Faculty Plan of Support
Over the past two years, I have had [name of student] in my classes, have
mentored and supervised her as a [course] TA, and been serving as co-chair of her thesis
committee. She has frequently consulted me for advice concerning both educational and
professional development concerns, and I have watched with delight as she has grown in
confidence and ability as a teacher scholar.
As she continues to pursue her love for teaching and learning in a doctoral
program, I look forward to continuing to work closely with her and to mentoring her
though this next phase of her professional growth. I am delighted that she has asked me
to serve as her Faculty Sponsor, should she be awarded a Doctoral Forgivable Loan.
This February [name of student] attended the WSCA conference in
Albuquerque, New Mexico. At the conference I met with [name of student] and several
other graduate students. I talked with [name of student] and the other students about the
convention program and various panel presentations they wished to attend, and
introduced her and her graduate school colleagues to several faculty and students at other
institutions who are teaching and writing in their areas of interest. I will continue to
facilitate these connections for [name of student] in the future. This spring I will work
closely with [name of student] through her final thesis revisions, and during the summer
I will work with her to develop a conference paper (which eventually will become a
journal article submission) based on her thesis.
As her Doctoral Forgivable Loan Sponsor I will meet with her [specify when;
include dates if possible] to talk curriculum selection, course readings, paper and
projects, juggling personal and professional commitments. I will travel to visit with her
on her doctoral institution’s campus at least once a year during her first two years. Given
the proximity of her desired doctoral program to Sacramento, these personal interactions
should be frequent and should greatly enhance [name of student] ability to succeed in
my doctoral program to maintain a vital connection to the CSU system. I will continue to
read drafts of her papers and to work with her to revise her work for presentation at
professional conferences and for submission to scholarly publications. I will talk with her
regularly by telephone and email, and reaffirm that she is welcome to call me at any time
and to come over to my office or home to talk with me about any matter on which she
believes I can advise and guide her.
In sum, if [name of student] receives a Doctoral Forgivable Loan, I will provide
ongoing support throughout her doctoral studies including face-to-face regular meetings
concerning coursework, teaching and publication and teaching, and I will continue to
meet with and mentor her at national and regional communication association
conventions. I feel confident that [name of student] will excel in her doctoral studies,
will continue to grow in her ability to conduct research and polish her already outstanding
gifted teaching, and will become a productive teacher-scholar who is eager to return to
CSU an share with future CSU students the excitement about learning that has motivated
her throughout her studies and now to take this next educational step. It has been my
pleasure to work with her during the past several years, and I will be honored to continue
to serve as her mentor and sponsor.
