Competition Preparation and Descriptions
Showmanship
Participants are judged on their ability to present and show their livestock. This competition will happen
simultaneously with the Western Canadian Judging Competition.

Western Canadian Team Judging Show Ring Preliminaries
Each team qualifying for the Western Canadian Team Judging Competition will compete by judging one class
of animals. This competition will also judge the individuals showing for showmanship.

Clipping
Animal can be washed but must not be recently clipped prior to competition. Participant must provide animal
for competition

Grooming
The grooming competition will be twenty minutes in length. Animals are to be washed and clipped prior to the
competition but dressing prior to commencement will result in disqualification. Judges will evaluate on the use
of equipment, knowledge, skill, involvement, final appearance and presentation of the heifer.

Western Canadian Team Judging Show Ring Finals
The top five teams, both Junior and Senior, compete to become the 2012 Western Canadian Show Team
Judging Champions.

Hands On Competition
The competition will be a series of “hands-on” activities reflective of skills that might be necessary to succeed
in the farming or agricultural industry. No preparation is necessary as stations will not be made public until the
beginning of the competition.

Displays are judged on things such as the neatness of the exhibit and immediate area, appearance of the
animals, attractiveness of signs and the display area and the initiative and courtesy displayed by the contestant
with dealing with the public and fellow exhibitors

Senior and Junior NYC Debate :
Preparation
In this activity, participants will engage in the chosen debate topic. For preparation, students should create a
simple sample speech on both the pro and con position. Participants will be grouped into teams but will not
know until they get there, whether they will be pro or con. Your success will rest on the research you do about
the topic ahead of time.
Procedure
Step 1: Each debate will have assign one team for pro and one team for con.
Step 2: Teams will have time to share their opinion speeches before the actual debate.
Step 3: Teams will choose someone to present supporting their position.
Step 4: Teams will have 3 minutes to prepare rebuttals and then present
Step 5: Audience will have the opportunity to ask a few questions.
Step 6: Teams will have 3 minutes to formulate an answer.
Senior Topic: Genetically modified organisms are not as safe as proponents would have the public
believe. Pro or con?
Junior Topic: Cell phones are a necessity and should be allowed in school. Pro or con?

Seniors : What’s In A Mentor
The role of a mentor is one of coach/advisor, source of encouragement/support, resource person, champion
and devil’s advocate.
To raise the profile of your own mentor (or someone you wish you had as a mentor), this competition asks you
to do the following:
1) Provide a picture of your mentor (or someone you wish was your mentor).
2) Write three statements that describe the skills, knowledge or vision your chosen mentor has.
3) Describe why you chose this person as a mentor.
The Bashaw Show Committee will evaluate your work but then would like to share your share it on social
media so please get permission from the person you chose to share your thoughts.
