Run-On Sentences & Fragments
Run-On Sentences:
A run-on can occur when two or more complete thoughts are joined together without
correct punctuation or just throwing in a weak comma.
Run-On example: Hiking up a mountain is hard work it is a great accomplishment.
Run-On example: Hiking up a mountain is hard work, it is a great accomplishment.
This problem can be fixed by:
 Separating the complete thoughts into two separate sentences:
example: Hiking up a mountain is hard work. It is a great accomplishment.
 Using a comma and one of the FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)
example: Hiking up a mountain is hard work, and it is a great accomplishment.
Fragments:
A sentence fragment is a part of a sentence that is missing a subject or a verb or is not
a complete thought.
 Missing a subject
Fragment example: Was a disaster.
It is a fact that…
Fix it by adding a subject: The trip was a disaster.
 Missing a verb
Fragment example: The singers practicing for hours.
Fix it by adding a verb: The singers were practicing for hours.
 Not a complete thought
Fragment example: When the bell rang.
Fix it by completing the thought: We ran to the bus when the bell rang.
