Intermediate Grade 9 Task A2
Transcript
You will hear a radio interview with Faïza Guène, a young writer, about her work.
Listen to the interview and look at the questions. Choose the correct answer, a, b or
c, by putting a tick in the box
You will hear the recording twice. The task begins with one example.
You now have 15 seconds to read the questions.
Example:
M:
Faïza, you became an author at a very young age!
F:
I am only 19, but my first poem was published when I was thirteen, so I’ve
been an author for 6 years!
Question 1
M:
And you’ve just published your first novel! Tell me, why have you decided to
write a novel?
F:
Well, I’ve always know that I wanted to be an author, but I never thought I
would succeed – I wanted to write, that was it.
Question 2
M:
How do you explain the success of your book?
F:
Firstly, it talks about life in the suburbs – it’s a contemporary theme. But I
think it’s especially because the main character is a girl. Normally, stories about the
suburbs are about boys’ issues.
Question 3
M:
Why did you write this story? Is it your story?
F:
I wasn’t interested in writing a story about my life. Also, none of my
characters really exist, so even if certain details are true, like my mother learning to
read at the age of 40. I had fun transforming real anecdotes.
Question 4
M:
How did the people from your area react?
F:
Some people felt I used the street language too much – it’s true, I tried to
use the typical language of young people living in the suburbs. However, many
people recognised themselves in my characters and were pleased that I’d spoken
about them in the book.
Question 5
M:
Which aspect of the book is your favourite?

2
F:
For me, it’s about encouraging young people not to lose hope: at the start I
describe a hard world, shut down, without hope. And then, gradually, things get
better, doors start to open – it is possible to find a way out!
