"The Cashmere Spur/Bowenvale Valley reserve complex comprising 319 ha is the
most extensive area of land available for public recreation in the Christchurch
area. It is characterised by an expansive landscape, remnant native vegetation of
intrinsic heritage value and over a hundred years of European cultural influences
such as farming and tree planting. The plan includes the following reserves:

Typescript biography of a Christchurch nurse; no author given.
Includes biographical notes on the Benjamin family.
Christchurch born Kate Benjamin trained as a nurse at Christchurch Hospital from
1901-1903. The School of Nursing at Christchurch Hospital had been established
in 1891. Kate became a sister at Christchurch Hospital, and in 1911 was
appointed Matron of Cashmere Sanatorium. From 1915-1919 she served as a
nurse overseas in the Great War, then returned to the Sanatorium until 1924. She
then became Matron of Cook Hospital, Gisborne, where she remained until her
retirement in 1933. She returned to Christchurch where she died in 1938, at St.
George's Hospital.

1930. In 1932 she was admitted to Cashmere Sanatorium, suffering from

Press clippings, 1936-1941 and 1961-1966, with sketches of the coat of arms, an
heraldic eagle, cat and banner, and photocopies for use.
Deposit: Mrs. Pauline Holland (daughter of Mr. George Pope); 1996.
Mr. George Pope, a cabinet maker, worked on the Sign of the Takahe during the
Depression. He carved the coat-of-arms.
The Sign of the Takahe is one of the roadhouses for travellers designed by Harry
Ell and built on the Summit Road of the Port Hills. The Sign of the Takahe was
started in 1918 but it took more than twenty years for it to be completed. Harry Ell
used artists and craftsmen to build this beautiful rest house and tea rooms, but he
did not live to see it completed, dying in 1934.

The land for the hospital had been bought from the Cracroft Wilson estate by the
North Canterbury Hospital Board in the 1930s. Construction began in May 1952
and the hospital was opened 31 Aug. 1959 by the Governor-General, the Viscount
Cobham (1909-1977) and officially named The Princess Margaret Hospital. At one
stage it was assumed that it would become Christchurch's main hospital but it was
too far from the town centre. In 2004 the hospital cares for older persons and
people with mental illnesses.

One album inscribed: To Dr. Blackmore.
Includes extract from Up the hill : Cashmere Sanatorium and Coronation Hospital,
1910 to 1991, by T.O. Enticott.
Dr Blackmore was Medical Superintendent of the Sanatorium from 1910 to Dec.
1928. He had trained in Edinburgh, specialising in the treatment of tuberculosis,
and had been Medical Officer of Health in Bombay before coming to Christchurch.
He was an active member of St Augustine's Anglican Church, Cashmere, where a
wall plaque remembers him. After his retirement he went to England and lived in
Thame, near Oxford, until his death on 15 Apr. 1947. Gift; 1990.

The Cashmere Sanatorium, Port Hills, Christchurch [1930]

The city beautiful : official organ of the Christchurch Beautifying Association, v. 6,

This hospital, which officially opened on 3 June 1914, treated patients with
tuberculosis and was four separate institutions in one. On the lowest level was the
King George V Coronation Memorial Hospital which treated more advanced
cases. Next was the Middle Hospital which admitted only women and was in the
form of small detached huts holding only one or two patients. Next came the
Upper Sanatorium which was originally built for soldiers but later admitted
civilians. On the highest level was the Fresh Air Home for Children where children
whose parents had the disease stayed. In the 1990s Fulton Hogan Ltd bought the
site from the Canterbury Area Health Board and developed one of the largest
subdivisions ever in Christchurch

The Christchurch Consumptive Sanatorium now approaching

The Sanatorium is situated on the Cashmere Hills. The foundation stone was laid
by the Hon. W. Hall-Jones on March 20th 1907. The main block is a one-storey
brick building with tiled roof and plastered throughout. In the administration block,
off the main waiting hall, are the office, examination rooms, bacteriological rooms
and dispensary. Off the corridor are the matron's sitting room and nurses' dining
room and at the end of the next corridor is a large serving hall connecting with the
kitchen. There are two verandas connecting with the patients' wings, one for men
and the other for women. A laundry is in one of the detached buildings. The
suburb of Beckenham can be seen in the distance.

This was a place where the health of the children of patients in Coronation
Hospital could be built up. It opened on 23 Oct. 1923. It was the forerunner of the
Health Department's children's homes and open-air schools. It retained its
preventorium function until Oct. 1956. The Home kept up its social role as the
Huntsbury Children's Home until it closed in 1971

Annie Quayle Townend (1845?-1914), owner of Mona Vale, also owned a large
house on the Esplanade in Sumner. She kept a few cows and gave away milk and
butter to needy people. This annoyed one of the local borough councillors who
was also the main supplier of milk to Sumner. He felt she was taking business
away from him and so arranged for the Townend dairy to be condemned as
substandard. The irate Mrs Townend decided to leave Sumner in 1911, taking her
house with her. The removal contract was given to W.H. Williamson, founder of
W. Williamson Construction Co. Ltd., who used two traction engines to draw the
house along Ferry Road, across to the hills and up Dyers Pass Road to Macmillan
Avenue where it was sited in two separate sections across the road from one
another. Mrs Townend lived at Glenholme with a companion, Lady Campbell, a
housekeeper, Mrs Tabart, and other staff until her death in 1914

The Cashmere Hills extension was the only hill tramway in Christchurch. It opened
on 1 May 1912 and continued up to the Tram Terminus Resthouse which became
the Sign of the Takahe in 1949. "Yank" tramcars were used on this route.

Archive 267: The North Canterbury Hospital Board / Winifred Ruth Norris, p. 161
This was opened on King George V's (1865-1936) birthday, 3 June 1914, by the
Minister of Health, the Hon. Sir Robert Heaton Rhodes (1815-1884). It was
primarily established for advanced cases of tuberculosis, most cases being placed
there for observation. It was extended at both ends in 1917 and 1921 and a third
floor was added in 1930. It was cleared of tubercular patients in 1959 and
converted for long-stay geriatric patients. It closed on 16 Dec. 1991

room at St. Andrew's College. It was for the children who were at the Fresh Air
Home and was designed to take thirty pupils. After Oct. 1956 it continued as the
school for the Huntsbury Children's Home until that closed in 1971

This was built in stages and took over thirty years to complete. Harry Ell had
earmarked the site as early as 1904 but building did not commence until 1918.
The completed lower floor was opened in 1920 as the Tram Terminus Resthouse.
The building, taken over by the Christchurch City Council in 1942, was finally
completed and officially opened on 1 Apr. 1949

Sumner to Cashmere in 1911, a narrow wing was cut off and placed across the
road from the main part of the house. The coachman lived there with stables
nearby. The two houses were connected by a private underground telephone line.
Other lines ran to more staff houses further up Macmillan Avenue.

The Management Plan area constitutes the largest and most accessible tract of
public land in the Port Hills, and provides a diverse and attractive environment for
active recreation. The rugged and sometimes dramatic topography creates
opportunities for exploration and movement which are unavailable on level

uncrowded open space combine to form a major recreational resource of a size
and quality seldom found within city boundaries.

CREAS is a GIS-based strategic management tool for Christchurch waterways
developed by ecological consultants, NIWA, and EOS Ecology. The purpose of
CREAS is to provide natural asset management data of Christchurch’s
waterways.
CREAS is a river survey system which will occur in several stages. The first stage
includes surveys of physical habitat only carried out over three seasons. No data
has been entered yet on fish and macro-invertebrates, although this will be
undertaken in the near future.

Farnley Reserve Plaques

The Port Hills Reserves, Future Management Requirements

The following is a report on future management requirements covering the Port
Hills reserves administered by the Christchurch City Council. These reserves
together with brief legal details are listed in Appendix 1 with maps of most of the
reserves included as Appendix 1A.
The report is one of the special projects identified to be undertaken for the Parks
Unit in 1992/93. The main aim of the report has been to address the practical and
more basic issues of management and to provide a management guide for field
staff. At the same time some attention has been given to longer term goals and
policies that could be appropriate for the reserves and wider issues of the Port
Hills impacting on the reserves.

This view from the Summit Road above Christchurch looks west across the
Canterbury Plains to the Southern Alps. By using an elevated viewpoint, Doris
Lusk has emphasised the structure of the rounded hills broken up by small gullies,
and captured the broad expanse of the Canterbury Plains. She has simplified the
landscape to its basic elements, placing an emphasis on the underlying structure
of the valley rather than on what occupies the land. In this approach Lusk was
influenced by the paintings of her contemporary, Colin McCahon (1919 -1987),
who stayed with her and her family in 1948. ….
