CHIEF RESIDENT JOB DESCRIPTION A) Chief Resident(s) will be nominated by the residents and selected by the Emergency Medicine Education Committee. Chief Resident(s) selection shall be made in the spring for the academic year beginning July 1st and ending June 30th. The Chief Resident(s)-Elect will participate in a three-month training period (April-June), under the direction of the Director of Emergency Medicine Education, Residency Coordinator, and current Chief Resident(s), prior to officially taking office on July 1st. B) Chief Resident(s)’s primary responsibility is to ensure that the resident component of the clinical operation of the Emergency Department and the educational activities of the residency are optimized and effective on a daily basis. C) Chief Resident(s) is responsible to and will meet regularly with the Director of Emergency Medicine Education. D) Chief Resident(s) will serve Emergency Department committees including but not limited to: (1) Emergency Medicine Education Committee (2) Research and Evidence Based Medicine Committee (3) Resident/Intern Selection Committee E) Chief Resident(s) will attend the OUCOM/Doctors Hospital Chief Resident meetings, held monthly. F) Chief Resident(s) will assist the Director of Emergency Medicine Education, core faculty, and Residency Coordinator in curriculum development and evaluation for residents and interns. G) Chief Resident(s) will assist the Director of Emergency Medicine Education in designing and implementing educational programs for the Emergency Department. H) Chief Resident(s) will coordinate weekly book club and monthly case conferences and assign case presentations as needed. I) Chief Resident(s) will select a clinical area of interest in Emergency Medicine and will present a mini lecture series on the topic to the OUCOM/Doctors Hospital Emergency Medicine Residency Program. The topic must be pre-approved by the Director of Emergency Medicine Education. J) Chief Resident(s) will orient the students/interns prior to their month in the Emergency Department 1 K) Chief Resident(s) will coordinate other didactic presentations outside the defined Emergency Medicine curriculum, intended to enrich the educational experience of housestaff. L) Chief Resident(s) will act as a liaison between other housestaff and the Division of Emergency Medicine. M) Chief Resident(s) will alert the Director of Emergency Medicine Education to any potential issues regarding housestaff or faculty performance and will assist the Director of Emergency Medicine Education (or his/her designee) in individual counseling sessions as necessary. N) Chief Resident(s) will assist in the recruitment and selection of Emergency Medicine residents and emphasis track interns. O) Chief Resident(s) will prepare and distribute the monthly clinical schedule for residents, interns, and students assigned to the Emergency Medicine service. P) Chief Resident(s) will have an on-call or back up resident schedule such that in the event a resident is unable to work his/her Emergency Medicine shift, the shift will be covered. Q) Chief Resident(s) will work 2-3 fewer shifts per month than his/her colleagues. R) Chief Resident(s) will encourage and demonstrate the desire to teach. S) Chief Resident(s) will facilitate team spirit and cohesiveness. T) Chief Resident(s) will hold resident meetings as needed when issues/concerns arise. U) Upon selection by the Emergency Medicine Education Committee, the Chief Resident(s) will participate in the training of his/her successor. V) Chief Resident(s) will attend the Chief Resident Forum sponsored by the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors. W) Chief Resident(s) will assist the Director of Emergency Medicine Education with the annual orientation of Emergency Medicine residents and Emergency Medicine emphasis track interns. X) Chief Resident(s) will assist the Vice President of Medical Education with the annual orientation of housestaff new to the Doctors Hospital system. Y) Chief Resident(s) will assist with preparation for and will participate in inspections for the purpose of Emergency Medicine Residency, Emergency Department, or OUCOM/Doctors Hospital accreditation. Z) Chief Resident(s) will seek to enhance his/her credentials through additional training, committee work continuing medical education, self-study, and participation in professional development seminars. 2 AA) Chief Resident(s) will be responsible for other duties as assigned by the Director of Emergency Medicine Education (or his/her designee). 3
