UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM RECRUITMENT ROLE PROFILE FORM Job Title: Research Associate/Fellow in Mechanical Engineering and Control School/Department: Faculty of Engineering Salary: £25,513 to £29,552 per annum, depending on skills and experience (£28,695 per annum minimum with relevant PhD). Contract Status: Fixed-term contract for 15 months from 1 March 2016 Hours of Work: 36.25 per week (full-time) Location: University Park Campus Reporting to: Dr Donald Giddings, Dr Panorios Benardos, Dr David Branson III The Purpose of the New Role: This role is being created to fulfil the requirements of an industrially sponsored project. It is subject to confidentiality and a non-disclosure agreement is in place. Main Responsibilities: Main Responsibilities 1. 2. 3. % time per year Development of novel control strategies Experimental investigation at laboratory and full industrial scales including design and implementation, data collection and model validation Production of reports, and presentations and travel to meetings with industrial collaborators Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience: Essential Qualifications/ MSc or equivalent in engineering Education discipline with background in controls Skills/Training Skills in control theory and application. Proven organizational skills. Excellent communication and presentation skills. Experience Show interaction with industry. Significant demonstrated ability of team work. Creativity and leadership in problem solving. 60% 30% 10% Desirable PhD (or about to obtain) or equivalent in mechanical engineering with background in controls and/or fluid mechanics. Background in experimental investigation and analysis. Skills in experimental fluid mechanics. Knowledge of Matlab and/or LabView. Good project management skills. Experience of publication of academic journal papers and reports. Decision Making i) taken independently by the role holder; Development of control algorithms in Matlab and LabView. Decisions regarding use of equipment/facilities and the completion of experimental work. Safe operating practise within laboratories. Purchase of small consumable items for experimentation. ii) taken in collaboration with others; Requirements of industrial partner to be considered at all stages of the work. iii) referred to the appropriate line manager by the role holder. Decisions based on outcomes of experimental observations. Scope of the Role The scope of this role is towards the control methods development of the academic partner, integration with test rig, and full scale systems. The role will contribute towards the goals of the Faculty in terms of research quality, growth and esteem.
