OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS IN PROFESSIONAL AND SCHOLARLY
PUBLISHING
Continuing a 28-Year Tradition of Honoring Excellence in Professional and Scholarly
Publishing
Washington, DC, Tuesday, February 10, 2004 – The Professional and Scholarly
Publishing Division (PSP) of the Association of American Publishers (AAP) today announced that Developmental Plasticity and Evolution by Mary Jane West-Eberhard, published by Oxford University Press, has been chosen to receive the R.R. Hawkins
Award for the Outstanding Professional, Reference or Scholarly Work of 2003.
The award will be presented on Tuesday, February 10 at a special awards luncheon during the PSP Annual Conference in Washington, DC. In addition to the Hawkins
Award, which is named for the former head of the Science and Technology Division of the New York Public Library, awards will be presented in 30 categories for outstanding books, journals, and electronic products covering a wide range of academic disciplines.
Noting that “promoting and encouraging the dissemination of scholarship is one of
AAP’s primary missions,” AAP President and CEO Pat Schroeder extended the
Association’s congratulations to Mary Jane West-Eberhard, the Oxford University Press, and all of the award recipients. “Being recognized for excellence is always an honor,”
Mrs. Schroeder said, “but when that recognition comes from your peers the honor is truly significant. The award winners in each category were selected for their unique contribution to scholarly publishing and are considered by our panel of judges to be the best of the best for 2003.” The award winners were chosen by a nine-member expert panel consisting of librarians, academics, and working publishers who are themselves former academics.

2003 R.R. Hawkins Award Winner
Developmental Plasticity and Evolution , by Mary Jane West-Eberhard, assesses all the evidence for our current understanding of the role of changes in body plan and development for the process of speciation. The process of evolution is systematically reassessed to integrate the insights coming from developmental genetics of how evolution works to produce such phenomena as adaptation and speciation. This work addresses many issues omitted in previous attempts at synthesis of development and evolution, for the first time presenting a definitive and broad analysis of both concepts and relevant data.
