Membership was presented by Darrell Chesnut. Memberships are still trickling in. There is no
deadline for memberships. This is an ongoing process. He is working on getting the list on the
website. Kate Parrish stated that clubs need to remind their officers that they must be
members of NAA. This is required by the bylaws.
Committee Reports:
Concessions committee report – Kate Parrish had nothing to report.
Programs committee report was presented by Katherine Brooks. She stated that
they needed to have a program committee meeting. By April, program ad packets
should be available. People were reminded that if they served on a committee, $75
would be given to the booster club of choice.
Letterman’s Gift committee report - Steve Ladner was not present. Kate reported
that she had spoken with Sherwood Taylor and there were still a lot of letter jackets
being ordered. Some rings had been ordered, but no blankets or watches had been
ordered. Sherwood is giving Kate a list of those athletes who had ordered letter
awards. The new process is going smoothly. A question was asked by a cheer
representative regarding a deadline for getting a list of those who lettered. Frank
Thompson stated that cheer and pom usually order theirs at the same time as
basketball and wrestling. This new process will be reviewed next year and changes
made, if necessary. Kate stated that Sherwood said he had a lot of jackets that
needed to be picked up. The location is at the Balfour office off Berry.
Service committee report– Diane Thompson had nothing to report. People were
reminded that if you serve on a committee or become an officer, money to your
booster club of choice is awarded for your service.
Athletic Director’s Report was given by Frank Thompson:
Frank stated that it had been brought to his attention that the company our schools had used for
the Varsity Gold Card had filed for Bankruptcy. He had not checked into the validity of this, but
he wanted to make everyone aware that this is what he had been told by another company, Great
American Opportunity, who had the same type of produce to offer. If any club is interested, see
Frank for information.
Basketball playoffs begin tomorrow. NN girls play Lawton Ike at Midwest City at 6:30. NH
girls are hosting their regional. They play Moore at 8. Girls’ winners will play on Saturday.
Boys’ regionals begin on Friday. NH plays Del City at Edmond Santa Fe at 6:30 and NN plays
Southmoore at Midwest City at 6:30. Those regionals continue on Saturday with the winners
playing at 7. Area follows the next weekend. After the first round, it is a double elimination.
Wrestling state is this weekend at the Fairgrounds in Oklahoma City. There are 2 wrestlers from
High wrestling at State, and 6 from Norman North who are wrestling at State. Good luck to those
wrestlers.
The swimmers have ended their season and had a good showing at State.
The Spring Sports are starting their seasons.
Frank reminded everyone that if an athlete makes All State on the Oklahoma Coaches
Association team, NAA purchases the All State Jacket from Midwest Trophy.
Facilities Report – District is pushing to get the Academic side settled. The drainage system for
the baseball field at North should begin in June. The dressing room renovations at Harve Collins
will begin after football season. This will take approximately one year to complete. The old
metal concession building will come down. Many renovations will be made. The Alcott PE gym
has been completed. They are looking for items to list for the next bond issue. Feel free to send
in suggestions for bond issue items.
Questions: Jamie Schmidt asked about possibility for playoff basketball games at Norman North.
Frank stated that it is possible that North and High both could possibly host for Area or State
tournaments. Jamie also said thank you for the new outlets that were put in at the North
concession stand. Frank stated that he is working on getting those, too, for Norman High. Tina
Chesnut asked about the plans for new dugouts for NHS softball. Frank said that he would check
on that. He did think it was in the plan.
Buyer’s Report – Ellen Garcia was not present
NHS Coordinator – none
NN Coordinator –none
President’s Report – Jeff Cummins stated that he would make the Bylaws review a duty of the
past president. He will begin working on this in the summer.
Jeff reminded everyone to let the coaches know that NAA pays for 2 plaques- MVP and Team
Contributor – for coaches to use at their banquets. Coaches or a booster club rep may get these
from Sooner Trophy. Senior Medals are also provided for each senior athlete.
NAA/Norman Transcript Athletes of the Month may now be called “Outstanding Athletes” since
these awards are now given as seasonal awards and not each month. The next presentation for the
winter athletes will be at the March meeting. Jeff stated that on the back of the Agenda is the list
of each reception and which sports’ athletes would be recognized at each reception. He stated
that some corrections needed to be made to that list. All sports that have separate teams of both
genders would receive awards for each gender. The corrected list is as follows:
Fall Reception – Dec. 17, 2008:
Football – 3 athletes from each high school
Fast Pitch Softball – 2 athletes from each high school
Cross Country – 2 athletes for each gender from each high school
Volleyball – 2 athletes from each high school
Winter Reception – March 25, 2009:
Wrestling – 2 athletes from each high school
Swimming – 2 athletes for each gender from each high school
Basketball – 3 athletes for each gender from each high school
Varsity Cheer – 3 athletes from each high school
Varsity Pom – 3 athletes from each high school
Spring Reception – May 27, 2009:
Golf – 2 athletes for each gender from each high school
Tennis – 2 athletes for each gender from each high school
Soccer – 2 athletes for each gender from each high school
Track – 2 athletes for each gender from each high school
Baseball – 2 athletes from each high school
Slow Pitch Softball – 2 athletes from each high school
The number of athletes is based on the length of the season. Jeff will also include this process in
the new bylaws. Frank stated that the reason we went to the seasonal presentations was because
the Transcript attends these receptions and takes pictures for the newspaper. It is too difficult for
them to be at the meetings each month.
New/Old Business:
Article XI of the Bylaws states that a nominating committee is needed for the election of NAA
officers. Chairperson of this committee will be Darrell Chesnut. Four people are needed on the
committee. Volunteers tonight were Tina Chesnut, Betsy Nelson, Angela Marquardt, and Jackie
Hill. They will meet to work on the slate of officers for next year.
Questions were asked by David Houck regarding the NAA plaques. He asked if they were
available for both boys and girls as separate awards. The answer is yes. He also asked how the
lettering process works. The coach gives the list of those who lettered to the site coordinator.
The site coordinator arranges for Sherwood Taylor to meet with the athletes so they can make
their selection of letter award. NAA pays one time for the letter award of the athlete’s choice. If
the athlete letters a second time and wants another award, he must purchase the second award
himself. The jacket that is provided is the jacket with vinyl sleeves. The athlete may choose to
trade in the jacket for one with leather sleeves at the athlete’s expense.
Lee Tabor informed everyone that Rex Cornelsen is having prostate cancer surgery on March 3rd.
He will miss 3-4 weeks from Track. He asked that everyone keep Rex in their thoughts and
prayers.
Meeting was adjourned at 7:54. The next meeting will be March 25th, beginning with the
Athletes reception at 6:30, followed by presentation of awards at 6:50. The meeting will begin
after the completion of the awards.
