Married, father of two medical doctors and an economist. He received elementary and higher education at the Experimental School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, graduation in 1967 with honors. The same year he received also the first National Prize from the Greek Mathematical Society. Graduation with honors from the Medical School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1973. Foreign Languages: English, French and German. He received his neurosurgical training at the Medical School of the University of Thessaloniki, the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Canada, and Emory University, Atlanta, USA. He served as Chief Resident both at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon and Emory University in Atlanta. He is qualified to practice neurosurgery in Greece (1980) and the USA, certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery (1987). He has passed the ECFMG, VQE and FLEX examinations. He is member of AANS, CNS, and EANS (American and European Neurosurgical Societies) and 13 greek scientific societies. He received his Ph.D at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. His thesis was on the narrow lumbar spinal canal and passed with honors in 1992. He has held the following positions: 1984 - 1999: In 1984 he organized and started the function of the Department of Neurosurgery of the George Papanikolaou State Hospital of Thessaloniki, which was only the second neurosurgical department of Northern Greece at that time (nowadays, there are seven). Several neurosurgical procedures, which are now in routine use, were performed for the first time in Northern Greece in that Department. 1999 - 2006: Associate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery of the University of Ioannina. In 2005 he became Professor of Neurosurgery at the same University. 2006 - today: Professor of Neurosurgery at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 1st Department of Neurosurgery, AHEPA Hospital. November 2008 – today: Chairman of the same Department He was Visiting Professor of the “Neurochirurgische Klinik der Universitaet Erlangen-Nurberg” Germany. He has invited a several foreign professors to give scientific lectures in Greece, among them Professor of Harvard University Peter Black, who was honored by the A.U.Th. As the delegate of Greece at the Training Committee of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS) for four years, he has participated as a trainer in the weekly biannual training courses of the EANS involving more than 200 trainees in Neurosurgery from all European countries. He has given lectures and run discussion groups, covering all the main scientific topics of the courses. He has also served as representative of Greece in the World Federation of Neurosurgical Society (WFNS) for two years. He has organized a two-day symposium on Neuroncology in Ioannina 2001, the 16th Panhellenic Congress, in Ioannina 2002, and the summer 2005 EANS Course in Thessaloniki, which was described by many participants as ‘the best ever’. His research interests include the following: He was cerebrovascular Research Fellow at the Emory University for one year (1982-1983), director of the Neurosurgical Research Institute of the University of Ioannina from 2000 to 2009, focused on the Molecular biology of brain tumors, and has been the principal investigator of seven research projects, in the University of Thessaloniki which are supported by corresponding research grants. These projects are dealing with the brain tumors, the magnetic properties of the spine and the process of medical education. Total account of financial support: > 300.000€. Author of 61 international (Pub-Med) and 18 greek publications with more than 500 international citations. Has also authored 8 chapters in international books and 7 greek chapters and 7 review papers in international peer-reviewed journals. He has puphished 32 abstracts in proceeding of congresses and one review of book on Neurosurgery. His managerial experience includes the following: Director of the Department of Neurosciences (Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry) of the Medical School of the University of Thessaloniki from 2010 – 2012 and member of the Administrative Council of the School. Member of the Administrative Council of Papageorgiou General Hospital the last 3 years Director of the Department of Surgery, AHEPA University Hospital (January 2012) Internal (elected) Member of the Board of Trustees (Council) of A.U.TH. (February 2013) and chairs the Committee on the “constitution” of the University. In 2012 he received the highest military distinction of the Bulgarian Ministry of Defense for the successful surgical management of a cerebral aneurysm in a Bulgarian sergeant of NATO force in Kosovo
