AUDITION REQUIREMENTS, 2009-2010 SEASON
This audition is for acceptance into the South Bend Youth Symphony Orchestras program. The judges will
place each student in the orchestra best suited to their current level and educational needs.
STRINGS – please prepare the following Scales and Solo Work

Please prepare the following scales. The judges will chose 2-3 for you to play in your audition.

If you wish to be considered for the Symphony Orchestra, please prepare the higher number
of octaves requested for all Major and Melodic Minor Scales.
VIOLIN

Please prepare a solo/etude of your choice that best demonstrates your ability. This solo (or excerpt of a
solo/etude) should be approximately two minutes in length. No accompaniment.
HARP - please prepare the following Solo Work and Orchestral Excerpt(s)
Solo Work:
A solo or concerto movement of your choice that best demonstrates your ability. This
solo/concerto movement (or excerpt) should be approximately three-five minutes in length.
No accompaniment.
Orchestral Excerpts:
For Concert Orchestra:
Sanctus (Letter C to the end) from Requiem by Faure
or another of comparable level
For Symphony Orchestra:
“Waltz of the Flowers” from the Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky
Fantasia from Greensleeves by Vaughan-Williams
or 1 cadenza and 1 excerpt of comparable level
** Please bring two copies of your solo to the audition, along with any supplies you may
need (cellists and bassists remember to bring a rock stop!)

Identify all instruments you play and prepare to play a short solo or excerpt on each instrument for
which you wish to audition. Bring your own mallets/sticks/etc. to the audition.
