Packing Weekend Bags
1.
Prep
a. Print out Inventory List and compare listed items pulled items.
b. Make sure the correct # of each item has been pulled.
c. Ask a warehouse staff member or Rob to set up to palettes in Shopping
Area. Boxes should be placed with heavy items on one end.
d. Place bags near the heavy side of the row of palettes. This will be the
bagging station.
e. Place Silgan boxes near the other end with tape guns.
f. Place scissors near boxes needing to be opened.
g. Make sure that you have signs that read: Weekend Bags DATE printed.
Print these on colored paper.

Volunteer orientation:
a. Weekend Bags is part of our Food For Kids program and distributes
approx. 1,000 5-7 pound bags of shelf-stable food to low-income children
every Friday. These bags will go out next week to kids in DC, VA & MD.
b. What we will do is an assembly line production of items. We’ll have
volunteers at different stations.

Volunteer Roles:
a. 5 volunteers to ready the bags for use. All bags must be double bagged.
b. 4 volunteers to double check each finished bag for missing or extra items.
c. 6 volunteers to run bags.
d. 2-3 volunteers to make boxes.
e. 2-3 volunteers to pack finished bags in Silgan Boxes.
f. All remaining volunteers should pack the bags. There should be AT
LEAST 1 volunteer per item.

Operations:
a. Start each bag by having the first volunteer put the heaviest item in
walking down the row.
b. Next the bags will be given to the checkers and they will count to make
sure the correct # of items are in each bag. Then, the double-checkers will
tie the bag in a knot.
c. Those placing the bags in the boxes will place FIVE bags in each box.
Boxes are stacked 8 to a row on a palette, four rows high. When the
palette has 32 boxes, wrap them and place a Weekend Bags sign on the
palette.

That’s it! Make sure to have volunteers recycle & sweep up after.
