NC DPI Book Study: 99 Ideas and Activities for Teaching English Learners with The SIOP Model Educators of North Carolina: this is a unique opportunity to network by brainstorming, discussing, and problem-solving issues centered around the academic success of ELLs at your schools. English Language Learners (ELLs) face some unique challenges in schools, but there are proven strategies educators can use to help these students succeed. Learn about some of these strategies in a fun, convenient, and interactive way by participating in an online book study. WHO can participate? Administrators, content teachers of LEP students, ESL teachers, SIOP-trained teachers, and curriculum coaches in North Carolina. Enrollment is limited to 25 participants so that a community of learners can be formed. Participants will be selected to ensure state-wide participation. WHAT do I need? You will need a copy of 99 Ideas and Activities for Teaching English Learners with The SIOP Model by Mary Ellen Vogt and Jana Echevarria. This book was distributed to those who participated in the state SIOP training. Participants will have to provide their own book. The book is user-friendly and is a systematic compilation of activities that can be used by and adapted to all content area educators. The book puts theory nto practice. WHEN will it happen? The book study will last four weeks beginning October 12th and ending November 9, 2009. The book study will be an online event. You can participate in the book study at your own pace in a “classroom” that can be anywhere one chooses. We just ask that you read the assigned section, respond to the weekly prompt, and post to fellow participants at least 2 times each of the four weeks. WHY should I participate? The book study will provide teachers a chance to try out activities while being able to reflect with their colleagues and exchange ideas about implementing the strategies that work for all students including ELLs. You may earn 10 hours of credit as determined by your LEA. Upon successful completion of the online study you will receive a certificate indicating that you participated in a DPI training which focused on the components of the SIOP Model. WHERE do I go to join in? You don’t have to go anywhere. You can participate from any computer with an Internet connection. Request to participate in the book study by October 1st at http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/survey-intro.zgi?p=WEB229M8YW8UY5 Note: the request to participate will close as soon as the required number of participants has been reached. Those who are selected to participate will be notified by October 8th. This book study is sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction with support from the Appalachia Regional Comprehensive Center at Edvantia.
