The Lancashire Sinfonietta is delighted to launch their first collaboration Lancashire Music Service and Tuned-In (www.tunedin.org) in a ground breaking approach to curriculum teaching at Key Stage 2: “Carnival of the Animals” by Camille Saint Saens. CD Roms, Audio disc & Online KS2 teaching resources. Lancashire’s professional orchestra went into the recording studio in May 2007, directed by the Hallé’s leader, Lyn Fletcher, to record the famous work. These musical beginnings have blossomed in the expert hands of the team at Tuned-In into one of the most progressive and comprehensive cross-curricular resources available in the UK. The Sinfonietta offers professional workshops and projects, which are of a national calibre. Supported by extraordinarily detailed teaching resources, the Carnival projects offer a unique blend of live music and ICT in your own classroom. The Carnival resource is truly brought to life by our amazing musicians and offers students a holistic learning experience, which is entertaining, interesting and thought provoking. Students rapidly develop better communication skills, teamwork, confidence and will far exceed their own expectations. Online Mastercasts: Podcasts & web-conferencing (via CLEO) of masterclasses and discussions available to all Tuned-In subscribers. 4. Carnival Art Challenge: Artwork task setting (display at Guildhall Performance). 5. “Carnival of the Animals” – Guildhall Performance (17.3.08) Spectacular interactive Schools Concert featuring the Lancashire Sinfonietta with the whole Carnival team – a dazzling conclusion and opportunity for all participants to join the massive Carnival celebration together. 6. Live Projects: 4 dynamic live workshops will culminate in a classroom/school performance followed by a visit to the +2,000 seater Guildhall in PRESTON for a spectacular live show of Carnival of the Animals. A January Teacher INSET will familiarise everyone with the workshops and teachers will help create their own grooves/beats with the musicians. Monkey Beat Rhythm/ Pulse based Animal Workshops Movement & music based warm up to live music. Demonstration of percussion instruments by Sinfonietta musicians. Percussion tutorial (how to play class instruments like a pro) Pulse/ rhythm games. Composing/ writing: students create a vocal piece/ choral speaking/ rapping over the Monkey Beat. Learn the Introduction & March of the Lion. This project can also involve Danni Dee, rap artist. Funky Pig: Groove based Animal Workshops Movement & music based warm up to live music. Demonstration of instruments by Sinfonietta musicians. Vocal tutorial (how to use their voices like orchestral instruments) Introduction to improvisation: layering simple patterns over the Funky Pig groove. Pulse/ rhythm games. Improvisation: smaller groups devise their own grooves and improvise patterns above them – with voices or instruments. Learn the Introduction & March of the Lion. This project can also involve Vinata Godbole, Classical Indian & Bollywood dancer. 3 1. Live Projects cont... Students will learn about the following: Responding to signals: conductor and students “conduct” the class like an orchestra. Team/ensemble skills (discipline, communication, listening, teamwork). What a performance involves. All of the above in relation to the Carnival CD Rom, audio disc and online materials. Performances/Sharing our work: Schools will share their work via email (sound recordings will be made of the sessions and files can be exchanged). Class Performance: the final workshop provides a sharing opportunity with students, teachers and parents. Guildhall Performance: All schools will participate in the giant Carnival at Preston Guildhall, where they will perform alongside up to 2,000 students who have also been working with the Carnival CD Rom and will hear the Carnival of the Animals live with the Lancashire Sinfonietta. 4 2. Live Workshops: Monkey Beat or Funky Pig can also be delivered as a 1-session workshop. The same fantastic musicians will deliver a full morning of activities and will prepare the class for material, which will be shared at the Guildhall Performance. Also involves task setting for making props and instruments for the Guildhall performance. 3. Online Mastercasts: Podcasts & web-conferencing (via CLEO) of masterclasses and discussions available to all Tuned-In subscribers. Online masterclasses (or Mastercasts/ Podcasts) will be available, to include: Percussion tutorials: Sinfonietta percussion guru and Principal Timpanist of the BBC Philharmonic, Paul Turner, demonstrates how to get the most out of your classroom percussion instruments. Practice makes Perfect: Our amazing pianists demonstrate HOW to practice and show the benefits, whether it’s a musical instrument or controlling a football, the same principles apply... Our Introduction and March of the Lion will be available as a podcast and will teach your class the Theme Tune for the Carnival performance at the Guildhall. 5 4. Carnival Art Challenge: Guildhall 17 March 2008: Our spectacular Carnival at the Preston Guildhall will have scenery provided by schools participating in the project. We will also request classes prepare props in advance for our fully interactive concert. Scenery for Schools: Giant mdf cutouts of animal heads will be sent to schools in Cumbria & Lancashire for decoration. Classes can choose their own style and materials and the animals will be collected the week before the performance. Instrument Making: Templates and instructions for making jungle instruments will be emailed to schools attending the Guildhall concert. These instruments will feature in the final performance. Props Making: Templates and instructions for making animal props will be emailed to schools attending the Guildhall concert. The students in the final performance will wear these. 6 5. “Carnival of the Animals” – Guildhall Performance (17.3.08) Spectacular interactive Schools Concert featuring the Lancashire Sinfonietta with the whole Carnival team – a magnificent conclusion to your projects and an opportunity for all participants to join the massive Carnival celebration together. PRESTON, Guildhall Mon.17th March 2008, 1.30pm “Carnival of the Animals” (Interactive Schools Concert) An unmissable experience! This huge Carnival celebration will feature a dazzling array of artists including the flamboyant African drummers Zozo & Sam, Rap artist Danni Dee, the vibrant Indian dancer Vinata Godbole and the amazing orchestral musicians of the Lancashire Sinfonietta. This fully interactive concert gives schools the chance to make instruments and props to bring to join in the music-making.
