for no loss at the end of the day's play.

Guwahati: The executive committee meeting of the Assam Table Tennis Association will be held on
September 26 at Kohra in Kaziranga. The secretary of the Assam Table Tennis Association Abbas

Guwahati: Mohun Bagan Sail Football Academy advanced to the next round of the Independence
Cup Football Tournament defeating NFRSC in sudden death 4-3 at Nagaon on Sept 23. The match
went into the sudden death after both the sides failed to score any goal in the regulation time as well
as in the extra time. The sides were tied 3-3 in the penalty shoot out. In the sudden death, Safar
Sadar scored the important goal to take the Academy side into the next round. On Sept 24, Radial

Guwahati: The Assam Football Association on Sept 22 re appointed Ganesh Rai as the chief coach
of the senior state team for the coming Santosh Trophy football championship to be held at Delhi in
the next month. Subimal Dhar from Silchar has been appointed as the deputy coach. The secretary
of the Assam Football Association Kedar Mour said that the preparation camp for the tournament will
begin in the city from September 27. Meanwhile Assam Football Association on Sept 22 released
the name of the 39 probables who have been invited to attend the Santosh Trophy camp.
Nurul Amin Trophy final on Sept 23:
Guwahati: The final match of the Nurul Amin Cricket tournament will begin at the Nehru Stadium on
Sept 23. Guwahati will play against NF Rly in the final which will be a three-day affair. It may be
mentioned here that Guwahati on the way to the final defeated Tinsukia while NF Rly on Sept 21
beat Nagaon in the other semi final by virtue of the first innings lead.
Kaveri to meet Prangana in final:
Guwahati: Kaveri Phukan of Sivsagar will take on Prangana Barua of Dibrugarh in the final of the U10 Girls event of the Hiteswar Saikia All Assam Open Badminton Championship which is currently in
progress at the Kanaklata Stadium. In the semi final Kaveri defeated Mayuri Phukan of Tinsukia 110, 11-2 while Prangana beat Meghna Dutta of Jorhat 11-7, 11-9. The boys U-10 final will be held
between Rana Barua and Mausam Bora. Both the finalists hail from Sivasagar. Mausam defeated
Hemanga Kashyap of Dibrugarh in a one sided match 15-0, 15-3 while Rana won against Partha
Gogoi of Jorhat 15-4, 15-6.
Assam in easy group in Santosh Trophy:
Guwahati: Assam is in a comparatively easy group in the Santosh Trophy Football Tournament
which will finally get under way at Delhi in the middle of October. Assam is placed in cluster two
along with Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and hosts Delhi. The joint secretary of the AFA Tapan Hazarika
informed that Assam will start its campaign in the Championship on October 14 with the match
against Gujarat. Assam will play its remaining two matches in the Cluster on October 17 and
October 21 against Madhya Pradesh and Delhi respectively. Hazarika also added that the
preparation camp for the tournament will in all probability begin on September 25.
Assam out of reckoning:
Guwahati: Assam is virtually out of reckoning in the virtually out of reckoning in the Mir Iqbal Sub
Junior National Football tournament as they drew their third match against Nagaland on Sept 17 at
Dharmanagar. The match ended in a 1-1 draw which means Assam have thus far collected just four

Amin stadium at Nagaon. Former footballer Rajen Sharma will inaugurate the tournament where the
two former footballers Narahari Deka and ghana Basumatary will be felicitated. The secretary of the
Nagaon Sports Association Pradip Hazarika said that Williamson Magor will play against local side
Sanjibani Samaj in the inaugural tie. Hazarika said that all the top sides of the region will take part in
the championship. A couple of including Mohammedan A C and Calcutta Custom have also given
their consent to take part in the championship.
Nurul Amin cricket resumes on Sept 20:
Guwahati: The jinxed Nurul Amin Cricket tournament will finally resume on Sept 20 when NF
Railway take on Nagaon in the second semi final to be held at the Nehru stadium. The ACA has
rescheduled the fixture and it will meet Guwahati from September 23 at the same venue. It may be
mentioned here that in the first semifinal Guwahati had defeated Tinsukia. Parag Das will lead the
Railway team.
Bagan turns town GSA request, Bordoloi Trophy from Oct 2:
Guwahati: Mohun Bagan on Sept 19 turned down the request of GSA to take part in the Bordoloi
Trophy Football Tournament, which now means that there will not be any major team from the
maidan taking part in the meet. The GSA secretary Binoy Medhi on Sept 19 informed that due to
Airlines Gold Cup, which will be played at the same time, Bagan had decided not to take part in the
Bordoloi Trophy. However Bengal Mumbai Club and Fransa from Goa will be the two attraction for
this year's edition. Meanwhile, the inaugural date of the tournament has been reschedule to October
2. The final will be held on October 16. Medhi also said that some of the matches will be held in
Mirza.
South Point win Inter-school cricket:
Guwahati: South Point chool lifted the Golap Hazarika Inter-School Cricket title defeating Srimanta
Sankar Academy by five wickets in the final played at the Dispur Ground on Sept 19. Batting first,
Srimanta Sankar Academy scored 131. A fine batting from man of the match Arpan Das (36) helped
South Point to win the match by losing just five wickets. The secretary of ACA Bikash Barua was the
chief guest in the closing function. Kankan Bharali of South Point School was adjudged the man of
the tournament.
Assam beat Manipur:
Guwahati: Assam registered first win in the Sub-Junior National Mir Iqbal Football Trophy (NE Zone)
defeating favourite Manipur 2-1 at Dharmanagar on Sept 14. It was the second match for Assam in
the tournament and they played some superb football throughout the match. Paigam Rongmai and
Jyotish Basumatari scored the goals for the winning side. It may be mentioned here that in the first
match Assam lost to host Tripura by a solitary goal.
Bagan will not participate in Independence Cup:
Guwahati: Kolkata-based soccer giant Mohun Bagan will not participate in the coming Independence
Cup. According to the organisers of the tournament the Bagan side has expressed their inability to
take part in the tournament which will get under way on Sept 20 at Nagaon. Pradip Hazarika,
secretary of the Nagaon Sports Association said, "Mohun Bagan officials recently informed that
during the time of the Independence Cup the team will be engaged in other major tournaments. The
last week of October is the only free period for the Bagan team. So we have decided to start the
tournament without any major side from Kolkata". According to sources Bagan side may not seen in
this years.
A Div cricket from last week of October:
Guwahati: The GSA will organise the A Division Cricket League in the last week of October while the
B Division League will begin in the last part of November. Informing this to media the cricket
secretary of the GSA Jehirul Haque said that players registration for both the leagues will be
completed within September 25.
FCI thrash Royal sports:
Guwahati: FCI thrashed Royal Sports 5-1 in the Sekhar Goswami A division Football league held at
the Nehru Stadium here on Sept 14. Utpal Das scored two goals while Kabul Rabha. David Gayari
and Nayan Wary scored a goal each for the winners. Royal returned one through Maniram Singh. In
the other match of the day in SAI defeated Rising Eleven 2-0. Manikanta Brahma and Methew
Thangam scored the goals for SAI.
DPS beat South Point:
Guwahati: Delhi Public School and South Point School registered win in the Golap Hazarika (U-14)
Inter School Cricket championship which is currently in progress at Dispur playground. Delhi Public
School defeated Little Flower School by 39 runs while South Points won by eight wickets against
Don Bosco.
Kamrup District Bodybuilding Championship held:
Guwahati: Manoj Kr Boro of Guwahati won the Mr Kamrup 2004 (champion of the champion) title
while Dilip Kr Deuri received the runners-up title and JA Kazi lifted the Master Kamrup' 2004 title of
the 1st Kamrup district Bodybuilding Championship' 2004 held on September 11 at Swahid Bhawan,
Mirza under the banner of association of Body Builders' Kamrup.
Biswanath lift soccer title:
Guwahati: Biswanath Chariali emerged champion in the Junior Inter-district Football Championship
which concluded at Dhakuakhana on Sept 11. In the final, Biswanath Chariali defeated Silchar via a
tiebreaker 9-8. The match ended in a 1-1 draw in the schedule time. It was Biswanath Chariali who
went into the lead in the 26th minute of the match when Prasanta Choudhury put the ball in Silchar's
net. Silchar got the equalizer in the 73rd minute of the match through Bimal Tanti. Suraj Sonar of
Biswanath Chariali was adjudged as the Best Player of the tournament.
Disney Land up:
Guwahati: Disney Land won the inaugural match by 44 runs against Anand Academy in the first
Golap Hazarika Inter-School Prize Money Cricket tournament (U-14) which got under way on Sept
11 at Dispur play ground. Altogether 16 teams are taking part in the championship. Former Ranji
player Nilotpal Goswami was the chief guest in the inaugural function.
City Police, Rising share points:
Guwahati: City Police and rising Eleven today shared points in the Sekhar Goswami A Division
Football League, which ended in a goalless draw. After a day's gap, the League once again
resumed on Sept 11. Both the side tried to attack but their forwards were short of the target. In 12 th
September's match Rajbari will take on FCI.
Bordoloi Trophy from Oct 1:
Guwahati: The next edition of Bordoloi Trophy will begin on October one. Although, it was previously
decided to start the tournament in the last part of September, but later the decision was changed.
Disclosing the date, the secretary of GSA Binoy Medhi said that almost all the top side of the Northeast have given their consent to take part in the championship. Fransa, from Goa, has also
confirmed their participation in the tournament. Talks with Mohun Bagan is still on, and the GSA has
said that a surprise may be in store for city soccer fans.
Assam to leave on Sept 9 for U-16 soccer qualifiers:
Guwahati: Assam will leave for Dharmanagar on Sept 9 to take part in the 27 th sub Junior (U-16)
Natioanl Football championship for the Mir Iqbal Trophy (North-east zone qualifying round) which will
begin on September 12. five teams from the region- Assam, Manipur, Tripura, Nagaland and
Arunachal Pradesh will contest in the tournament, form where only a single team will qualify for the
main round. Assam will start its campaign on the inaugural day with a match against host Tripura.
Meanwhile, the AFA on September 8 announced its 20-member team which will take part in the
tournament. Bidhan Das will accompany the team as a coach while Mintu Medhi will be the manager
of side.
Archana wins silver in Natl Weightlifting:
Guwahati: Archana Boro gave Assam its first silver medal in the Sub-Junior National Weightlifting
Championship which is currently in progress at Mumbai. Archana won the medal in the 63kg weight
category lifting 72.5kg in snatch and 87.5 in the jerk event.
CBSE basketball in city:
Guwahati: City-based Hindustani Kendriya Vidyalaya will host the CBSE Guwahati region, cluster-I
Interschool Basketball Tournament (under-19years) scheduled to begin on Sept 9. The four-day
tournament will be inaugurated by Kamrup (M) DC AK Absar Hazarika. Altogether 15 teams from the
north-eastern states besides Sikkim will participate in the meet. The matches will be held
simultaneously in the school court as well as the PHE court in Hengrabari.
Assam bag 8 medals in National Wushu:
Guwahati: The Assam Wushe team bagged a rich haul of eight medals in the recently concluded
13th National Wushu championships was held at Tata Nagar, Jharkhand from Sept 1 to 4.
Tingkhang wins first-ever eves' soccer league title:
Guwahati: Tingkhang Sports Association have won the Dibrugarh district Women's football
championships beating Duliajan Sports Association 1-0 in a keenly-fought encounter here at the
Chowkhidingee play ground here in Dibrugarh. It is worth mentioning here that this was the first ever
eves' soccer league any where in the State. In total, eight teams took part in the championships. The
final as expected was widely attended by the spectators. Honours in the first half was equally
shared, but Suchenda Jayaware scored the match winner for the Tingkhang team to bag a historic
title.
Assam's fate hangs on toss:
Guwahati: The tie between in the Moin-ud-doullah Trophy is heading for a toss-decider as not even
a single ball could be bowled on Sept 5 due to poor ground condition. The tournament, in progress
at Hyderabad, has been badly hampered due to heavy rains. Assam team manager, Bishnuram
Nunisha, on Sept 5 informed that in all probability, the fate of the match will now be decided by toss.
In case of lady luck smiling on Assam, its next match will be on September 8.
Nurul Amin cricket rescheduled again:
Guwahati: The fixture for the remaining matches of Nurul Amin Cricket Tournament has been
rescheduled. The second semi final of the tournament will now be held on September 20-21 at the
Nehru Stadium between Nagaon and NF Railway. The final is slated on September 23-25.
Pulakesh wins carom title:
Guwahati: Pulakesh Roy emerged champion in the single's event of the Power Grid
Regional Carrom Championship, which concluded on Sept 3 at the ABITA Stadium. In
the final, Pulakesh defeated A I Nathan of Southern region duo of G Narashima Rao and
P Nagesh. They defeated S Upali and H G Katkar of western Region 25-14, 25-10.
Meanwhile, B K Dey and B K Das of the North East region became champion in the
bridge event. The team of A Kumar and B Das became second best team in the
championship.
Guwahati win sub-junior soccer:
Guwahati: Guwahati lifted the Sub-Junior Inter-district Football title defeating Kokrajhar
3-1 in the final held at Barama of Nalbari district on Sept 1. Biswajit Daimary (2) and
Ranjit Rabha scored for the winners. Bilifung Narzary reduced the margin for Kokrajhar.
Rajesh Das of Guwahati was adjudged as the best player of the final.
Power Grid carrom, bridge begin:
Guwahati: The all India Power Grid Inter-regional Carrom and Bridge Championship got
under way on Sept 1 at the Kanaklata Indoor Stadium. The general manager of the
North East Power Grid S K Sinha inaugurated the tournament. In the singles event of
carrom, Pulakesh Roy of NE region entered the final defeating S K Nair 25-2, 25-4.
