A. Personal Statement

I am very dedicated to clinical research and global women’s health. As a medical student, I worked as a Doris

Duke Clinical Research Fellow in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Texas at Southwestern.

During residency, I was granted the ACOG/Bayer Health Care Award in Contraceptive Counseling, which funded two studies that assessed the intrauterine device knowledge and attitudes of U.S. medical students and obstetrics and gynecology residents. As a Family Planning Fellow, I was awarded a grant as Principal

Investigator of a large randomized controlled trial that evaluated the impact of a brief educational script on postpartum contraceptive uptake. I also completed a corollary qualitative study, a Cochrane Protocol and

Review, two secondary analyses, two reviews and a training workshop on behalf of the World Health

Organization, and coursework for a master’s degree at the UNC School of Public Health.

My interest in international women’s health research led me to my current position in Lilongwe, Malawi as an

Assistant Professor for the UNC Department of OBGYN’s Division of Global Women’s Health. Previously, I had performed research and/or clinical work in southwest China, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, and most recently, in Blantyre, Malawi. My experience in Malawi convinced me of the need to return and stay long-term to do clinical work and research to improve the lives of the women there. I am currently PI or Co-Investigator for multiple studies, ranging from the hormonal and ultrasonographic evaluation of women with obstetric fistula to the contraceptive needs of HIV+ clients and postpartum Malawian women.

Evaluation of the immunological and genital tract changes among Malawian women using the depot medroxyprogesterone injection and the levonorgestrel implant: a randomized controlled trial

Role: Principal Investigator

Description: The major goal of this project is to evaluate and compare the immunological and genital tract changes that occur in HIV-negative women when they initiate two different progestin-only contraceptives.

These findings will clarify if a potential biological basis exists for increased risk of HIV acquisition with use of these contraceptives.
