Rowlands Castle, St. John’s CEC Primary School Off-Site Policy At Rowlands Castle, St. John’s School we believe that off-site activities provide children with opportunities to – Apply their knowledge, skills and understanding in realistic situations and environments. Learn through first-hand experiences and observations. Develop personal and social skills. Develop a sense of awe and wonder in a range of different environments. We aim to provide a range of off-site activities including residential visits, educational visits and after school activities. All off-site activities are to be undertaken following the Hampshire off-site activities and educational visits: Regulations and Guidance and Safety in Hazardous Pursuits: Regulations and Guidance. We will ensure that – The teacher in charge will carry out a preliminary visit and risk assessment if this trip has not taken place before (see attached form). Staff supervising the activity will be trained for that specific activity. Parents have given their written consent including contact numbers and medical questionnaire and are aware of the activities the children will undertake. Supervision ratios are adhered to as outlined in the ‘Hampshire off-site activities and educational visits: Regulations and Guidance’. All children are given the opportunity to participate in off-site activities. Hazardous Pursuits forms are completed including contact numbers and travel arrangements. Coaches and minibuses are always fitted with seatbelts and supervising staff will ensure that these are worn. Drivers of the minibus will be MIDAS trained and in addition to the driver there will be an extra adult to supervise the group. On longer journeys, both adults will be MIDAS trained – if the journey is longer than 2 hours each way. There will be at least one leader who is first-aid trained on each trip and a first aid kit will always be carried. Residential sites all have first aiders on site. Child protection procedures are adhere to. (see separate policy). Children are involved in risk assessment and will be taught to recognise hazards and take steps to control the risks to themselves and others. All staff are aware of the Hampshire County Council Emergency procedures and who their base contact for the trip is.
