Patterns Intern: Hind Osman Ahmad Mentor teacher: Samira Grade level: 1st grade. Date: 12/03/2008 # of students: 25 Time Frame: 55 min Instructional Objective: Students will be able to: ✸ Identify and demonstrate the patterns knowledge with 95% accuracy ✸ Describe orally the repeating patterns. ✸ Extend the repeating patterns made from shapes with 85% accuracy. Qatar Curriculum Standard: 7.2 describe, extend or complete repeating patterns made from shapes, according to shapes, size, position or colour. Materials: ✣ Plastic shapes. ✣ Bag. ✣ Work sheets. ✣ Calendar. ✣ String. ✣ Scissors. ✣ Gum. ✣ Flash card. ✣ Blocks. Resources: Houghton Mifflin Math. Chapter 1 lesson 6 p 10J Infant Simmering Activities p59. TEACHING PROCEDURE: Activating Prior knowledge / Focus: After the daily routine: The teacher will put some shapes in side the bag (square, circle, triangle, and rectangle). Then the teacher chooses four students to take shapes (each student takes one shape). The students should identify the name of the shape and how many sides and angles it has. Then the teacher asks all the students to sit in a line. The first student stands, the second student stays sitting, the third student stands. The teacher asks the students what happen when some students are stand and other are stay sitting. Then the teacher says this repetition we call it pattern, so today we will learn about the patterns, describe our patterns, and extend repeating patterns made from shapes. Teacher Strategies: First, using the shapes: the teacher will divide the class in to group of six. The teacher will give each group some shape (circles, squares, rectangles and triangles) tell them we will make many patterns by using these shapes. Next she ask the first group to stick one shape on the board (circle), the second group stick another shape (rectangle). The teacher asks student to repeat that (circle, rectangle, circle, and rectangle) and she tell them we call that repeating unit. The teacher will use flash card to introduce the ward (repeating unit) also she explain the meaning of the word. The teacher shows the students where the pattern starts, and where it ends. Then she tell them to describe this pattern we can say circle, rectangle while she pointing. The teacher will give the students sheet # 1and should be work in pairs. In this sheet she gives the students many patterns to complete and also she situates two choices for the students to circle the shape that likely come next. The teacher should be model the students. Second, the teacher will give each student blocks of the same shape but different colors. After that the teacher asks the students to make a pattern of small and large (triangle). Then ask them to describe the pattern (made up of triangle, repeats–small, large, small, large). Third, the teacher will stick some drawing shapes on the string. Then she chooses two students to hold the string. The teacher made many patterns for example (square and triangle or rectangle and circle or circle, triangle, and square). The teacher covers the pattern on the string except the first unit. Then she asks the students to predict what the next is? After this game the teacher will give the students sheet # 2. She tells the students: to work in groups. Then the teacher tell them: each group has 6 students so in each group I need: Thinker student, one helper student, two cutters students and two student gluers. The students should use scissors and glue. To find the missing shape that will complete each pattern. Then cut out the shape at the bottom of the page and glue it in the missing space. The teacher will model the students. The teacher will use calendar to show the students the patterns in daily life (days of the week). Student Activities: Some students should stick some shapes on the board according what their teacher said. First activity, pairs work: The students have many patterns and have choices. The students should circle the correct shapes to complete the patterns. Sheet # 1 Second activity, individual work: the students should complete the patterns according to their colors (blocks) the students may put two colors for example (red and yellow or green and blue) to make patterns. Two students should hold the string and other students should answer the questions that teacher will say. For example the teacher asks the students to complete the pattern (square and triangle) the students should answer her (square and triangle, square and triangle, square and triangle). Third activity, work: the students should work cooperatively to find the missing shape that will complete each pattern. Then cut out the shape at the bottom of the page and glue it in the missing space Sheet # 2. In each group there is: Thinker student, one helper student, two cutters students and two student gluers. The students should use scissors and glue. Modifications/ Differentiation: The students who need more help, the teacher give the students some shapes (circles, squares, triangles, and rectangle). She starts the patterns for example (circle and triangle, circle and triangle) then the teacher encourages the students to complete the pattern. Lesson extension: The high level students if they have finished their work earlier they will go to the learning center. In the learning center I have one activity to high level students. In this activity the students should make their own caterpillar. They have 9 circles in three different colors (red, blue, and green), also they have 18 rectangles in three different colors (red, blue, and green) the students should stick the circles in while paper (A3) should start from the left to right. Stick the first circle and the next one should be on the right adage of the first one and the third one on the right adage of the second one etc. the student should stick the 9 circles (the ninth one should be the face of caterpillar) and 18 rectangles. Closure: At the end, the teacher will remind the students that we learned today Identified and demonstrated the patterns, describe orally the repeating patterns, and we extend the repeating patterns made from shapes. The teacher will ask the students while she pointing for the pattern in the board where the pattern starts? Where it end? The teacher tells the student: next lesson we will learn how to create patterns. Assessment: For assessment the teacher will give the students work sheet # 3 as a home work to assess them by answer it correctly. Also during the lesson activities 1,2 the teacher will assess the students. Name………………………………….. Date………………… Work sheet # 1 Look at the patterns.
