NEW ANTIQUES SHOP TO OFFICIALLY
OPEN IN BRIGHTON’S ANTIQUES
QUARTER ON MAY 30
-FAMILIAR FACE MARK STACEY TO OPEN
‘RETRO’ SHOP ON ST JAMES’S STREET-
YOU MIGHT have already spotted it, but the distinctive ‘Wedgwood’ blue shop at
72 St James’s Street in Brighton will be officially opened on Monday, May 30, 2011
at 4pm by TV personality Tim Wonnacott.
‘Vintiques’, in the heart of Kemptown’s Antiques Quarter is the brainchild of local
resident and antiques expert Mark Stacey, who also appears on many of the BBC’s
popular Antiques programmes. The shop will sell a vast selection of objects ranging
from the 19th century to the present day including small pieces of furniture,
ceramics, silver, glass, mirrors and paintings – with a strong emphasis on the retro.
Prices will start at around £20.
The shop will be open every day except Tuesday from 11am – 5pm, however
objects can also be bought via the shops’s website www.vintiques.co.uk or by
calling 01273 690274.
Mark has been in the Antiques Trade for more than 20 years, firstly as a dealer and
then working for world-famous auctioneers Sotheby’s and Bonhams.
As he explained: “I first lived in Brighton 15 years ago and although I moved away, I
was always coming back. Three and a half years ago, I had the chance to move
back to live here. During my time at Sotheby’s, my eyes were opened to the wider
market and the objects I was able to handle were wonderful – it was a magnificent
learning curve! So therefore, when I was offered the opportunity to buy the shop in
Kemptown – an area which I love because of it’s Bohemian feel - I jumped at the
chance!”
He continued: “When you visit the shop, you will see that the building is full of
character and really quirky, which I instantly adored. It needed work, which we have
just finished and it will look amazing with the mix of traditional antiques contrasted
with Art Deco, vintage and retro pieces. I am delighted how the shop is looking and
just last week, I picked up a wonderful Belgian chandelier from the Brussels Expo in
1958. I am hoping to hold a yearly selling exhibition in the shop, and this year I am
planning to focus on the work of Lalique – so watch this space!”

Tim Wonnacott was born and brought up in North Devon. He attended auctions from a very tender
age, watching his father conduct sales for the family firm during the school holidays. His first
experience of auctioneering (selling the contents of a kitchen at the end of a farm sale) when aged
around 16 or so, led him to pursue a career as a professional in the auction and property business.
Qualifying as a Chartered Auctioneer and Chartered Surveyor enabled him to gather considerable
experience in the provinces, but in order to further his interest in the field of Fine Art auctioneering; he
was inevitably drawn to London. Following a post-graduate course at the V & A’s study centre for the
Fine and Decorative Arts, he joined Sotheby’s in London in 1978, becoming a junior Director in 1983
and full Director in 1985. Tim is married with three children and lived for 15 years in Cheshire, running
Sotheby’s operations in the North West. In September 1998, he was appointed Chairman of Sotheby’s
South saleroom in Sussex and in 2001, became Chairman of Sotheby’s new saleroom at Olympia in
London, dual roles which he held until January 2003.
Tim first started appearing regularly on television in the early 1990s on BBC Antiques Roadshow. He
went onto appear on The Great Antiques Hunt; the Antiques Show; Going Going Gone and The
Antiques Inspectors, but it is the popular morning programme Bargain Hunt, that is he most well known
for and has now been the main presenter since 2003 and has filmed more than 750 programmes and it
is the highest-rated daytime programme on any channel (except the news). He also presents Antiques
Roadtrip and could recently be seen on Royal Upstairs Downstairs.
