For the first time in Gaza success of the birth of the first calf, using technique of
artificial insemination
VETCO Veterinary Services Center in the Gaza Strip succeeded with the birth of the
first calf using modern techniques of artificial insemination and contracted with the
Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations "FAO" and funded by the
Canadian International Development Association, "CIDA".
The director of VETCO Center Dr. Saud Shawa said that" This is the first time since
more than twenty years using the method of artificial insemination of cattle in the
Gaza Strip, pointing out that the birth of a Friesian Holstein female calf comes as the
first case of hundreds of cows in the provinces of Gaza using the most modern
technique and bull's semin in cooperation with "SION company for artificial
insemination and breeding" .
Shawa added that "this success will pave the way for improving breeds of local cattle
and increase production of milk to achieve food security and support the dairy
breeders within the project under the supervision of FAO, adding, "at the coming
days and weeks we expect the birth of more calves and continue deliveries in
addition to provide appropriate services for cattle breeders and their cows during the
coming period. "
He continued by saying, "The success of the project contributes to the promotion of
food security, as the estimated local cows production of milk is about 20 liters of milk
a day per cow while the newborn cow will be of high production is expected to
produce in the future about 40 liters of milk a day," asserting that VETCO as an
institution of the private sector will contribute in establishing the rules for the use of
modern technologies in cattle, as well as working to educate and sensitize cattle
breeders with the latest modern world methods of raising cattle and livestock in the
Gaza Strip.
