RESPIRATORY AND EXCRETORY SYSTEM REVIEW Respiratory System – GAS EXCHANGE - Nasal cavity: contains cilia and mucus FILTER and MOISTEN air - contains blood vessels to WARM the air - Pharynx - throat - Epiglottis – prevents food or fluid from entering the trachea (prevents choking) - Trachea – windpipe - rings of cartilage - cilia and mucus - Bronchi - Bronchioles - Alveoli – where gas exchange occurs - surrounded by CAPILLARIES - oxygen diffuses into capillaries, carbon dioxide and water diffuses out of capillaries Breathing – - Inhalation diaphragm contracts (DOWN), rib cage expands - Exhalation diaphragm relaxes (UP), rib cage relaxes Excretion – removal of METABILC (cellular) WASTES from body (carbon dioxide, water, salts, urea) 6. Excretory System - Lungs – excrete carbon dioxide and water vapor - Skin – excretes metabolic wastes in perspiration (water, salt, urea) - regulates body temperature - Liver – produced UREA - Kidneys – filter metabolic wastes (water, salt, urea) from blood - regulates the concentration of water in the blood - produce URINE (water, salt, urea) 7. Urinary System – - Kidneys – produce urine - Ureters – transport urine to the bladder - Urinary bladder – stores urine - Urethra – releases urine from the bod Skin Lungs Liver Kidney Kidney Ureter Urinary bladder Urethra
